ZenLunatic
Anybody else a huge fan? A close competition between Wilco and Van Morrison for my favorite band. I have tons of bootlegs and most of his studio albums. Trying to get all his studio albums but most of them are out of print, so not as easy. Van has more soul than any musician ever. GtrPlyr
I'm a fan of Van's, particularly the first 5 or 6 records. Some really wonderful stuff there. p.s. I'd say Otis, Marvin, Curtis, Mavis and Aretha are pretty soulful too... and that's just for starters .

He's still making albums and touring, what a legend. Like Dylan. I made that soul statement to get a reaction from people, but for a white man, he's pretty black. Guest Left Arm Tan
i don't dislike van morrison, but not a big fan. he's got some really great stuff for sure, but i've always found him to be annoying.

ponch1028
Ever since I got Moondance from BMG music club back in high school, he has been consistently one of my top 5 artists of all-time. I have close to two dozen of his shows spread out mostly throughout the 70's but also some from the last 15 years. love me some van.
Mr. Heartbreak
I just discovered Astral Weeks last year, and I really like it ... especially the first few tracks.

boywiththorninside
You read my mind. After seeing the recent Kinks thread, I thought Van Morrison was deserving of a similar one. Based on his body of work, I think he's kind of underrated and that he doesn't get spoken of enough. Anyway, yes, I like him. All the big ones - Moondance, Astral Weeks, Tupelo Honey - are great. I'd like to chose something more obscure, but my two favorite songs of his are probably "Crazy Love" and "Sweet Thing." In terms of my appreciation of him, it also doesn't hurt that he's Irish. PigSooie
Big fan of "Moondance."
ZenLunatic
Some real favs of mine are Hard Nose the Highway, Beautiful Vision, Back on Top, St. Dominick's Review, Down The Road, hmmm..... I could go on. IT'S TOO LATE TO STOP NOW was proclaimed one of the best live cd ever made. I like Moondance alot but it seems to be the one that always gets associated with Van Morrison but he has sooo much more. Like 30 plus more incredible albums spanning 40 years. Definitely an underrated artist. To me, he is in the league of legends with Dylan and The Beatles.
ZenLunatic
Van the man! YES! Van at the top of his game. Young and strong. Check this out too... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BZpt0H8gNoM His singing isnt like that anymore, but he's still got alot more than most. He's so old now.
moxiebean
I've always liked "Hymns to the Silence".
LouieB
Underrated? By whom?? The last thing in the world I would call Van Morrison is under rated. He has put out records since the mid-60s and has never NOT had a record contract. He is not exactly a cult artist. And if anything his record companies have let him put out anything he feels like for years. LouieB

Van derserves more credit than he's got for the career he put together. Just because he has a long career doesnt mean he gets the credit that he deserves.
JerseyMike
Van the Man indeed! One of my favorite artists of all-time. Has anybody heard his last disc, Pay The Devil? Its a great country record, covering some Hank Williams and a bunch of other stuff. Plus, I'm a sucker for pedal steel and fiddle.

Seems Van wasn't too happy with that particular company... Van has been in heavy rotation for me for nearly 20 years.

Just because he has a long career doesnt mean he gets the credit that he deserves. I agree with this. I think too many people reduce Van to "Brown-Eyed Girl" and "Moondance." As you've pointed out, there is so much more to him than that. He has, I'll say it again, a huge body of work - much of which is often overlooked. If not underrated, I think he's generally underappreciated.
TheMaker
I'm of the opinion that everything from Astral Weeks to Veedon Fleece comprises the single greatest run of albums the world has ever seen. It's just a staggeringly perfect body of work. Van is also my favourite rock/white singer of all time. He kinda lost the plot after his little break in the middle 1970s, but goldamn, everything before that is aces.

LouieB
St. Dominicks Preview is one of my all time favorite albums. The country album...well not so great but okay. (I found a vinyl copy at Pitchfork actually.) LouieB

The thing is, he wasn't done there. After A Period in Transition broke up the streak a bit, Wavelength, Into the Music, and Common One comprised another great run -- particularly Into the Music, which is one of my favorites of his. While he's had a few lackluster outings, I don't know that I've ever heard a bad Van Morrison album.
