  1. Thank you for pointing me in the direction of these films, Beltmann. They both look quite extraordinary.

  3. I don't know how many folks around here would know of this band but in 1988 or 1989 (to the best of my memory) I passed up an opportunity to see the Australian group The Go-Betweens. I was 16 or 17 at the time, out for a night in the city (having probably told my folks I was at a friend's house) and heading to get home beyond curfew. It was around midnight. The band was coming on at 12:30am at The Kardomah Cafe in KIngs Cross here in Sydney. I was with a friend who was in a similar curfew-predicament to me. I looked at the front entrance, back to my watch, the front entrance, watch...my drea
  4. I love that show. It is permanently in my car. It's where I first heard Sugaree. Keith's performance on that song is wonderful.
  5. I don't know much Nick Lowe material at all but I do love the cheekiness of "I Love My Label".

  7. What's this like? A friend sent it to me but I haven't ventured into it yet.
  8. Every song's a comeback, every moment's a little bit later... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4pWiRbanLss&feature=player_detailpage
  9. Of course the other great studio album from this period is Bob Weir's "Ace". I think it's my favourite Non-Dead/Grateful Dead record, closely followed by "Garcia". Black Throated Wind is one of the most sublime songs they ever did.
  10. Good Lord, I've never been through so many emotions in such a short space of time. Was just about to text friends the good news with shaky hands but then read the rest of the posts. I think they're right...these are Nick Lowe shows only. Sydney Opera House website has that date listed as a Nick Lowe show. We can only be patient down here...
  11. Yes, I've used DI but very keen to try out something for onstage monitoring of sound. Old Fender amps a good suggestion, though. I appreciate the reply.
  12. I've been digging this driving around all weekend. Still love it after all these years.
  13. I think the best place to start is with the four books known collectively as the L.A. Quartet: The Black Dahlia The Big Nowhere L.A. Confidential White Jazz It's been a long time since I've read them but from memory, it's best to read them in order. I seem to remember each book was better than the one that came before it. White Jazz is sublime.
  14. This is more of a post-review article from yesterday's Sydney Morning Herald. http://www.smh.com.au/entertainment/music/where-theres-a-wilco-20111006-1la6o.html
  15. I love Ellroy. A number of years ago he came out to Australia for a book reading tour. I went and saw him at the Metro here in Sydney. After the show, he was signing books in the foyer. I had my newly purchased copy of American Tabloid with me. When I reached the front of the line he asked me my name, I told him Fritz. He got really excited. He started in on this rap/monologue about his sitting with his Dad when he was a kid watching television. Every time something came on the box his Dad didn't like he would shout out, "Fuck you, Fritz! Fuck you, Fritz!" He then asked if could he write 'Fu
  16. Hotel New Hampshire took me a while to get through as I stalled a few times but it was worth it in the end. It felt like it started to pick up the pace in the last third or so. I also recommend this: Beautiful book.
  17. It's a reference to the undertow of the ocean (or, as it is mispronounced in the book, the "undertoad").
  18. Absolutely. Will let you know. I went down to my local library this afternoon and found 'The 25th Hour' and 'City of Thieves'. I'm looking forward to them both.
  19. Thank you for the David Benioff dicussion above. I had not heard of him before this but after a little research this morning, I think I've just found my next couple of books to read.
