Someone at Best Buy must've messed up on the pricing
jff replied to jff's topic in Someone Else's Song
That was the case with the Coltrane Impulse box I ordered, too. I was a bit suspicious then, but I received the 5 cd box set. I don't know if this is some sort of insider shenanigans in their pricing/web department, or if it's just a legit deal they throw out from time to time. ALSO, PLEASE NOTE: Please read the description of the box set. In case it's not clear, this is NOT a collection of Coltrane albums. It is a collection of his work on albums by OTHER artists. AND, it does not include his work on Miles Davis' Prestige albums. You can read a full description here: http://100gre -
Someone at Best Buy must've messed up on the pricing

This happened to me once before. I ordered Coltrane's Impulse Albums Volume 1 box set (see below) a year or two ago from Best Buy.com. $11.99, and they honored the price. I told a friend who owns a used record store about it, and he ordered several to re-sell in his store at a mark-up. They honored the price for him, too. This time around, my full price after tax and shipping was $14.64. To give proper credit, I found out about both of these deals on the All About Jazz forum. Nobody over there has reported being charged more than the advertised price, or having their order canc -
Bill Hader's impersonation of the death obsessed 20/20 guy (or whatver show that is) is consistently funny. The best sketch they've done in the last few seasons was probably when Keenan Thompson/Tracy Morgan were prisoners and visited a classroom to scared the kids straight.

I just bought this 5 cd John Coltrane Box Set for 11.99 at Best Buy.com. This set collects his sideman sessions he recorded for Prestige Records during the last half of the '50s. http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=9367393&type=product&id=2038868 I apologize if posting this kind of info is not allowed.

Nels Cline Cover Story in JazzTimes October Issue

Thanks for the reminder. I forgot all about this. UPDATE: Just got my copy. Awesome photo of a long-haired Nels from 1972 on the contents page. -
Wilco featured on cover of Fretboard Journal

Yeah, this is a great magazine. I've never bought one, but every time I see one at Borders it is full of artist features and other articles I want to read. In addition to the artists already mentioned, recent issues have had features on Bill Frisell (as interviewed by Jim Hall), Richard Thompson and Neko Case. Maybe I'll look into getting a subscription. -
I'm a victim of the same phenomenon. If there's any chance at all that the Borders near you will have Nico or Caetano Veloso in stock, then your Borders is far superior to the ones I've been to. The music selection aty Borders is shrinking fast. I keep meaning to get the new Polvo cd. Other than that, I have no idea about new or recent releases. The last couple times I've had a decent Borders coupon I purchased the Pavement double disc sets for Brighten the Corners and Crooked Rain. Those sort of count as old and new.

Some of the best televised music performances I've ever seen were on MTV. Mike Watt (his lineup w/ Nels & two drummers), Violent Femmes, Bjork, etc. I can't remember if those were on 120 Minutes, or some other show...maybe Kennedy's show, or something. Unplugged was good sometimes, too. It's really a shame what happened to MTV.

Is that Ben Stiller?

Songs in the Key of Life. Aerosmith - Rocks But yeah, overall, probably a low point.

Lots of factoids here that strengthen '86 as the worst year: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1986_in_music

In 12th grade, each of the religion classes at my high school had mock weddings. One of my classmates played and sang More Than Words at each wedding ceremony.

Yeah, Rain. That's them. The ad made it look and sound pretty authentic. Almost as authentic as the lookalikes in the Rock Band commercial.

I just saw an ad on tv the other night about a Beatles tribute band playing a six night stand at the Fox Theater in Atlanta. Is there really a demand for this? If each of these shows sell out, they will have played for almost as many people as went to see Paul McCartney's "Green Conert" last month.

I agree. That seemed to come out of nowhere, but they made it believable, and it added a lot of depth to his character. There's never been a shortage of jackasses on tv, but the jackass with a genuinely soft heart is pretty rare.

For me it's a toss up between Pixies "Trompe Le Monde" and Firhose "Flyin' the Flannel."

I missed the pilot, but I liked last night's episode. The security camera/building blocks gag brought some quality lols. I didn't pick up on the Michael Scott thing. Maybe it was more obvious int he first episode.

I would place any Dungen album higher than, say, 142 of the albums on that list.

Yeah, and what about The Coral? Good band. They have at least three excellent albums, maybe four (I haven't heard their newest one). To an extent, I can understand the lack of appreciation towards ones own. I'm american, but I can't stand most of the music that falls under the banner of "americana."

I've been listening to that album a lot lately. Any band that attempted that one would surely screw it up. It's so perfect, and so personal, as it is. I agree that it's an interesting pick, though. Firehose's "Flyin' the Flannel" would be cool to hear. It might not offer Page much to do, but it has lots of intricate tunes that Phish could probably do a really good job with.
