Hey Bulldog

Anyone ever see this before? I was floored when I found it.

George said about this in 1999:

"We now have an unreleased video of 'Hey Bulldog,' as you know. When we were in the studio recording 'Bulldog,' apparently it was at a time when they needed some footage for something else, some other record (Lady Madonna), and a film crew came along and filmed us. Then they cut up the footage and used some of the shots for something else. But it was Neil Aspinall who found out that when you watched and listened to what the original thing was, we were recording 'Bulldog.' This was apparently the only time we were actually filmed recording something, so what Neil did was, he put (the unused footage) all back together again and put the 'Bulldog' soundtrack onto it, and there it was!"

I think it was probably going to be used in the Anthology series and maybe was - I can not recall.

The info on this is in the Lewisjohn book - too bad it is not online somewhere.

You would think everything Beatle-related is online by now. But apparently not.

This wasn't in the Anthology, to my recollection.

Dig John's muttonchops.

It may be on the DVD - it has more stuff.

May be on one of the bootlegs - made from stuff they left out.

1999 -- I wonder what they attached this to then? A TV special?

Yeah, it was part of a half hour documentary VH-1 did on the video re-realease of Yellow Submarine and the Yellow Submarine soundtrack disc that came out in 1999. I have it buried somewhere in my VHS collection at home. It was pretty interesting.

Ahh, I recall that, sort of. Thanks. For a short while when that re-release was announced, there was talk in the news that a never-before-heard Beatles song had surfaced. I remember one media outlet referring to it as a "rocker." The excitement turned into a WTF though, when it was revealed as "Hey Bulldog." I still don't get who dropped the ball back then, the media or Apple Corps.

The Compete Beatles pg. 134

Sunday February 11 1968

The Beatles were undoubtedly in a productive mood at this point and time. They had completed their planned three songs so quickly, in just four sessions. that a 2.30-midnight session pre-booked for the studio two on Saturday 10 February was canceled. On this day, 11 February, the plan ostensibly, was for the group to be filmed working in the studio, the clip to be given to television stations worldwide to promote 'Lady Madonna'. But once inside the studio the Beatles decided to record, the result being 'Hey Bulldog', started, finished and mixed for mono in ten hour, and recorded on straight four-track, without and reduction mixes.

There was no question of 'Hey Bulldog' rivaling 'Lady Madonna' for the next a-side. John had specifically composed it for the film.

[Note, Although it does indeed appear on the latter, only some prints on the film include the 'Hey Bulldog' sequence. It was edited out of most copies.]

While the cameras whirled for the 'Lady Madonna' film John led the Beatles through ten takes of 'Hey Bulldog'. . .
