OOO
I wish I was a neutron bomb for once I could go off I wish I was a sacrifice but somehow still lived on I wish I was a sentimental ornament you hung on... The Christmas treeI wish I was the star that went on top I wish I was the evidence I wish I was the grounds For 50 million hands upraised and open toward the sky I wish I was a sailor with someone who waited for me I wish I was as fortunate as fortunate as me I wish I was a messenger and all the news was good I wish I was the full moon shining off a Camaro's hood I wish I was an alien at home behind the sun I wish I was the souvenir you kept your house key on I wish I was the pedal brake that you depended on I wish I was the verb 'to trust' and never let you down I wish I was a radio song, the one that you turned up
cryptique
So, the original poster is yet another person who doesn't like the "direction" the band is heading. Bands change. Get used to it. I didn't like the direction R.E.M. went after Lifes Rich Pageant. You know what I did? I just didn't listen to their new stuff much. Did I bitch about it? OK, honestly, a little, yeah. But the world didn't end, and it really didn't affect my life, and R.E.M. continued on and put out a lot more records, and they still do. Some of them have been good, and some of them have been not so good. It doesn't really matter to me. I'll check in with them when they put out good stuff, and ignore them when they don't. Otherwise, it just doesn't affect me. As for Wilco, I think this album was the logical next step. Is it perfect? No. I do wish it had a bit more muscle to it, and there's a song or two that I'm not crazy about. But overall, I love the album, and I love the way this lineup sounds. That's my opinion. Your opinion is different. Cool, that's your right. Just be sure to state it as an opinion, though, and not as if it were an incontrovertible fact. When you act like you're the final arbiter of Wilco quality, you deserve whatever flak comes your way.

And to answer your question, it was very much implied. Examples: I think we need to draft a petition to get Jay Bennett back in Wilco. It's that simple. It's that obvious.Let's put it this way: the new album sucks. I've never heard Tweedy be so dull and straight forward with his lyrics. Impossible Germany is the only decent song on the album. ponch1028
i love all the different reactions to the original post - all the serious, sincere, and absurd posts. i love Pearl Jam's songi completely agree with the R.E.M. comparisons (although I still purchase every one of their albums because they've earned my respect and $15) and I'm married so whether or not Megan Wallace is on this board makes no difference to me (i just would have liked to have known whether or not she was down with me also)

And to answer your question, it was very much implied. Examples: Oh, come on. I hate it as much as the next VCer when someone says, 'This sucks,' instead of 'I think this sucks,' but can't we just assume that people are too lazy to phrase everything in terms of their perspectives and tack it on ourselves? For something as relatively trite as the new Wilco album, we really shouldn't feel too threatened when someone phrases their opinion as fact; that kind of back-and-forthing gets old. Or should I say, I THINK that kind of back-and-forthing gets old?

I'm merely pointing out that it works better to say "I hate it" rather than "it sucks." One sounds like an honest opinion; the other sounds like the rantings of a spoiled child. I won't bother to discuss what starting a thread such as this sounds like.
quarter23cd
As long as we're having this argument, can I turn back the clock a few years and rant about how wussy I thought Summerteeth was when it came out? I wasn't a member of the board back then and totally missed out on that. I think every Wilco record so far has been somebody's undeniable proof that the universe is going to hell in a handbasket. Mrs. Peel
I don't feel threatened at all. It doesn't bother me in the slightest that lots of people don't like this new album. I'm merely pointing out that it works better to say "I hate it" rather than "it sucks." One sounds like an honest opinion; the other sounds like the rantings of a spoiled child. I won't bother to discuss what starting a thread such as this sounds like. I 100% agree with this. Stating your opinion is a lot different than stating something as fact. I can't stand it when people talk about what they think of music as if it's scientific fact. It's subjective, and everyone hears it differently. But I don't like to be told, in essence, that I'm wrong if I like something you don't. Also, I think it should be obvious to most that since you are posting a negative Wilco review on a Wilco message board, the majority of people who respond to it are going to disagree with you. Maybe if you hadn't stated everything the way you did and actually backed up your opinions with reasons, they may not have reacted as strong. And just for the record, I'm not spinning SBS too much, but only because right now I'm really into music with more punch. I think the lyrics are great and the music is great, just not my thing right now. If there is something that can be stated as fact, it's that Wilco has been constantly evolving, with band members as well as musical style. With the differences they've shown from album to album, it doesn't surprise me at all that not everyone will like the new one because it's a departure from AGIB. But AGIB was a departure from YHF. And YHF was a departure from ST. And so on and so on. I may not be into SBS right now, but I'm so proud of those guys for following the path they want to follow, because if they did the opposite and kept making YHF over and over again someone else would be here posting about how stale they've gotten. Like I said, people say 'This album sucks' simply because they forgot to/didn't feel like/don't care if there's a difference between that and 'I hate this.' Is it *really* that hard to assume that they know this is their own opinion, and actually discuss the merits of why it sucks (or not, as the case may be)? I'm just saying that I'm tired of people responding to 'This sucks' with 'That's not a fact, that's an opinion!' rather than a counter of 'I don't think so because [reasons].' No, I don't think people forgot to add it, instead they didn't feel like/don't care if there's a difference, and that's what bugs me.

You are a troll, and unfortunately, we are feeding you. Sky Blue Sky is awful. But it's also great. And I like it. But I hate it. And it leaves me feelinghappy inside.
