  1. The Large Hadron Collider MAY provide insight into the nature of things so we might one day have the Star Trek universe, but that's not really what it's designed for. IRDB - won't happen in 20 years, except maybe for some very forward-looking European countries. U.S.? MAYBE in 50 years; with China and India a couple decades later, unless peak oil happens very soon. GON - I wish humanity was forward-looking enough to plan for this kind of thing, but history would seem to indicate otherwise. Like with many things, fucking would seem to be the root of the problem.
  2. Yes - Christianty and Islam are both expansionist, which has led to, uhh, some problems, though I will say that religion in many cases is something which people who want to fight with each other over resources and land use as a patina.
  3. From the Gospel according to St. Matthew: And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, "All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. Amen."
  4. Yeah. Running out of cheaply obtained fossil fuels is what it will take to make a permanent switch to renewable.
  5. The debate of progressive vs. regressive taxes has pretty much been settled. Iraq as a tremendous waste of lives and money has pretty much been settled. And if the rich think they're being overtaxed now, they should talk to the rich of the Eisenhower era.
  6. No, I think he means that an iPod has a powerful enough audio output to make the headphones work properly.
  7. Fucking Bud Light pisses me off with their stupid commercials during the football game.
  8. Hard to beat the Belgians at beer. Here are some other beers I have enjoyed: Paulaner Salvator Brooklyn Brewery's Oktoberfest, Manhattan Project and Dark Chocolate Stout Ommegang's Three Philosophers Unibroue's Maudite Keegan Ales' Hurricane Kitty, Mother's Milk stout and Jo Mama coffee stout Rolling Rock, before they stopped brewing it in Latrobe Guinness, of course Whitbread ale John Courage Most Saranac beers
  9. Had some Keegan Ales' Super Kitty the other day, and it was exceedingly good. From their website: "Super Kitty is our first seasonal beer to be sold in stores. At around 12% ABV, it is meant to be cellared, sipped and appreciated by the finest palates. Brewed using the excess from our Hurricane Kitty recipe, this beer is combined with 100lbs. of local Hudson Valley honey, oak chips and several additions of hops throughout the 6 month conditioning period. Production is limited to 250- 1 liter bottles, and usually sells out before we can get it bottled. For those of you who are patient, you'll f
  10. Some things you can legislate, but the shifting of, oh, the entire power infrastructure of human society is not one of them. That's just too big for anything but the Invisible Hand. We'll stop using fossil fuels when alternate sources become the cheaper solution. Now, one can debate the morality and practicality of trying to bring that day a little earlier by carbon taxes and incentives for renewable energy ...
  11. History is important. It can't be a free society without open inquiry.
  12. It's a tough question, but one which must be asked as such a large portion of health care costs come near the end of the line. Jane Brody told me this in an interview I did with her this summer: "If we may be crass for a moment, physicians and hospitals don't get paid for doing nothing. Doctors and hospitals get paid for interventions...They get major reimbursements for feeding tubes, but they don't get reimbursements for sitting down and feeding them."
  13. Yeah, Palin (or whoever was pushing her buttons) was dangerously deceptive with all that death panel stuff - see the OpEd posted by Cryptique in the "Spineless" thread for more info. She deserves pretty much all the obloquy she is getting for that, as well as making people have to look at/listen to that tree stump Levi Johnston. I do not consider myself an elitist or closed-minded, but she brings nothing of value to the public discourse, and actually stands in the way of progress by riling up the rile-able. And yes, I don't like intellectually dishonest liberals either, and boy do we get a lot
  14. New York City editors don't know shit. Down there, it's all about who you blow, who you give blow to and how much you look like Wang Chung.
  15. This thread is much better when it sticks to the blasphemy and eschews commentary on the blasphemy or tediously wanders into the territory of what people like.
  16. Do you not just read the AP feed like I did when I worked at a grown-up newspaper?
  17. I'll be the anti-echo - Tweedy solo holds little appeal for me.
  18. Maybe you can get a court order. Why would these guys bother? There wouldn't be enough money in it for either of them - are as many people going to go to a UT show than a Wilco or a Son Volt show? - to tolerate putting up with the other.
  19. Don't everybody pee themselves, but I have never heard an Uncle Tupelo album in its entirety.
