  1. Matt Cameron was the only drummer in the whole show who pulled it off.
  2. Yeah, there are a lot of save situations that have a lot more pressure than the 3 run lead, 1 inning situation. The problem is, a major league manager will bring his "closer" in for a save situation 99% of the time (unless he's worked like 3 days in a row or something). He will also bring in his "closer" when down by 1 run in the 8th almost never, which is really when you need the guy who is supposedly the best guy in your bullpen. Managers manage their bullpen based on "save situations" rather than when they really need to be using their best guy. No, the closer isn't always brought in wi
  3. I'll be there. Most excited for: Dinosaur Jr Mission of Burma Les Savy Fav Fleet Foxes Public Enemy The Dodos Ghostface & Raekwan
  4. I don't think I've ever heard anyone say that Trevor Hoffman is/was the best closer in the game, which I guess shows that most people deep down know how silly the save stat is. But yeah, if he had played in NY or Boston I probably would have heard him called that.
  5. A-B pretty much ended distribution of Bell's in Chicago and for that I will never forgive them.
  6. They should try using someone else there then. 90% of relievers could be effective as closers, in the way that closers are used nowadays. I always laugh when a team trades a hot prospect or something for a relief pitcher who might get them one more win than if they'd just given their setup man a shot at it.
  7. I'm sure there are a few closers who could be adaquate starters, but not dominant. In general, if a guy is good enough, you want to give him as many innings as you can, so you don't put him in the bullpen. Rivera is notable mostly for his longetivity -- he completely washed out as a starter earlier in his career. A lot of guys make that transition from starting to relieving effectively, even to the closer role, but most of them don't stay dominant in that role for very long, as Mo has.
  8. A closer can be very valuable to a team, but most teams squander their value by using them exclusively in save situations rather than when they're most in need of a good pitcher. As bobbob said, pretty much any big league pitcher can get 3 outs before giving up 2-3 runs on a pretty consistent basis.
  9. Yeah, the GOP isn't all bad. After all,
  10. The argument there would be that if the hitters had put up more runs, then it wouldn't matter if the closer gives up one. The only situation I can think of where you can really say one guy lost it himself is perhaps a pitcher giving up 8 runs in 1/3 of an innings before getting yanked, and then his team losing 8-7 or something.
  11. I didn't even say anything about the quote.
  12. I second that. Vonnegut is a real hero of mine.
  13. I know it's just the All Star Game and that it's meaningless blah blah blah, but that was a heck of a game.
  14. I've never been to Albany Park and had no idea what it had to offer. One of the great things about this city -- I've only been here a few years but I think I will discover new neighborhoods with great restaurants and shops pretty much forever. By the way, Lou, are you going to P4K? Haven't seen you in a long time.
  15. Chris Berman just said that Morneau was being "goalie-like" in how he is defensively watching Hamilton hit. I want to shoot Chris Berman.
  16. I think it's pretty tasteless. I also don't care all that much.
  17. Assuming liberalism is a luxery (which is absurd on its face, but hypothetically...) does that mean that it is inherently wrong?
  18. The first couple innings of big name after big name batting is sort of fun, but it's usually sort of boring by the 6th inning.
  19. Chris Berman only became tolerable once he stopped doing "back back back back back" for every single one. I voted Hamilton.
  20. He's great! Thanks for asking. He's been spending his Sunday alternately sleeping and practicing some commands from his first obedience class that he went to on Friday!
  21. Badly needed win for the Tigers today. After all of the early season struggles, it's pretty nice to go into the All-Star break at .500. Awesome performances today from Verlander, Joyce, and Thomas.
  22. To be in first place on their own, they'd have to win and the Rays would have to lose. With just a Sox win or just a Rays loss, they'd be tied, with the Rays getting the tiebreaker since they currently lead the head-to-head season series 7-6.
  23. If you go to MLB.tv, at the bottom of the black part of the page you can type in his zip code and it will tell you for sure which markets he's in.
