I just want to point out that that was panther's 666th post. Also, dude, what's up with everybody calling one another dude like it was Miley Cyrus day or something, dude? -
I can't seem to play anything else tonight. O Dana as I type. What a sad, premature loss this is.

Aw, crap. RIP and thanks for all the incredible music, Alex. A true one-of-a-kind.

I salute your grandpop's sacrifice! Seriously, I do.

That show is painful to watch.

My dad was one of the paratroopers who jumped on Corregidor to retake it from the Japanese...he tells of the Japanese firing up at the troopers as they drifted down, some dead from Japanese fire before they even reached ground. Dad has some really fascinating, but often horrific, tales to tell from his time in the Pacific Theatre. The paratroopers he jumped with were going on poor military info, and found far more Japanese on the island than they had expected. The Americans ultimately prevailed, but not easily. Cheers to the courage of those men!

Yeah, it's criminal what textbooks cost! That book looks intriguing. I have to rave again about City of Thieves. How tragic, comic, and triumphant this book is...and in the end, how sweetly heartening. There is so much depth here. This story is a gem! This is one of those books that will stick in my head for life. to author David Benioff!

Spineless and bizarre! -
Thanks for this, OCB. The mp3 at the end brought me to tears.

Sometimes all the sadness in the world feels like a tsunami. God bless poor Mark, and anyone in that sort of hopeless pain. Let's all try to treat each other as well as we can.

"well-cured", haha, I like that. But in the interests of both full disclosure as well as not confusing the newbies, I should mention that I, kidsmoke, need never worry about my balls falling out of the bottom of my pants, no matter how stellar the music. Kidsmoke is female. Kidsmoke's faves include Handshake Drugs live, Kung Pao chicken, the number 3, and talking in the 3rd person. The Drive-By Truckers are cool too.

So very, very sad. RIP, Mark.

Straight Man - Richard Russo Based On the Movie - Billy Taylor City of Thieves - David Benioff The first two are wonderful, fast-moving & funny, and if you like Robbins I expect you'll like these a lot. City of Thieves is quite funny too, but also poignant and tragic and just plain brilliant. You can't go wrong with any of these. Oh, one more... Dear American Airlines - Jonathan Miles A guy sitting in a terminal writing a complaint letter. I'll leave it at that.

I'm 54, and can still be completely bowled off my feet by some albums. So I guess I'm proof that that doesn't necessarily ever go away.

Hi all, "poortranslator" is a member here at VC who used to go by that username, but has (quite awhile ago) changed to another username. I'm almost certain he is still a member here but I can't remember what his new username is. I feel sure somebody here can help, so if you know the VC member I'm referring to, please help out! A box of pudding to the first person to identify him! He's not in trouble, honest.

GUIDELINES FOR TRIBUTE PARTICIPATION First, we admins have discussed which songs would be appropriate for inclusion, and have decided that a WILCO tribute should consist of WILCO songs. Other songs, from various other groups & performances Jeff Tweedy has been associated with, will be used in the creation of a separate "Tweedy Tribute" in the future. As with our previous two Tributes, we will be sharing the magic of your musical creations with the members of Via Chicago. All the members of Wilco will receive copies as well, handsomely outfitted with cover art and liner notes. It will be

How to Submit Your Songs: You will be sending your submissions to Donna (kidsmoke) and the mastering process will be done, as in the past, by Masterful Mart (Twisted Acres), who will of course create a superior finished product. Here are the submission guidelines: From Donna: Ideally, the format I'd like to receive from you would be an AIFF, WAV, or FLAC file on audio cd or cd-rom or uploaded to: http://www.thevctributes.com/?p=upload. A super-high resolution MP3 (256 kbps or greater) would also be acceptable provided it is first generation (not a copy). If all you have is a cassette tape,

That's touching.

Good to hear that! My son Tom got that for me for my January birthday, and it's waiting in my reading stack. Looking forward to it!
-
It's really heartbreaking. I had so hoped it would turn out differently.

Damned brilliant. I'm going to have to reread the real "Sense and Sensibility" to remember the real plot. I don't think there was an undersea sub-station in that, was there? The "Readers Group Guide" at the end was hilarious.
