Why didn't I cancel my RS subscription

An open letter to Rolling Stone:

Dear RS,

I opened up my new rolling stone issue this weekend and flipped right to the review section. The 1st album you review is the new M.I.A. album. 4.5 stars? Are you f'ing kidding me? And in the 1st line they immediately compare it to a Kanye West album. Surprise! Hey RS, GET OFF OF KANYE'S JOCK!!! Side Note: Personally, I don't know why you rank Kanye's albums so high when half of the f'ing songs are skits! WTF?!? Skits that aren't even funny or socially relevant.

Then in the same magazine you gave the New Pornographers - Challengers only 3 stars. How does the new Smashing Pumpkins album (waste of time) get 4 stars and this masterpiece gets 3? You know what else you gave 3 stars to? R-Kelly's new album. Yes. The New Pornographers' album is on the same level as R-Kelly's new album. Oh, and you gave the Once OST 2 stars? Get your head out of your ass. Seriously.

Also, don't wait until someone who actually matters in music passes away before you put them on the cover of RS. Zac Efron. OMG,WTF,BBQ?!?!? Orlando Bloom? Heath Ledger? King Kong? Too bad it took James Brown and Hunter Thompson passing away to get them on your cover.

Pondering renewing,

Ben

You don't seem to like Rolling Stone very much. You shouldn't renew your subscription.

edit: This is Captain Obvious.

Fixed it for you. What, you can't remember to log back in under the appropriate name any more? :rolleyes

I prefer Filter as my magazine of choice for reviews and music articles.........

That's what I want, but they don't really have enough issues in a year for what you pay for.

I stopped reading/subscribing to RS sometime in the mid 90's. Around the time I discovered music magazines that were more relevant and eclectic in their content. RS is too mainstream and commercially driven to allow for coverage of important or overlooked artists in general. You're better off reading The Big Takeover, No Depression, Paste, Magnet, Harp; all of them are miles ahead of RS.

RS is a magazine about pop culture not just music. It has always been that way. There are a lot of people, I would say even a majority of the people in this country, would enjoy R. Kelly's new CD a lot more than the New Pornos cd (i think the new pornos cd is awesome but thats just me). Every once in a while someone complains about how shitty RS is. If you haven't noticed, its been pretty much the same magazine for at least the past 10 years. They have a lot of good stuff in there but they also have a lot of bullshit. Its a cheap magazine that comes out every two weeks. I'd say just enjoy it if you want to. This is not some indie publication, its the worlds most famous pop culture magazine, I'd say get used to it (or dont renew your subscription as there are tons of amazing publications out there).

I entirely agree with the first poster's thoughts. RS is a magazine that lives in the past today in order to make up for their complete ignorance they missed back then.

Rolling Stone Magazine has been pretty useless for years, but in general, I would still say that the tone of the review is way more important than the actual score they give in an album. The reason is, when Rolling Stone reviews albums, one writer writes the review, but their editors all vote on the score to be given to it. So you have their hip-hop writers chiming in on the rock album scores, the rock guys chiming in on electronica, etc. It's fucking stupid.

If you haven't noticed, a lot of people here remember what the magazine was like 30 or even 40 years ago. ;)

For sure. I am well aware of how important RS used to be and its influence and presence at the time (I dont personally remember) but that doesn't really have anything to do with what I was saying. I was just saying that RS featuring people like Zac Efron on the cover is nothing new.

It has everything to do with what you're saying. You said "Every once in a while someone complains about how shitty RS is. If you haven't noticed, its been pretty much the same magazine for at least the past 10 years."

I'm saying that 30 years ago it wasn't nearly as shitty. Going back only 10 years misses the point completely.

America has already proven their musical incompetence by running American Idol for over 5 seasons. They should just call the show Pat Boone Idol. Lame ass covers. Sorry... don't know why i'm so bitter today...

They seem so proud of their beginnings and history. There's proof in this because they release an anniversary edition every 6 months practically. Why don't they reflect their origins today? (rhetorical)

Who cares? (About RS cultural significance, that is)

If you don't like it, don't read it. I have a subscription, and I like that they generally have some pretty interesting interviews and articles, and if I disagree with their reviews, who cares? It's one person's opinion against anothers. If people wanted to hear about Wilco instead of Kanye West, you can be damn sure they'd run an issue with Jeff wearing a crown of thorns. Unfortunately, most people don't care about "good" music, so they aren't going to waste their time running articles that people won't read.
