WaronWar
You forgot the most important hit of them all from the summer of love: Heroin by The Velvet Underground
Hodie
I think they both hit the big time in 1968, but that era for me has to include Sly and the Family Stone (Dance to the Music, Higher) and also Al Green. What a fun musical assignment for you! Edit: I guess you have to take Mr. Green off the list. Though he put out a couple of albums in 1967 and 1968, the first one to get any mainstream airplay wasn't until 1970. And I am now certainly going to have "Tired of Being Alone" in my head all day, for which I thank you very much.

Whitty
Yep- your parents need Pink Floyd's "Interstellar Overdrive", the Velvet Underground's "Venus In Furs", John Coltrane's Interstellar Space album, and some second set Grateful Dead mind-assault involving some combination of "Alligator", "The Other One", "Dark Star", drums and feedback. Add a whole pile of drugs and a liquid light. Freak out.
