Papillon Parade
SPEED OF SOUND - CHRIS BELL also Master and Everyone - Bonnie "Prince" Billy you say there are other fish in the seaand you say that another gathers roses for mebut on this we will agreeyou will do what you want/and I will do what I wantI'm now free a master and everyoneservant of all and servant to none. Nice choice. I've gotta go with I Gave You from Bonnie: I gave you a child, and you didn't want itThat's the most that I have to give.I gave you a house, and you didn't haunt itNow where am I supposed to live.I gave you a tree and you did not embrace itI gave you a nightmare and you didn't chase itI'd give you a dream and you'd only wake from itNow I'll never go to sleep again.I'd give you a treasure and you'd only take from itLook at the hole where jewelry had beenBaby oh babyWhy must you escape from itThis love that we once called our friend. I gave you my body and you ate aplentyI gave you ten lives and you wasted twenty. Now I'm standing empty, helpless and bare, without a morsel left of me to giveAnd you, you have vanished, into the airThe air in which I must live
FourStrongWinds
All great songs mentioned here, I will add however Joni Mitchell's 'A Case Of You' what a painful painful piece of art, aswell Graham Nash's 'Simple Man', I always thought this song was a little naff, and lyrically a bit cliche, infact I think it might be one of the most honest, plain, breakup songs ever I just wanna hold you, I dont wanna hold you down I love that line
CommerceComet
i just got an idea for a great ipod playlist. although i hope a breakup doesn't follow.
Fritz
Sometimes this is just too painful to listen to... Up To Me Everything went from bad to worse, money never changed a thing,Death kept followin', trackin' us down, at least I heard your bluebird sing. Now somebody's got to show their hand, time is an enemy,I know you're long gone,I guess it must be up to me. If I'd thought about it I never would've done it, I guess I would've let it slide,If I'd lived my life by what others were thinkin', the heart inside me would've died.I was just too stubborn to ever be governed by enforced insanity,Someone had to reach for the risin' star,I guess it was up to me. Oh, the Union Central is pullin' out and the orchids are in bloom,I've only got me one good shirt left and it smells of stale perfume. In fourteen months I've only smiled once and I didn't do it consciously,Somebody's got to find your trail,I guess it must be up to me. It was like a revelation when you betrayed me with your touch,I'd just about convinced myself that nothin' had changed that much. The old Rounder in the iron mask slipped me the master key,Somebody had to unlock your heart,He said it was up to me. Well, I watched you slowly disappear down into the officers' club,I would've followed you in the door but I didn't have a ticket stub.So I waited all night 'til the break of day, hopin' one of us could get free,When the dawn came over the river bridge,I knew it was up to me. Oh, the only decent thing I did when I worked as a postal clerkWas to haul your picture down off the wall near the cage where I used to work. Was I a fool or not to try to protect your identity? You looked a little burned out, my friend,I thought it might be up to me. Well, I met somebody face to face and I had to remove my hat,She's everything I need and love but I can't be swayed by that.It frightens me, the awful truth of how sweet life can be,But she ain't a-gonna make me move,I guess it must be up to me. We heard the Sermon on the Mount and I knew it was too complex,It didn't amount to anything more than what the broken glass reflects. When you bite off more than you can chew you pay the penalty,Somebody's got to tell the tale,I guess it must be up to me. Well, Dupree came in pimpin' tonight to the Thunderbird Cafe,Crystal wanted to talk to him, I had to look the other way.Well, I just can't rest without you, love, I need your company,But you ain't a-gonna cross the line,I guess it must be up to me. There's a note left in the bottle, you can give it to Estelle,She's the one you been wond'rin' about, but there's really nothin' much to tell.We both heard voices for a while, now the rest is history,Somebody's got to cry some tears,I guess it must be up to me. So go on, boys, and play your hands, life is a pantomime,The ringleaders from the county seat say you don't have all that much time. And the girl with me behind the shades, she ain't my property,One of us has got to hit the road,I guess it must be up to me. And if we never meet again, baby, remember me,How my lone guitar played sweet for you that old-time melody. And the harmonica around my neck, I blew it for you, free,No one else could play that tune,You know it was up to me. bigshoulders
Star Room Boys Back in the day, I really loved the Star Room Boys. That whole album Why Do Lonely Men and Women Want to Break Each Other's Hearts would go well with the whole feeling sorry for oneself, crying in your beer kind of jag. I honestly have no reason to bring that one off the shelf, except for nostalgia... which is good enough reason anyhow. I thought I was the only one that knew who those guys were. It's too bad they busted up. I saw one of their last shows in Asheville, NC. They broke up shortly thereafter. I can't recall what year it was. cheers,Kevin

Both are excellent records. Not sure if you were aware of this, but their steel guitarist John Neff is now a full-time member of Drive-By Truckers. I know he's done a bunch of side projects with Athens-based bands as well.
ChooChooCharlie
Lotta good picks on here, and obviously Blood on the Tracks is the ultimate break-up album. Here's my favorite breakup lyric and maybe song ever. Paul Simon's title track from the classic Graceland album: She comes back to tell me she's gone,As if I didn't know thatAs if I didn't know my own bed,As if I'd never noticed,The way she brushed her hair from her forehead,And she said loooooooosing loveIs like a window in your heart,Everybody sees you're blown apart,Everybody sees the wind blow Goosebumps every time. I think the DBTs were a side-project for Neff, back then. I love me some pedal steel. That's great to know that he's still playing. Thanks, Cortez! kevin
Doug
"Soul and Fire" by Sebadoh It's all a matterof soul and fire.Infatuationor true desire. The thrill of discovery, divine intervention;cruel, cruel change, pain of rejection. As you walk awaythink of all the joy we shared. If you decide you need me,I'll be wondering if I care... Not there to soothe your soul, friend to tender friend.I think our love is coming to an end. King persuader, congratulations. You share her heart, you bought her soul Princess confusioncome to me again.Saying goodbyewas so much fun. When you walk awayfeel the freedom in your heart. There's a joy in letting go,free to find a love apart. When I lose controlI need a kind, forgiving friend, but I think our love is coming to an end. I know our love is coming to an end

He was not an official member in the early days. Now, with the departure of Jason Isbell, he's a full-fledged member of the band. His pedal steel and slide guitar on the new Truckers album, Brighter Than Creation's Dark, is amazing.
