The "drone" live does not sound at all like the recorded version. So much so that I don't even consider it the drone.

Actually, my "it's okay" argument is sort of hypocritical, since I'm basically doing the same thing as you from the opposite direction. Hell, maybe Modern Times is a masterpiece, but I don't hear it. I like it though.
