Best box sets/live albums/retrospectives of the decade
jff replied to PopTodd's topic in Someone Else's Song
Those boxes include the original albums, plus five or six discs worth of studio sessions, so yes and no. Are these other boxes that have been named made up entirely of unreleased material? I find that extremely hard to believe. Maybe I'm misunderstanding the rules of this thread. -

I really like it. It's more piano-y than "The Shapes...", but there's plenty of guitars, too. If I were you, my next Timony related purchase would either be Helium's "The Dirt of Luck" or 'No Guitars EP" (god, how I love that one). Mary Timony has a new band called Soft Power, with an album in the works. The one track I've heard from them sounds so great.

Where does this idea of the "old way" come from, anyway? Was there ever a time when it was the norm for bands to take the stage whenever they felt like it? It seems to me that the "old way" was for there to be two shows per night, or more, as was the case with Bill Graham productions at the Fillmore and Winterland. With two shows per night, you can't start/end late or you'd cause problems for the second show. When bands do start late, fans don't usually seem to be very happy. Remember the Guns n' Roses riots after Axl Rose started making a habit of showing up late? I saw the Strokes tw

If I were him I would have bought one, too. Those things will probably be valuable collector's pieces someday.

I was just thinking of that band last night. How is that album? I only have a greatest hits comp, which is really good except for the last few songs.

That one's still pretty new to me, and I like it more every time I listen to it.

I'm with you on most of that tirade, but I can't go along with the above quote. As an 8:30-5er (which eats up at least 10 hours each weekday) I have only a small amount of free time each evening, and I need to manage it as much as possible with as little wasted time as possible. I don't want to wait around in a music venue for god knows how long before the band decides to play. I like to know within a five or ten minute window when the band will hit the stage so I can do other things before heading to the show, such as eat dinner, run errands or take a nap.

Someone at Best Buy must've messed up on the pricing

Interesting. I'll have to look at mine. My copy appeared to be perfect. I thought cutouts were for discontinued items. Side Steps is a new release. -
Not a single album from 2006, 2007 or 2008. That seems odd. Crap list, overall.

I don't know. The guy on the top right looks just like Jeff Tweedy.
-
So, they're playing in the basement of the Alamo? That'll surely be a big adventure.
-
Which one of those guys is Jay Farrar?

(Ventriloquist)Jeff Dunham + crazy success = wtf???
jff replied to Good Old Neon's topic in Tongue-Tied Lightning
I can't stand ventriloquism, so it comes as no surprise to me that this guy is so successful. -
Damn, that is excellent.

I saw one of those yesterday for $250. It must've been a new one. The way I'd use it would be to program rudimentary drum tracks to songs I make up on guitar, then play/record guitar along with them, and then add real drums. I don't need super-realistic drum sounds, just something that is easy to use. I know that's sort of a mixed up way to record, but playing real drums first, unaccompanied, and then adding guitar and other instruments isn't giving me the results I'm happy with. Here's a new machine I found for $100. This would probably be more than sufficient: Zoom MRT3

Last night I dreamt I got tickets for a VF show. I have no idea how that happened.

I going to be recording some percussion overdubs tonight on a few power-pop tunes, and this is helping me flesh out my ideas:

Jaguar has a shorter scale length than a Jazzmaster if I recall. More along the lines of a Fender Mustang, where the Jazzmaster has the same long scale length as a Strat or Telecaster. It's a matter of feel and sound preference. Longer scale length = higher string tension, more difficult bends, twangier overall sound.
