Big Perm
I'm moving to L.A. roughly beginning of June - the Fall, October maybe as long as December. I thought it might be worth a shot to see if anyone who is there and roams here, might possibly know of any sublets, or places of rent. That kind of thing. Anyway, I'm headed West. alison the wilca
LA is HUGE. whereabouts are you wanting to rent and/or work?
Big Perm
The nature of my job is calling for me to be as close to West L.A. West Hollywood area as I can get, which I understand is not that easy. But, I have a couch for at least the first week or so, if nothing comes together right now. Ms. Perm is staying here in Austin, tough choice, but her real estate business is now taking off after two years, and we love our house, so we have been together long enough that we are willing to make this sacrifice for the greater good. And the job is worth the risk. So, we'll see.

alison the wilca
even 1 bedrooms/studios in that area are very expensive. if you are okay with a bit of commute, try a community just outside that area... maybe silverlake? even there is a lot of money. i rented a 2 bdrm waaaaay south on the northern edge of the oc and even it was 1400/mo. there are so many communities to choose from in LA, even just around west hollywood, that it pays to do some research and check back here to see what other people think of an area- it'll help to get an area narrowed down, too. Hodie
I'll leave the obvious "I'd like to live on Fairfax between Melrose and Beverly" for another day, and say instead that though I only know limited neighborhoods in LA from visiting (rather than from living there), of the ones I do know I'd love to live in Silverlake or Los Feliz. I'm one of those people who used to think I didn't like LA, but I feel right at home in both of those places.
pnêyu
EDIT: I just reread your post and realized you were talking about west Hollywood, as opposed to Westside. That changes everything. Anyway, Los Feliz, Silverlake, Echo Park, Hancock Park, mid-Wilshire, Century City, downtown, and Koreatown might be worth a shot. You might even be able to live in San Fernando Valley. You should probably stay away from Santa Monica or Venice Beach, as attractive as they seem. But the same caveats apply: it's all dependent on how much you're willing to spend and how much of a commute you can stand. You might want to start perusing craigslist to see what LA may have in store for you:http://losangeles.craigslist.org/hhh/ (I'd limit my search to Central LA if you want anything near Hollywood. SF Valley might work out too, but you'd want to stay close: say, Burbank, Studio City, most likely.) Disclaimer: I haven't actually lived in LA, but I've spent many hours contemplating the possibilities.
Big Perm
thanks everybody, great info. I also thought wouldn't like it, but after spending a week there two weeks ago, I fell in love with much of it.

ms. yvon
hey perm, you might look around culver city: not too far from the west side (sony studios is there, close to fox studios), but may be less expensive than a westside apt. also look around mar vista/ocean park neighborhoods. if you're not afeared of spending some time in traffic, come to los feliz or silver lake! i'll draw you a map of the good record stores/burritos/beer spots. is FNL moving production out here or something?! OOO
i live in south central so i won't be much help but i hear good things about silverlake. I think there are ok places in the apartments on wilshire maybe. P.S. I think I am making the exact opposite move as you at a similar yime. Los Angeles to Austin. I like your guys's music scene. Big Perm
Just to update for those who care, here's what has gone done. Apologies for for spelling errors. After FNL finished season 1, I went to work on "Fireflies in the Garden", which is filming here, stars Ryan Reynolds, Julia Roberts, Willem Dafoe, Emily Watson, Carrie-Anne Moss and is directed by first time director, Dennis Lee (his script as well). I was hired as an assistant to Marco Weber, the Executive Producer, he helps head Senator Entertainment, which used to be just distribution and now is in production as well. M has had a career since roughly 1992. He produced The Thirteenth Floor, and then got more attention when he produced Igby Goes Down. When I started with him, he had his family here, I would do some business whatnot, and help out doing a lot of personal whatnot as well, take his family around and blah blah blah. During the second week, I was at home on a Monday night at 8:45 pm. My phone rings, my wife grabs the phone and says "It's Marco" and hands it to me. I answer and Marco explains (In a deep german accent) that he needs an 80 gig ipod and a set of the expensive Bose headphones from the apple store. He asks, "Jeremy, do you think you can do this?" I said sure. Now, the apple store is about 15 minutes from my house, but I flew away and made it just before the mall closed. So, I get him on the phone, grab the items and found out they will not let him pay over the phone with his credit card. So, I kindly ask how long the manager will be there, he said you got twenty minutes. So, I fly downtown and get his ID and credit card, that is waiting with a bellhop downstairs. Then haul ass back to the mall and run in to find no one at the apple store. I bang on the glass, then emerges the manager, and he lets me in, and rings me up. I thank him and offer to buy him a beer or asked if I could do anything for him, he said no. I'm leaving the mall, and dial up M, and tell him the good news. This whole debacle has gone on for almost an hour. Once he ehars mission accomplished he promptly tells me, "Congratulations, you just got yourself a job as my assistant." I was surprised, really surprised. He then instructed me to come back to the hotel and we would celebrate with drinks and discuss the future. There we discussed a lot, and he said some wonderful things. Said he wanted to test me, just to see what kind of effort I put forth, not really to do with getting that stuff, but would I try once and quit, make an excuse, or go down in flames at least. It was all pretty much summed up with, "You wanna work in the movie business, then you should take this job." The deal is to go and work for him for his next movie, which is the first Bret Easton Ellis novel, The Informers. Which will star, Heath Ledger, Orlando bloom, and a bunch of others. With Bret Easton Ellis as an EP as well as the writer of the script. So quite exciting for me as I am a huge fan od his. So, long sotry short, I'm stoked. With the support of Ms. Perm and all my friends and my parents - I feel good taking this shot, which I pretty much can't pass up. Ms. Perm and I will have a struggle no doubt, but we have our eye on what we hope is the bigger picture. This road has been a long one, and for me to think that last August I was on a roof building houses when I got the call to work on FNL, and then got into the show, made a behind the scenes doc for the DVD, and now this. I feel like I've made up for lost time struggling through a lot blue collar jobs for so long, all of which gave me good scripts, but I'm excited to see what's next. So, that's the story and we'll see where this leads.
