be my demon
I'm real sad Wilco's music is now going to be associated with a car commercial. I don't think anything tops my friend's dad referring to Led Zeppelin's "Rock and Roll" as "The Cadillac Song."
tongue-tied
i bet jeff's having a right old laugh reading these threads and then he pauses for moment and realizes that he entertains himself by reading a message board about his band, and more often than not, his life. then i imagine he crawls into a hot shower without even taking his clothes off. phish907
Could you please describe what a "true fan" looks and sounds like so I can be sure and comply? I've been a huge fan of the band from the very beginning, going back to the Uncle Tupelo days
phish907
lolzSorry to be able to afford some of the finer things in life. I am a grown man adult with a good job and a college education. Does this make me any less credible that I don't have to fish pennies out of a jar to afford things. Just what I would expect from a RED SOXfan....If you don't love America then get the hell out......If you aren't with us then you're against us...Is it wrong that I laughed at the screen name of this poster and said to myself..."ah, that makes sense"? Yes, it is wrong. I take it back...I take it all back. (turning off the TV now)Just as I would snarl at some of the choices in your cd collection

I was actually having more of a laugh at the perceived fan boyism of "OMG GONNA TRADE IN MY BMW FOR VW NOW CAUSE THEY GOT TEH WILCO!" Yeah ok buddy. However, you are a "grown man adult" and I'm just a RED SOXfan, what do I know.
kaytertot
What saddens me the most about this commercial ordeal is it's negative effect on some of their fans, or more specifically a lot of you who've made posts saying a lot of.. things. Some of you people's reactions are just a little ridiculous, not that you aren't allowed to have your opinions.. I'm just stating mine. And I'm not putting down everyone that isn't fond of the commercials, just most of the name-calling and crap. I don't think any less of Wilco for making a few bucks off featuring their songs in a commercial or letting Starbucks sell their new album (the latter could also be said of the White Stripes, who I'm also a big fan of). I've seen a couple people start threads on an Elliott Smith board I frequent wondering who did the music in all these new VW commercials, and many of these people end up going out, getting themselves a copy of the album, and falling in love with it. Thanatos
I really enjoyed those VW commercials from a year ago or so. The ones that showed a group of friends happily driving in a VW and chatting away, when suddenly........WHAMMO!!!!...a truck plows right into the side of the unsuspecting VW! Screen goes black for a second or two until we see, to our great relief, that everyone is fine (the airbags saved them!) and being tended to by paramedics. Then, one of the VW's occupants, clearly in shock but grateful for the safety features of the VW, exclaims, "HOLY SH--...!"). The words, "Safe Happens." then come up on screen to close the commercial.I'd be hard-pressed to think of another commercial that has used fear so effectively to hawk a product! Instead of "Safe Happens", they could have easily opted for "Buy a Volkswagen or you will f--king DIE!!!!"

Thanatos
People who don't enjoy the commercials simply turn the TV off. They are not your songs they belong to Jeff and the boys. It was his decision and his music so if you are close minded enough to hate Wilco over this, you were not a "true" fan anyhow. Things I do not like I simply do not allow to take up any of my time. Wilco is not indie rock they do not have anything to prove to all you wannabe hipsters who think everythig they adore is sacred and exempt from the public. I first didn't know what to think, although I finally decided Jeff would never compromise his music just for a few bucks. If Starbucks and VW help get the word out them so be it. One thing I know for sure, all these so called indie or hip radio stations would not touch Wilco with a 10 ft. pole. It is the same shit over and over. I am so sick of so called cool people like Bjork, or Thurston Moore I could puke. While I certainly do not like every song Wilco makes, in fact there is usually a stinker on every cd, they are still the best band around and any fan who bitches about Wilco needs to get a life. These guys are so fan friendly it is unreal. Just thank about all the Free music and bonus tracks they have given us in the past year, let alone webcasts etc. So my words are shut the fuck up you are not Jeff, you do not influence his thinking and if you dont like the direction of the band go back and find another band until they upset you with trying to actually get the music out there so people outside of top 40 radio can hear it. I find it fascinating that the majority of mud-slinging, name-calling, personal attacks, etc. regarding this issue seem to come from veteran posters who proclaim themselves "true fans". Just because someone may not agree with Wilco's choice to endorse VW, it doesn't mean they're any less of a fan than those who agree with/are indifferent to the ads. I realize this is a so-called "community", and that many of you have been posting here for years...but do you honestly think your opinion is more valid or carries more weight than a newcomer? I've been a fan since the Tupelo days and I've gladly spent considerable time & money on Wilco over the years. I've turned countless people onto their music and vigorously defended their stylistic evolution and line-up changes without hesitation. Does the fact that I disagree with their decision to sell VW's mean that I love their music any less than anyone else on this board? Does having a contrarian opinion to someone with 10,000+ posts exclude me from membership on this message board? Short of Wilco dedicating an album to Bush/Cheney or Jeff strangling live puppies on stage, is it ever acceptable to disagree with something the band does without being instructed to "fuck off", "get a life", or "clear the sand out of your vagina" (one of my faves from another related thread)? If not, then maybe the name of this forum should be changed from "Via Chicago" to something along the lines of "Happy Fun-Time Wilcoteer Circle-Jerk Squad"...or maybe just "Will Comply" would suffice. droe77
I've been thinking about them for a while, and personally, the commercials don't bother me at all. Here's my rationale... phish907
MY OFFICAL APOLOGY TO THE COMMUNITY I have been posting here and a part of Via Chicago for a long time. I shouldn't have gotten so out of line with my posts. I do realize this is a community board with all of us sharing one common interest here WILCO, the greatest rock band around. My posts were out of line and I do apologize for anyone who I may have offended with them. After all we are talking about a commercial here. With all the issues and problems in the world today, this little subject just does not ad up. I hope to have stronger communication with all involved in the future. Sincerely, my words are for real. Everyone has an opinion and it is their right to let it be known. I travel to many Wilco shows around the country and I have had excellent experiences with VC members in the past. I am looking forward to the same in the future. Happy 4th everyone.

Sorry if I called you out too harshly...if so, it was mostly out of a collective frustration caused by several other posts (not just yours). If there is a common theme to all the debate over this issue, it is that we all feel a passionate connection to Wilco and their music. Unfortunately, that passion can sometimes get the better of our emotions, and that's when the gloves come off! I certainly agree that there are more important issues/problems in the world today. Anyway, no hard feelings and enjoy the holiday! If you're ever in Chicago and our paths cross, first round is on me!

owhatevernevermind
I love the thing where people say, if you don't like the commercials, you don't have to see them, like we should dive under the couch when the commercials come on. Any information which in any way is displeasing should be ignored. Sleep peacefully America, and don't let the facts disquiet your nightmares.

Atticus
By waking up? waking up would certainly end the nightmare. but if one is sleeping quietly, would one be having nightmares? Webster's defines "disquiet" as "to take away the peace or tranquillity of" My nightmares don't typically involve peace and/or tranquility. So again, I'm stuck on how one could take away the peace or tranquility of (disquiet) a nightmare?
