a.miller
That's right, the man who brought us Borat will be playing Freddie Mercury. Story in SPIN Magazine. This reminds me of one of the Borat skits where Cohen asks, "Is Freddie Mercury a homosexual?"
jimmyjimmy
Don't know what to make of this. Not terribly keen on these life stories of the celebrity set anyway. one thing tho....Much as I dig Johnny Depp I can't see him as Freddy Mercury.
a.miller
I have a hard time taking Cohen seriously, given his comedic repuation. Perhaps he will turn in a fantastic performance
jimmyjimmy
At least there are some physical similarities between Mercury and Cohen.I can totally see Cohen in one of Freddy's outrageous Lycra/Spandex outfits. He can probably do a pretty good job imitating Freddy's voice also

Analogman
pathetic Next thing you'll tell me is Paul Rodgers is fronting Queen now - oh wait.. .
Sir Stewart
I read somewhere that this movie follows Queen's whole career and Tom Berenger is playing Paul Rodgers. it's actually the story of Brian May, who will be played by Ann B. Davis.
Analogman
That's funny stuff right there.
Lammycat
The guy who plays Borat can obviously act (as he is a good con man) but I think Julia Roberts would have been a better choice.
dannygutters
Cohen previously dressed up as borat dressing up as Freddie in yellow spandex at the MTV Awards Europe last year or sometime, I saw it on youtube a while ago..

evil horn
if I go back and read this thread with my eyes closed can I erase the reminder that paul rodgers sings for queen? I think cohen will do a good job.
Guest tandylacker
Seems like they should have searched for a no name actor that looks and sounds like Freddy Mercury rather than getting Borat. Its akward seeing someone you are familiar with playing someone you are familiar with. But hey, if the movie ends up as shitty as Ray or Walk the Line, then I'm sure people will love it. Atticus
pathetic Next thing you'll tell me is Paul Rodgers is fronting Queen now - oh wait.. . I think that may be my favorite post of the week. For many reasons.
yankhotelfox
High-five. It's gonna be nice. This film will NOT....suck.

Somnambulist
Cohen was supposed to play Curly Oxide in the film Vic Thrill and Curly Oxide. It was supposed to be written by Tina Fey based on the true story of a hasidic jew, Curly Oxide, that became a collaborator with Vic Thrill, a Brooklyn front man for a rock band. (Different story than Matisyahu.) I haven't heard anything recent on this. I'm sure both Fey and Cohen are pretty busy with other projects now. Vic Thrill, who is still performing, is the alter ego of Bill Campion, former lead singer of The Bogmen.

I forget the episode number but you can probably search curly Oxide on www.thislife.org. Last I heard he went back to the hasidic life. Cohen is a good character actor tho, so I figure he can pull of mercury pretty well without making you think of borat.
suites
I read that this is not true....he is not doing the movie
