Sir Stewart
That hand wave Pacino gives as he's about to light the cigarette is awesome.
welch79
agreed that the final scene in part i is fine. to the guys that haven't seen it: do yourself a favor and watch it. to whoever said they are purposefully trying to avoid it: stop being so damn prideful and watch a good movie. i don't know of many other movies in which character development is so dynamic (michael/pacino). great, great movie. btw, i hadn't seen this movie until very recently when i received the same gasp from my buddies when i said i hadn't seen it. one of em promptly lent me the dvd box set. i still haven't watched part ii or iii, but i plan on it real soon. after this, i plan on watching the rocky movies, which i have also never seen (save bits and pieces on tbs). *gasp*
Sir Stewart
after this, i plan on watching the rocky movies, which i have also never seen (save bits and pieces on tbs).Bit of a caveat: Rocky's character arc isn't quite as impressive as Michael's.
Guest Jules
I'd like to add that I dislike most of Pacino's other work (maybe I missed something, but I found Scarface barely watchable, and I've just never found him believable), but I could watch GF I,II any time any day. Edit: ok, except for Glengarry Glen Ross and Serpico.

I can understand what you mean, though. I like Pacino much better in The Godfather movies than anything else I've seen him in.

Lammycat
Scarface is actually a pretty bad movie. It was panned pretty hard in the 80s when it came out but has since risen to cult status. Although intense at times, really, kind of a shitty movie. Other decent Pacino movies: Scent of A WomanSea of LoveDog Day (mentioned earlier)Glengary (mentioned earlier)Serpico The Godfather is his crowning moment, though. Sir Stewart
I like Pacino's Richard III movie. I don't see it on IMDB though...Looking For Richard, I think it was called?
PigSooie
I have never seen this movie.
Lammycat
Yeah, he does do a nice job of acting in Richard. I'd forgotten about that one.
Mr. Heartbreak
I just saw ...And Justice for All for the first time, and that's a pretty good one, too. He was nominated for an Oscar for it.
Beltmann
I like Pacino's Richard III movie. I don't see it on IMDB though...Looking For Richard, I think it was called?Yeah, Looking for Richard. It's less about that specific play than about the process of adapting a classic play, which is what was fun about it. And Scarface is pretty damn near unwatchable. I loathe that movie. bobbob1313
This thread reminds me of the Family GUy when PEter admits he doesn't like the Godfather. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bZdzv0f02go

I guess that's my point. He either gets nominated for an Oscar, or it's awful. I'm glad I'm not alone on Scarface; I guess my friends are just idiots. Oh, and Heat? What a piece of crap that was. Deniro and Pacino in the same scene; who gives a shit when Val Kilmer is in the movie too? Anyway, I guess this thread wasn't about Pacino in the first place.

Sir Stewart
Something just struck me re: the scene in II where they're going over the logistics of killing Roth. Michael makes Tom Hagen says he's staying with the family and in the process disrespects Tom by mentioning his mistress. Not that having a mistress is a crime in the family, but it seems like something that's not spoken of, particularly in a business meeting. The way Michael does it though confounds Tom ("Why do you hurt me Michael?"). I've always wondered exactly why Michael acts this way - I chalked it up to him losing his trust in people. But I think it speaks to how he feels about the importance of family - Michael, as far as we know, never had a 'goomar' - am I right?
JUDE
You are right, but I think it is more to illustrate how he has changed and how "the family" has replaced his family.
dondoboy
I'm in the camp of thinking that II may be better than the first. I have several reasons. First, I love the development of Vito from average family man/small business owner to someone who is respected (and feared). I think it comes about not only through his killing the Black Hand but his genuine caring (albeit with a clinched fist) about others in his community. I love the changing relationship between Clemenza and Vito. Clemenza's the tough but eventually respects the smarts of Vito. The scene where he gets the piece of fruit for his wife is beautiful and shows such depth in the character. Sitting on the stairs talking to Michael. When he loses his job, but doesn't blame the shopkeeper because he knows what's going on but doesn't say a word. On top of that massive character development is the Hyman Roth saga and Fredo's downfall. I genuinely love all of the movies, including three which I thought gave Michael a sort of crushing humility, but I think its the romance of number two that puts it over for me. Guest Gym Teacher Man
Give me Goodfellas anyday - now, THAT could very well be the best movie ever made. i haven't read much in this thread, but this early comment stood out to me. i'd like to second it. i like the godfather and part II, but much prefer Goodfellas. Goodfellas is a movie about the mob. Godfather is a movie about family that happens to be about a mob family. I go back and forth over which one is better -- GF 1 or GF 2 -- but they are always ranked 1 and 2 in my all-time movies list.

The whole family loyalty, feeling obligation to live up to the expectations of your family, growing into a mold you never thought you'd fit but were destined to fill, etc. stuff should strike a chord with most people...just gotta see past the mafia stuff.
