Hey, I Just Bumped Into...

Recommended Posts

I purposefully put off reading this until I had enough time to read it at once -- great stuff!

I met Scotty Pippen in an elevator in my office building. We were in it long enough for me to mention that my mother and nephew had also run into him coincidentally the day before, and that my nephew told Scotty that he wanted Jason Caffey's autograph instead of his. He gave a laugh, shook his head like "man, you white folks are crazy" and then I got off the elevator.

I sat on the stairs of Second City with Jim Belushi after the show was over for more than an hour. John was still alive and we spoke at length about his drug use. I think he would have asked me out but I told him I had a boyfriend. Dumb dumb.

The Beatles were going to stay at our house when I was 4 and they came to town to play the stadium. Ringo would have gotten my room :lol

A couple semi-famous people went to my high school. Virginia Madsen (who was known as Gina in those days) was a couple years younger than I. I did not care for her. Laurie Dann was a vague aquaintance of my sister's -- she went on to shoot up a grammar school here locally -- killing a 5 year old and then killing herself. Very ugly situation.

There are many others that I cannot recall now.... Oh I waited on James Brown once.

Great fun. Thanks for that Ray Bradbury image, Mr. K. :brow :lol

When I was 12-ish, I ate pancakes with the Mayor of Cleveland. I was wearing a maternity dress and a wig. True story, as they say.

Attorney General Ramsey Clark slept in my bed. I wasn't in it at the time.

Hung out with Dudley Moore at Cedars Sinai MC many times when my uncle was in the hospital there.

Met Jimmy Carter.

Met actor Daniel Stern on the street in NYC -- he seemed thrilled that we recognized him and hung around to talk for a bit.

Actress Greta Scaatchi (?) asked me to watch her toddler on the Amtrak to NYC so she could go to the bar car. Weird. Cute baby, though.

Seems like there must be others, but they're eluding me.

Sarah -- didn't you meet Kiefer recently? How could you forget that?

I've enjoyed reading this thread, but didn't have anything to add until last night. Patti Smith and her band came into the store where I work and bought some books. Patti and Lenny Kaye were both polite, but a little aloof. Jay Dee Daugherty was super friendly. He bought a bunch of books, commenting on how great the prices were. Then he saw a book on houseboats and got really excited, flipping through the pictures and saying how he would just get depressed if he bought it because he couldn't afford one that nice. I wouldn't have known he was with the band, but Lenny Kaye was waiting for him outside. After I put all his books in a bag he walked out and I heard him say something to Kaye about the great book on houseboats. A couple minutes later a fourth guy comes in and says his friend told him we had a book on houseboats. :pirate

i too waited until i had time to read through the whole thread before adding my stories. that's been some good reading!

here goes: my favorite, when i was 7, my family was on a flight from germany to NY and Gordon from Sesame Street was sitting diagonally behind me. that was amazing for a 7 year old. i met henry winkler that same year.

adulthood...i worked at NASA HQ in the design office, we made all the awards for the agency and one day Tom Cruise's name pops up on an award. inside sources told us he was coming by that afternoon. there's only one way in and out of the building. myself and a couple of coworkers found out when he arrived and waited by the door until he left. he was very nice, shook hands with everyone and signed autographs, and smiled at me, asked me my name.

also at NASA i bumped into John Glenn, Buzz Aldrin, and Neil Armstrong at different times.

on my way into a restaurant, during the 2000 election debacle, i passed naomi cambell and then ended up being seated at a table next to Greenspan.

was running late for work one day, turned the corner to enter the building i worked in and almost knocked over Linda Cheney (and a secret service agent).

was at a patty griffin concert at the Ryman, walking around, and a guy turns around from getting drinks and almost knocks me over. my friend pointed out to me that it was Brad Paisley, i asked her who that was.

was having lunch at the cafe in the museum i worked at in nashville one day and saw a guy walking up to the building, one of my colleagues commented that the person looked just like Ben Folds, then we realized it was Ben Folds. he did a self-portrait drawing in the museum's interactive artspace during his visit that day.

Steve Gorman, the drummer for the black crowes, came to my nashville going away party.

i was walking down the street in Georgetown and noticed Mia Hamm was on the opposite side of the street.

i got to play soccer against Jen Grubb (defender for the Washington Freedom), she was on my friend's co-ed team in a DC rec league (just after the women's soccer league folded).

i was a finalist to introduce Al Gore for something, but got beat out by someone else, met him a year later at a bookstore in Nashville.

met Chuck Close and Nan Goldin.

when i was 14 i saw Poison in concert front row. at the end of the show, Ricki Rocket tossed me a drum stick and the girl next to me grabbed it from me, Brett Michaels walked up to me and handed me a t-shirt. i never wore it (until 16 years later when i did the whole headbanginheavymetal summer concert venture).

that's all i can remember for now (not counting book signings and hanging out by tour buses waiting to meet bands).

steve's brother dave was my 7th grade teacher. he had some good stories and pictures to share.

when i was about 8 years old i was the biggest peyton manning fan in tennessee. that was when peyton was playing at his best at UT, and when everyone in tennessee officially claimed him to be a saint. (pun intended?) but my mother and i went to krogers one night right down the street, and he was standing right there in the middle of the soup aisle. of course, we were both too afraid to talk to him. but hey, it was the greatest moment of my life when i was 8.

i met el-tweedo the night before i had my gallbladder out. so i went into the operating room still smiling like a jackass.

i know i have more, but i can't remember.

to be continued...

I was at Sunset Junction last night, and I swear I was standing right next to Meg White at a small bar.

i ran into Shaq in hong kong

A good friend of ours was at the pediatrician's office with her 6 mo old daughter about 5 1/2 years ago, waiting for the doctor to come in when a very large african-american gentleman walked in, also looking for the doctor. They exchanged pleasantries and he told her what a cute little girl she had, I've got one that age and another... etc. They said goodbye, the doctor came in and our friend says to him, "Wow! That guy was huge. He should play basketball or football or something."

"Uh... that was Shaquille O'Neil."

"Does he play football?"

Needless to say, SportsCenter isn't at the top of her viewing list.
