  1. Quit driving! Right on. Also, quit eating crap and exercise, as one of the highest causes of death is heart disease. Almost totally avoidable by diet Alas, our society makes that almost impossible.
  2. 'Evolutionary' and 'genetic' are floating signifiers for ideology. Much like 'common sense'. Not that this urge isn't 'real' and 'causal'. With this in mind, I think it through and decide not to own a gun because the probability of me actually having to or getting to use it is 0%. The probability that my child, me, family member, other gets hurt/dies in an accident or invasion is higher and more significant. The other aspect of this is that the gun debate must look at the root causes of violence. People don't grow up wanting to kill other people, unless they are sociopaths or socialized
  3. So that makes the probability even lower. Point being, you will never be invaded by an armed intruder, much less in circumstances that you are in a position to actually do something. However, the risk of a shooting/death are much greater if you have a gun in the house, etc. Again, I'll bet the shooter in the article knew the intruders and was waiting to kill.
  4. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yHWQN_G9SsQ Art Gods: Tower Records Art Dept. We had a giant Tower here in Atlanta. So great and so overwhelming. They had everything. I really miss it. Luckily, we still have several indie stores here.
  5. Common sense is the problem. Anyone you deem entering illegally should be shot!? For the hell of it I did some stats. Using conservative estimates of the number of home invasions reported and the US population, chances of being shot in a home invasion is .023%. This is just from the raw data. The numbers get a lot more interesting when other variables are considered. No one needs a gun. The risks far out weigh the actual advantage.
  6. https://www.facebook.com/TowerRecordsProject/?fref=photo A very cool site that has tons of pics of Tower Records over the years. I love the inside pics and looking at the new releases in the 70s! Damn, what time. I really, really miss that. Record store Friday night or Sat. Come home, listen. There are also two recent documentaries about Tower Records. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt3272570/
  7. At least manslaughter. And making killing some sort of justified act whether it's called murder or not is ridiculous. And, as I've said again and again, we do not know any real details of this case. Having knife or gun in the vicinity an attempted murder does not make. This girl was not running toward him with a knife or gun. There are so many nuances to these cases that can be discerned if one is available. I am, your not. I hope some day real dialogue can take place about these issue with a focus on the real systemic issues behind gun violence. Internet forums are obviously not the p
  8. That's a fairly sick and dangerous position to say this girl deserved to be murdered. What a sad way to see human life. Should all criminals and potential criminals be murdered? Who decides? You obviously can't think past your belief in this being a black/white issue. You are not privy to any extra info about this case and can't even consider the details given by me or the article. For example, I made it quite clear I was talking about the world population, not just the U.S. And , it still stands that the 'innocent' gun owner killed a person, not the alleged criminals. And, of course I'
  9. I too get cynical about it. Things could change though...theoretically. Maybe we could apply Hegal's dialectic and ask completely different questions. We're obviously not asking the right ones much less even able to be aware of them. Happy Holiday. Hope y'all don't get invaded this weekend. Or, the more likely scenario, we'll celebrate gluttony while most of the world's population drink dirty water.
  10. I never said 'never' with concern to armed robberies or schooled gun owners. The risk seems to out weigh the need for guns. Really check out some peer reviewed articles rather than believe that opinion piece. My other point was that most of us are suffering daily in this world for various reasons. But we choose to focus on these ancillary issues. Much the same that is going on right now with the Paris tragedy. Yes, it's horrible, but the majority of humanity is living in poverty 24/7 (that includes gun owners). That is a statistically significant issue that is happening right this secon
  11. So she deserved to die because she was allegedly, potentially, maybe not going to rob/murder someone? The shooter actually did murder someone! This is the kind of reactionary thinking that gets us nowhere. These scenarios don't happen all the time and if they do there is always a ton more details we don't get in the click-bait, disinformation meant news snippets we get. I bet the shooter and the assailants knew each other and had a beef. We still have the damn second amendment even.
  12. Don't forget the ficus plant Michael Moore ran in 2004.
  13. In Blair Jackson's Garcia book, Bruce mentions that he was gonna quit if Jerry didn't get is ass I gear. So Bruce really was a driving force in those 18 months. I loved hearing his tunes mixed in the set list and some of the crazy stuff he led the bad through. Scarlet/Victim/Fire! He's also the reason the Othe Ones were so great, IMO. Would've been so cool if they Dead played backing band for one of his solo albums.
  14. I liked the music on their first few albums. Could not get past the 'created' language. I wish I could've! I'd love to see them do an instrumental record. BTW, there's some documentary about them. Discusses their homes in Iceland and the how content folks are there. Interesting.
  15. Incidentally, the homeowner in the article above shot first and killed someone. Another senseless death. As is the case most of the time, the perps probably had a relationship with the victims that led to gun violence. The stats are even lower for these armed home invasions from random offenders. I'm not saying it doesn't happen, but it's not a blight on our society like automobile deaths, hunger, lack of healthcare etc. I hope these gun owners are taking proper care. Some do not. Not sure about those numbers. The fact remains that having a gun in the house is risky…kind of like sitti
  16. Yeah, I was kind of being sarcastic too. :-) Totally get your point. The moms that I know wear the covering because they want to, not as some statement. The post 9/11 study makes total sense. During my activist days after 9/11 I worked with many Muslim folks who kind, normal and quite leftist.
  17. Actually, the kids of those who own guns are more likely to be killed by their guns rather than us getting killed by them. Black men, ironically, are at the highest risk of being assaulted/killed in the US. I'll never get over that mythical scenario of being robbed at gunpoint in the dead of the night and the man of the house becoming a superhero…somehow getting the gun out of the gun box (assuming it is one), loading it and actually shooting it correctly at said assailant. The statistical possibility of that scenario happening is almost zero. Not to mention the fact that the person who o
  18. There in lies the truth. You aren't conservative, so you're not endorsing this people. The debate framing of the right is ingenious. Middle class folks are deciding between a new coat for winter or the copay for this year's physical…but all their attention is focused on Islam and Mexicans.
  19. The women already wear one, Allah bless them. Some of the kids at my sons school are Muslim and I'm worried about them. They couldn't be more classic liberal Americans…driving Leafs, sending kids to Montessori etc. I know that the moms are on high alert and are at least getting dirty looks.
  20. Ironically, lowering taxes really wouldn't help either and would never happen in our capitalist society. Just another smoke screen issue that continues to hypnotize people. In reality, Democrats (classic liberals) would tax rich people more and take the burden off the middle and lower classes. So, it's the Democrats who would actually lower taxes, decrease the dumb shit taxes are used for (defense) and actually strengthen the middle class. The reactionary subjects of our day can't even see this benign solution.
  21. I was thinking about this the other day…the writing that occurred from 70-72 from Garcia is astounding. I could just keep naming the amazing tunes he knocked out in that time period. Bobby was really coming into his own too.
  22. Tear Stained Eye and Windfall are two of the greatest songs of all time. I remember hearing that album and just being floored at how good it was. I was still in a classic rock/Deadhead phase and hadn't paid attention to much new music so it was exciting to discover them. Really really too bad the Boquist brothers aren't with Jay anymore.
  23. His success so far is really not that surprising to me. This is America and most people are so deadened by the shit they watch, the advertising they endure every minute, the food they eat, generations of familial trauma, horrid jobs etc...all they really can do is be reactionary. The polarization and scapegoating that has just been increasing since the '00 election and 9/11 is so powerful. The one issue infuriating me now is the middle class blaming poor folks for their decline while at the same time protecting, coveting and serving those who put them in this situation in the first place.
  24. Jimmy Herring is almost too good. I remember enjoying the 03 or 04 incarnation with everyone plus Herring and Joan Osborne. That was a great line up.
