this was a great festival set! i was SO excited they played casino queen. i always love dancing to that one. they played a lot of older stuff and that made me very happy, not that i don't love sbs though!

i walked around in the crowd a lot during the set, trying to find my "perfect spot" to stand and i encountered a lot of boring people. no singing or dancing or anything. it was a very odd sight for me...austin loves wilco.

oh yeah, did anyone else see justin long (the mac guy) watching the show from the side of the stage? i think jake gyllenhaal was there as well.

the last 15 minutes of this set made my weekend. absolutely awesome, i really never thought i'd be at a wilco concert when they played red eyed & blue and got you (at the end of the century). i was so happy. wilco absolutely rocked. i was about to write them off during the middle of their set as they were playing the same ole same ole i've always heard. but then comes via chicago (which i've never been lucky enough to hear live), then too far apart, and then that last 15 minutes. and unlike some people here, i loved hearing i'm the man who loves you... still my favorite wilco song, so i'm glad they play it alot. i still haven't heard spiders live, so i wish they could have replaced a couple songs with that, but whatever. wilco was the best thing at acl that i saw. i can't believe i almost considered seeing my morning jacket over wilco... i would have been so pissed when i read this setlist the next day.

Overall, how'd the festival rate? Weather, performances, crowd? I'd been to 4 of the first 5 and was thinking about it on Saturday at 11:30 when we were struggling to get the Sunday paper out. What I recall about the two Wilco sets I saw at the fest was in 2002 just thinking to myself "what a cool place to be," and in 2004 that gorgeous sunset.

Festival was awesome.

Wilco started "slow" but slowly but surely they caught fire...ITHMYLY to the end rocked.

Gotan Project stole the show on Friday.

Arctic Monkeys and Muse rocked our faces off on Sat.

Didn't get to MMJ but Wilco was a blast. Preservation Hall Jazz Band was a lot of fun. Dylan--well---his band was great---but...I will reserve comment on his singing voice. (I LOVE Dylan but that was painful)

Weather -- hot but overall clear and sunny.

People -- hard to say. A mix of a lot of diiferent types but overall everyone was very respectful and into the music--for the most part.

Red Eyed Blue->I got You

Casino Queen

It was my first time at ACL and I'm really glad I went. Weather was scorching hot but I loved the performances. My favorites other than Wilco: The National (both at Emo's and the festival); Spoon (both at La Zona Rosa and the festival); Peter Bjorn and John; Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Andrew Bird and Dr. Dog. Oh, and I have a soft spot in my heart for Kelly Willis.

Here are some videos I shot:

Spoon - The Underdog - La Zona Rosa

Wilco - Impossible Germany - Part 1

Wilco - Impossible Germany - Part 2

Wilco - Impossible Germany - Part 3

Side note: We already knew that The National admire Wilco. Now I can attest that the feeling is mutual. When I went to see The National and Blonde Redhead on Saturday night at Emo's, I spotted Nels, John and Pat. Then Sunday I saw one of The National's guitarists on the side of the ACL stage for Wilco's performance.

The sun was setting into our faces as Tweedy & Co performed a great set. Having been to the taping yesterday, the setlist was quite similar with a few extra gems. The difference in sound really made me appreciate Sat afternoon.

Lucinda came on before our heroes and was suprisingly good. Very Tight!!!!

Ben Kweller even got a little bluesy with a fantastic guitar solo!!! go Ben!!!

Well, it's off to the airport......then work............then finally, home.

it was hot as fuck, but for the most part the festival was very entertaining.

first day: i started with pete yorn. he was a decent act, covered a peter bjorn and john song (young folks), which was odd because they played immediately after him. i then went to peter bjorn and john who sounded good but the first half of their set was filled with their slow songs. they didn't start to pick it up until i was already leaving walking over to catch the last part of blonde redhead. I then watched joss stone from underneath a tree, and i was really impressed her. she sounded really good, and the crowd really liked her. M.I.A. was next, and as I expected, she sounded awful. she's just not a very good live singer. She was crazy as always, jumping around and dancing on the stage, but it didn't bode too well for the outdoor atmosphere. i'd like to see her in an enclosed club that could fit maybe 500 people in it... she might be pretty good in that environment. she opened with bamboo banga, and only the opening beat resembled anything of the actual song. the rest was just cluttered sound, it's a much better on the album. she then breezed though a little sampling of XR2, then started pull up the people. it was her, a dancer girl, and a MC in the background spinning discs. it was impossible to understand anything she was saying, so i left and went to LCD soundsystem. they sounded badass, and even though i was lightyears away from the stage i could hear everything perfectly. i wish i would have caught their entire set. spoon was after that and i thought they sounded awesome, best sounding band of the day in my opinion. they rocked a lot of their newer tunes but through in some oldies for good measure. the last act was bjork... she sounded good but the first part of her set was littered with slow songs. i really can't understand why people come out and play those slow songs at huge festivals. i left halfway through... apparently her last two songs of the night were human behavior and another song off her first album.

second day: got there early for dr. dog. they sounded really good, and were impressively loud. i watched half their set then went to watch sound team who i was also very impressed with. they were wearing jump suits or something so I don't know how they didn't die in the heat. they played some awesome jams. i then caught this band called back door slam. it's a bunch of teenagers or 20 year olds. this band was awesome. the lead singer can absolutely wail on guitar and he's got this deep voice. they most resembled stevie ray vaughan. look them up on youtube, there are some impressive videos. i then went to see paolo nutini because augustina didn't interest me at all, and paolo ended up being the standout artist for me of the festival. i wasn't expecting him to be nearly as good as he was. he absolutely owned the crowd... especially with his new songs. cold war kids were after that and i could stand them for maybe 10 minutes and i left. not impressed at all, i just wasn't in to their kind of music. i think they've been way over hyped. if they were really the replacements for amy winehouse... well that's just depressing. i then watched blue october instead of stephen marley (because i didn't want to walk all the way to the other stage in the heat), and this was perhaps the worst hour of the festival. talk about a shit numetal emo band. this douchebag of a lead singer comes out with a tear drop tattoo singing all these lyrics about killing people with knifes, cutting himself, torching himself, etc. etc. just a bunch of emo bullshit. i hated every song they played. it was like linkin park was there trying to entertain the crowd. after that i watched andrew bird from a distance, so i can't really comment on his performance because i couldn't hear it that well. however, he did completely piss me off as he ran 5 or 6 minutes long... so the arctic monkeys were delayed and that probably cost us at least 1 song. so andrew, fuck you. he had completely finished a song at 6:29 and then for some unknown reason he starts a new one and lasts until 6:35. the monkeys came out and never let up for most of an hour. their drummer is really entertaining, guy really gets into it. the lead singer, who looks like he is 15 with pimples all over his face, isn't very impressive for such a hyped band. he mostly likes to stand in one central location and sing while looking with his eyes to the left and right. he doesn't converse with the audience much, he doesn't move very much, and it almost seems like he doesn't want to be at the show, but he's just doing it because his mommy is making him or something. the last band i saw was arcade fire... they sounded a bit weird in the festival atmosphere. i was a long way away from the stage, so it was difficult to tell what was going on up stage. they did some crazy effects thing where they posted huge pictures of the band members playing their instruments in the background... but it was all in red so it looked like demons were behind them. i've seen this band before, and they were much better the first time i saw them. i think they are simply a band that should be seen in a setting where the acoustics can be controlled. i probably should have went to see muse as that's all i heard about the next day was how great muse was, but by that time i was so tired that i just left 40 minutes into the set and went home.

third day: got there first to see the national... they had a huge crowd and they sounded awesome. they might have been the loudest band i saw at acl... i was 2 football fields away and they were hurting my ear drums. i don't know how anyone next to the stage survived without getting hearing damage. they definitely put on a good show. as I was staking out a spot on the amd stage to see wilco later that day, i sat through robert earl keen next and i was decently impressed with his performance. he just seems like a nice happy santa claus out there with that big white beard and cowboy hat. i have one of his albums, so i only recognized a couple songs he played, but the crowd seemed to really enjoy him. he had some guest banjo player who had a fetish for solos, and about 3 different songs busted out into a guitar solo, then a steel guitar solo, and then a banjo solo. everyone in the crowd was yeehawing and shit. i nexted walked over to the dell stage to check out common for a few minutes... i've never been a huge fan of rap live. it always sounds so shitty. common at least had a real backing band, so it wasn't too bad, but i think he tends to try to pump up the crowd too much with the "can i get a hell yea" or "say yea! say hell yeah! say yea! say hell yeah!" it gets annoying after awhile. after common came bloc party... it was really light and day between their good songs and their bad songs. almost without exception you could tell easily when a song was from their first album (awesome) or from their new album (terrible). they were brilliant with the old stuff, but the new material blows. hopefully their 3rd album will be good again. after that i ran to the wilco stage so i could get as close as possible. i was near the center about 20 feet from stage. i've already reviewed wilco above... lets just say they made the festival for me. after wilco came the decemberists. they had a huge crowd, so it was impossible to get near the stage. from far away they sounded like shit. i could barely make out any of the instruments, but colin's voice rang loud and clear. they needed to turn up the guitars, the bass, the drums, and turn down meloy's voice... but i'm not sure if the ever did that. i got sick of just listening to him sing, so i went to camp out for bob dylan. dylan was the biggest disappointment of the festival. his voice is so completely shot that it is truly unbearable. he sounded like he has a terminal case of throat cancer. i absolutely love him, but that appearance was just sad. everyone around me was making fun of his voice. it's truly remarkable he can sound so good on modern times, but sound so completely horrendous live. i left after 4 songs... i couldnt' bare to watch it. he wouldn't allow professional photographers near the stage, and the only camera allowed to be on him was the one from the sound booth. it simply showed a wide view angle of the stage. dylan stood in shadows the entire time, perhaps because he knows he sounds bad and he's embarrassed to be taking people's money? i'm almost positive anyone in the audience could have got up there and sang better than him.

cliffs: it was fucking hot, but worth going to. still pissed the stripes cancelled... seeing them would have made the festival twice as good.

I have a massive sunburn and 3 hours of sleep but the weekend was well worth it. Began with Wilco in Dallas on Friday. Drove down to Austin Saturday morning, had a few beers with some friends, went to Matt's El Rancho for a early dinner (my personal favorite Mexican place in Austin), and headed downtown to see The National at Emo's w/ Blond Redhead. Pat, Nels and John were in attendance at that show, I stood next to Pat for a little bit before The National came on. They played an amazing set, really the highlight of the weekend behind "Just That Simple" in Dallas. Matt Beringer puts so much into his vocals, he just meditates on every word, you can see how emotionally drained he is by the end of the set. Sunday we woke up early and saw The National again at ACL, another great performance. We caught the last bit of Ben Kweller and headed over to watch Common's set, which was the biggest surprise of the weekend and really fun. Walked over and watched all of Bloc Party's set, which was fine but fairly unexciting. Headed over to Wilco and it was just wonderful as everyones been saying, but it was nothing compared to standing 5 feet infront of Nels in Dallas. We opted to go ahead and drive back to Dallas since there was flights to catch and classes to attend in the morning. Great weekend, I need a nap now.

Great show! Nice to be able to get really close and enjoy the rockin'.

Thanks for posting up those sweet pics :)

Anyone know what the setlist on Wilco Base is so wrong? http://wilcobase.com/event.php?event_key=1075

They don't even have the correct date! I'm new to both this site and Wilco Base, so not sure if the base is known for being wrong.

Loved hearing multiple songs from AM, I'd have never thought that was going to happen! Maybe I should have taken the cowboy hat as a sign ;)

Andrew Bird delaying the Arctic Monkeys is a good thing, not a bad thing.

it's truly remarkable (Dylan) can sound so good on modern times, but sound so completely horrendous live.

No joke. Amazing studio work to make him sound better, perhaps? His live performances make me sad. I told myself I would stay at least 3 songs but I didn't even get that far.

i DO dig ben kweller! i had to miss his set, which broke my little heart, but someone ripped the audio off the webcast for me so i can at least hear the new songs. i can't wait for his new album!
