Synthesizer Patel
Who cares? No one called the troops morons That wasn't my point. You can say that that was what he meant, or that was not what he meant - I personally am not too interested either way, but I do find it interesting to look at exactly how politically suicidal it is, if that was what he meant, and whether or not that should be the case or not. jhc
Maybe. I haven't seen much of it in the news, to be honest, and I'm a pretty avid reader. It'll definitely be on Fox News tonight, but- It seems like the biggest part of this is that conservatives want it to die because the clarification is much more damning than Kerry's gaffe. Dems want him to keep apologizing and explaining what he really meant. Dude, this was on every major news outlet all of yesterday. Since the republicans keep demanding apologies and saying Kerry insulted the troops, I dont think they want it to go away.
jff
I went to CNN Center today for lunch. CNN were all over the story as of two hours ago. Conservatives absolutely do not want this to die, and they won't let it.
cryptique
The silver lining in all of this is that maybe we'll be spared a 2008 Kerry presidential campaign. Too bad he decided to grow some balls now, instead of two years ago.

Guest Jules
By the way. This will not hurt the democrats next Wednesday. While it might not hurt, it definitely won't help. There are people out there who will be swayed by this. No doubt.

owl
Every republican in America, plus lots of democrats and undecideds, right now believe he said soldiers are uneducated and/or stupid. Are you implying that every Republican, some Dems, and some Undecideds are too uneducated/stupid to put it into context?

What did he say that wasn't true anyway. If your in the military you are predominantly uneducated and stupid - and thank God for it too - It helps wash away our guilt. quarter23cd
Are you implying that every Republican, some Dems, and some Undecideds are too uneducated/stupid to put it into context? I'm so tired of speculating what hypothetical people somewhere might be thinking due to . I'm taking my tinfoil hat and going home. I haven't yet met a person who said, "Wow, you know, I was planning on voting this one way, but, you, you know, that Kerry guy who isn't currently running for anything said something I didn't like and that has changed my whole outlook on life." Maybe those people exist. Surely they must, somewhere, but I can't bring myself to care right now. Yeah, Kerry said a dumb thing in terms of the way it could be interpreted. I understand what he was trying to say and, I think, so do most people who have actually bothered to read past the headlines. But I also know that whole point here is to create a circus to change the subject. It reeks of desperation. I know, I know...desperation sometimes wins, but fuck I'm tired of this. Its like every time somebody steps forward and says something like "You know, the war isn't going well" and the administration response is equivalent to saying "Hey, look! Alien hermaphrodites are molesting kittens, and this guy supports it!" and the camera crews follow. I'm fucking tired of it. My TV is locked on Nickeodeon until further notice. Well, in fairness, although the military has always been disproportionately poor and uneducated, I think it may be more dramatically so now than in the past when your father and grandfather served. Don't get me wrong - I come from a military family too - and some currently active, so I know what I speak. You think thoes men and women in the military right now give a fuck about what we think. Of course - My father is the best in the world too.

bjorn_skurj
What hasn't been said in all this is that if you're smart and join the military, you can get a pretty good gig for yourself, in the rear with the gear.

caliber66
I've spent my entire life around the army, and though the military certainly has its share of losers (as does any profession), I've never gotten the impression that those that join are predominantly stupid. Granted, much of my experience has been with officers, who tend to be very well educated (all college graduates, higher ranks require postgraduate degrees), but the ranks of enlisted are a cross section of the population and consist of a wide range of abilities and aptitudes. Those who serve on battleships, B-2s and tanks would not entrust the maintenance of their telecommunications, logistics, electronics and computer systems to stupid people. Most NCOs are college educated, and many have advanced degrees. There are those who fall through the cracks, so to speak, but to suggest that most of the military is staffed by stupid people, is, if not itself stupid, ignorant at the least.
