The most inappropriate use of a song in a commercial ever (IMO) is when "Heroin" was in that Nissan ad a couple years ago. My favorite song ever, but I have no idea why anyone would want that song associated with their product. Granted, it was just an instrumental passage, and most people wouldn't recognize it, but still, odd choice.

The most disappointed I ever was in hearing a song in a commercial was "London Calling" for Jaguar.

All I can say is I'm glad I have never heard either of the songs you mentioned. Two of my favorites as well...not to sound like Dr.Phil but you'd have to ask "What the hell were they thinking?"

On the Case: If you missed last year's all-Bruce episode of Cold Case, titled "8 Years," you're in luck: it re-airs this Saturday, January 20, at 8 p.m. ET/PT on CBS. Songs used: "No Surrender," "Bobby Jean," "Brilliant Disguise," "Glory Days," "I'm on Fire," "Drive All Night," "Stolen Car" "Atlantic City," and "One Step Up."

I saw this show. I didn't think it was badly done or anything, but by the end of the show I couldn't tell if I was watching a show or listening to a greatest hits compilation. I found myself trying to guess which song would be played next based on plot twists. ("Ok, that guy is getting in his car. I bet he is driving to Atlantic City." And then the music started and I was like "Yep, I was right!") :P

Dunno if it made for effective storytelling (I forget what the show was about), but at least its a fun game for music geeks. :monkey

I remember seeing Iggy interviewed about one of the commercials that used "Lust for Life" (as for a while, it seemed as though it was in every other commercial on TV). He basically said that, well, it's an old song, and his fans already have the things that they associate the song with. Fans who have a history with the song will not have it changed by a commercial. But the commercial did provide him with a little bit more financial security, and has the potential to introduce the song and the rest of his music to a new audience, and that's not a bad thing.

In general, I feel uncomfortable with bands I like selling their music to commercial advertisers, but I really don't have a problem with it in principal. So many other people make money off them along the way; its only fair that they get their chance to cash in. Especially since we only even debate this when we're talking about good artists that we like. Often times we seem to be more offended when someone who does work that we enjoy makes money than when someone who's work we hate does. No one would complain if Britney Spears sold a song to a commercial, and yet when it's someone we like, then we're upset by it. Sometimes it takes some work to not let those commercials become too associated with the songs in our minds so that we can continue to love those songs in the same way that we did, but we should probably be happy when good artists are rewarded with a little financial security.

What I hate more than anything is when a song is re-written to fawn over the product being advertised. If you want to use the song, fine -- just don't fuck with the lyrics. If you want a jingle for your product, write one.

I take it you weren't a fan of the Sunkist version of Good Vibrations?

Speaking of that, some of the dudes in Modern English were not happy when I Melt With You was used in a BK commercial a few years ago.

I heard this on a commercial last night -- muzac-ized and performed by a woman -- and I cannot recall the product. I do recall being more than a little sad..... :ohwell

I thought it was interesting a couple years ago when Modest Mouse popped up in a minivan ad. It didn't really bother me or anything, but it was an eyebrow-raiser.

Not sure if there is a subconscious connection or not, but looking back on it now, I don't really care to listen to Modest Mouse anymore. I do, however, now own a minivan. Somebody explain this one to me. :hmm

I guess the head dude said he did not care - as it gave him money to go on a trip.

there is an I melt with you cover with a breathy female singer...i have it on my iPod somewhere. I kind of like it but i am not sure i heard it in a commercial.

i am all for bands making $ off their songs--they wrote them, it is work product, they should get paid!, but like anyone else who touts a product, i would like for the artist to actually support/believe in the product for which their song is shilling. I can buy (so to speak) Lance Armstrong and Sheryl Crow driving Subaru all wheel drive wagons, but M.Ward in a cadillac? Too idealistic i guess, but i wouldn't sell guns for walmart, but i'd do free commercials for Coca Cola, or Miracle Gro.

The only real ad to get under my skin for its jingle/choice in music, was Devo re-doing "Whip it" for those Swiffer commercials. Fuck that was annoying. I couldn't really understand the Mothersbaugh brothers doing it - aren't they getting enough money from doing soundtracks for Wes Andersen, Disney AND Nickelodeon? I guess not.
