Analogman
what is country skank...? according to wikipedia there is no such term. however, i offer you this... Skank is slang and a pejorative term used in the Western World to describe an extremely self entitled or promiscuous female.[1] It can also refer to how a woman is dressed.[2] Skanks are supposedly shallow women, obsessed with celebrity lifestyle and emulating or focused on the attainment of material goods. This term is distinct from "slut" in that it usually implies a slovenly or ill-featured woman. Originally denoting a bad smell[citation needed] or a filthy surface[3], "skank" has come to refer to someone who is physically repugnant for their filth, and figuratively applied to someone who is morally or socially repugnant for their behavior and demeanor, most often sexual conduct.[4] a search of images under country skank will bring up various "classy" photos including britney spears. i'm thinking skronk was what the reviewer was reaching for which is most commonly associated with various forms of jazz. Women who fuck a lot are whores - men who fuck a lot are heros. Didn't they teach you that when you were young?

Synthesizer Patel
skank in england just means dirty, really. someone can be a skank (not just a female, but a male too sometimes); and something can be skanky, or skanked-up, or full of skank, if it is dirty. (i am from england, by the way) i think that the reviewer is referencing to the dirty guitar sounds that sometimes occur on the album (see You Are My Face, by way of an example)

Guest Jules
it said 7th "studio" album. Yeah, there's no way to get to "7" unless you count the Mermaid albums as 1. Either that, or just a mistake.

uncle wilco
re: The Guardian: Is there no longer sancity in waiting at least a month before release to post full-blown reviews?in the olden days, leaks were hard to come by and those albums certainly weren't spread among the masses like the common cold...these days...not so much. one in the review biz has to keep up with the times and this would be an example. especially with blogs and boards such as this. the traditional music critic imo is fading in importance and it is definately not a career choice i would recommend for anyone. at least for those who expect a paycheck from it. everyone's a critic now with an avenue to voice their opinion and some "hack" critics are far better than the "professionals". TheMaker
I want to be a music critic... I briefly studied journalism in college because I used to think the same thing. Then I realized that uncle wilco's attitude is basically right. It's a losing battle. I write for a few online publications, but it's certainly not something that pays the bills. In another two decades, I won't be surprised if writing generally comes to be regarded as an unpaid profession.

quarter23cd
In another two decades, I won't be surprised if writing generally comes to be regarded as an unpaid profession.Hasn't it always been? I worked as a below-entry-level editorial asst. for a couple publishers right after college. That was supposed to be my steady job while I tried to get some freelance articles published in local papers and work on my fiction writing on the side.(and it was far from "steady") I think I was making roughly $10 a year, before taxes. It was ok when I was single and had nobody but myself to support, but when I decided to get married it dawned on me that "Hey, programming computers is pretty cool, too!" I don't have much time for writing anymore, and I do miss it. I have the utmost respect for anybody who follows that path (and sticks to it). Not the easiest of roads to travel... TheMaker
Evidence Against I think authors will always stand a chance at making money, no matter how slim that chance might be. I guess I should've clarified by stating that I was mostly thinking along the lines of journalists and such, what with the decline in circulation of print newspapers, ebbing advertising revenues, migration to the web, and so on. I have the utmost respect for anybody who follows that path (and sticks to it). Not the easiest of roads to travel... Absolutely! It takes real grit and determination to hack it as a writer. I definitely relate to a lot of what you wrote.
