I'm deeply flattered. I've never really seen myself as attractive. -
One thing I think we can be proud of is that we're treating American Muslims a lot better than the Japanese-Americans were treated in World War II and the German-Americans in World War I.

White House press briefing, Sept. 26, 2001. Q As Commander-In-Chief, what was the President's reaction to television's Bill Maher, in his announcement that members of our Armed Forces who deal with missiles are cowards, while the armed terrorists who killed 6,000 unarmed are not cowards, for which Maher was briefly moved off a Washington television station? MR. FLEISCHER: I have not discussed it with the President, one. I have -- Q Surely, as a -- MR. FLEISCHER: I'm getting there. Q Surely as Commander, he was enraged at that, wasn't he? MR. FLEISCHER: I'm getting there, Les. Q O

That was a rhetorical question. I'm staying right here. My fantasy is to lead a guerilla army in the Catskills.

He lives a few towns over from me. If I run in to him or his wife at the cider stand, I will certainly ask. -
Is there any nation on Earth eager to take in a bunch of disaffected American leftists?

Y'know, I was hoping this would be the one fucking year we didn't have to say that. In other news, vibes, please, for Buck O'Neil. KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Negro leagues great Buck O'Neil took a turn for the worse late Thursday but was resting comfortably in a Kansas City hospital Friday, friends said. The 94-year-old O'Neil was admitted to the hospital Sept. 17 with extreme fatigue. O'Neil, one of the driving forces in the creation of the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum, has lost his voice and can only whisper. Bob Kendrick, marketing director for the Negro Leagues Museum in Kansas City, sai

1. The "free press" ARE corporations. 2. And this goes to one's basic view of human nature: it is assumed by some that if the "truth" about the Iraq war - that it was done for reasons other than a direct threat against the security of the United States - had been proclaimed loudly enough in late 2002, there would have been a public outcry that would have stopped it. I disagree. In the post 9/11 environment, I think a lot of Americans wanted to see some Arabs get killed. Also, in the era of the all-volunteer military, the majority of Americans weren't really affected by the deployments, injurie

Aquemeni is a good album. My new reporter, who I am totally crushing upon, went to Reed College. I am never for any reason ever stepping into the state of Colorado. It's just not safe there. They need UN peacekeeping troops or something. -

Progresso Southwestern chicken. I guess by "make" I meant "pour from can into bowl and microwave." My moms makes an awesome pumpkin cream soup at Thanksgiving. -
Sure; the government and press haven't fought this much since the days of the Alien and Sedition Acts. New York has a Shield Law that allows journalists to protect their confidential sources. There is no such law on the federal level, and there won't be as long as the GOP is in charge. (What I said before is true, though. Working journalists are expected to take whatever the government can dish out, without whining. For life, if necessary.)

I am about to make some soup. Had a lovely dinner tonight with some of our friends. -

Throughout the history of journalism in America, prosecutors and judges have tried to get reporters to divulge information they vowed to keep secret. If this happens to you as a journalist, you take your lumps and go to jail. Any journalist who caves is viewed as a total pariah in the profession and couldn't even get a job delivering the newspaper. And your average American doesn't really get heated up over the fate of reporters, unless they're really hot, like Katie Couric or Soledad O'Brien.

In this case, Lakshmi vibes seem more appropriate.

That could well be the case. The '80s psychedelics we had were pretty good.

Nice work; beautiful child. Do you want me to send the three bucks or so of Canadian change I have collected for her college fund?

--> QUOTE(Paul B @ Sep 27 2006, 03:36 PM) I know someone who claims that EVERYTHING was better in the 70s. Sorta hard to argue with that mentality but it doesnt stop me from trying. It seems to be generally agreed that today's marijuana is better than '70s marijuana.

I'm sorry. What it comes down to in the postseason is starting pitching, and the Mets' starters are a rather large question mark. Pedro may not even pitch in the first round, they're saying tonight. Glavine and Hernandez look good, not great; Trachsel is the exact opposite of the kind of "power pitcher" one likes to have in these short series. And the offense had been producing like the '62 Mets the last few weeks. You just can't turn it on at will, you know.
