  1. I always loved that tune with Jerry's midi trumpet. That and Foolish Heart were the best tunes on the last album.
  2. It is good to remember it's not the dead, but really could've been something focused and good in the same spirit.
  3. That is true. I didn't expect 'shows for the ages' but at least something compelling. At least the guys have been out there playing.
  4. Thanks for the American Music Club recs. I was not aware that they started in the 80s. I haven't seen the doc. You basically have to buy it to watch it. I'd enjoy seeing his commentary of touring. Probably some funny stuff. Definitely would love to some recording/artistic process footage. Definitely now since it's all so stream of thought. One thing I'll never get about him is that he can make these pristine, beautiful albums but then be so hit and miss/lazy in the live setting. He really should be a curated act playing theaters with a full band and a more professional demeanor.
  5. Rollercoaster is the best of the 3 as far as I'm concerned. Down Colorful Hill is very rough in the sense that Koz was learning his craft and finding his sound. I think Blue Guitar, Ocean Beach and Old Ramon are incredible and definitely some of the best albums of the 90s. I never got into American Music Club. Need to check them out. I just never like their promo pics, so I never listened…so stupid of me! BTW, have you ever seen that On Tour documentary about Kozelek?
  6. @Shug, I'm with you all the way. I think I like the first incarnation of the Other Ones best because the boys were only 3 years out from the final Dead tour. They played the songs at the regular tempo, in the most current arrangements and I think Hornsby was more in the directors seat. I get that Bob plays stuff slower in Ratdog. That's what he set out to do…be a kind of all improv blues band. Not my cup of tea. My issue has always been that the changes in tempo and arrangements, for the most part, have had disastrous consequences for the music. It's just plain boring a best and emb
  7. I really love the first Desertshore album. It's like an all instrumental RHP album. The Album Leaf collaboration is excellent. I was hesitant, but it really works. I don't think any of Lavelle's other work matches it except the tune Micro Melodies on the Moog soundtrack. I'll tell you one thing, I'm really not that fond of the first three RHP records (1,2, colorful). There are some moments. I just don't care for that reverb, shoe gaze production. Not to mention Koz was still honing his style. May need to revisit those. Love Mistress, of course.
  8. Yes, as I hit my 40s and realized how much time had passed from my idealist 20s, his songs just nailed me. We're mortals! Fuck! Case in point, I can't believe the dude is almost 50! The other stuff I need to get is his work with Desertshore. Guitar player from RHP is in that band.
  9. Sorry if there was a better thread to revive than this. Anyway, I can't keep up with Koz over the last few years. He's been putting out music left and right…aside from his other antics. Looks like he's putting out an album with Jesu in February. Track in link below. He also has a new EP on the way as well as a spoken word album. I'm really relating to his new stream of consciousness lyrical form. He's made some good points about getting older and losing metaphors for shit that happens in life. I still need to get that disc he did with Album Leaf! http://www.sunkilmoon.com/kozelekd
  10. that is cool. i love getting these little bits of knowledge from time to time. just add it to the archive in my brain. for some reason, i can read/hear anything music related (especially GD) and never forget it. wish i was that way about many more things!
  11. 72-73 is so interesting to me. The band was phasing out the cryptical/Stephen/eleven 600s psychedelic extavaganzas and playing a bunch of 'songs'. Then they would do a 'jam' set with other one, DS etc. comparivily, '74 is just out there.
  12. I still think it would be great if full size gatefolds were sold with CDs or download card. And, of course, dynamically mastered tracks. I also think outages and such would be much more appropriate in some sort of public archive...at least for streaming and research. I'd love to hear all these outtakes, but I don't need to own them.
  13. If I did go vinyl, I would only buy older stuff. Even that stuff is not so cheap. I'm not a fan of 3 side vinyl for an album that was obviously formatted for the CD. I've wasted a lot of time dicking around with the various formats over the last few years. I've come to the point that if I really like the song/album, the format becomes moot. I get lost in the song. Now, having a pic and some liner notes definitely helps when getting into a new album.
  14. I can see them putting out another, dare I say, more serious album with a proper, short tour in the spring and summer. An album with classic build up, bonus tracks etc. I also think Tweedy will to a run next summer if Spence goes to college. I bet there's another Tweedy album on the horizon since there is an actual band now and the initial track list came from 100 new tunes. Theres always a chance for a live album/DVD from Tweedy or Wilco. As for others…new Autumn Defense. They've been pretty regular with albums and tours. Oh, and Jeff might do some more producing. Would love to see
  15. @Fritz Thanks for the recommendation. Incidentally, I've been getting some boots over at this site called Tangled Up In Torrents. I'm sure some of you have heard. Been listening to stuff from the last 10 years. His band is so damn good!! http://tangledupintorrents.com/index.php
  16. Thanks! I'll definitely check that out. Will probably re-read Chronicles too. That book reads like one long Dylan song.
  17. Thanks, I knew something was released. I had it in my head that a whole show was released with NRPS set and the full Dead set. Have to check those out. BTW, this is some footage of Dead & Co. I think it sounds great. Drummers seem a bit tired, but Mayer fits in well. He's what I think the band has needed all along…a guitarist who doesn't play exactly like Jerry, but whose personal sound fits in with the Dead. I think I'll head down the venue here in Atlanta when they come and try to get a cheap ticket. Although, I heard some rumbling that some of the shows have sold out…? http:/
  18. I know this has been asked so many times here...but...what's a good Dylan book to read after Chronicles? Also, I've been doing a little reading and find it interesting that Dylan had many of the songs written that would end up on Freewheelin' at the time of recording his first album. What's even more interesting is the fact that he choose to record mainly covers for the first album while having all these other tunes in his back pocket. I may have my history mixed up though. I wonder if Dylan or the record company choose to do mostly covers in order to sell to the folk crowd.
  19. Was there ever an official release with both the dead and new riders? I seem to remember there was one. Incidentally, that first naps record is killer!
  20. Yeah, like tapes and vinyl CDs will rise again! I'm with you all the way. I got out my old disc man and have really listening to the Tweedy album. So great to pay attention and all the nuances. BTW, is the complete basement tapes set worth getting. I plan on getting the 2 disc version. I just don't want to miss out.
  21. For a newbie I'd play these songs... Box Full Of Letters Misunderstood Shot In The Arm I Am Trying To Break Your Heart.
