PopTodd
...and The Specials' "Concrete Jungle" came on the radio. From the rearview mirror, I could see the two of them look at each other wide-eyed. Then, the older one spoke up: "Dad? What is this? Turn it up! This ROCKS!" They're 6 and 8.And yes, I am proud. For many reasons, but that made me smile a really big, goofy grin. quarter23cd
Nice! From time to time I catch my kids in the right mood and they have had similar, extremely cute/awesome reactions. Like my oldest daughter, back when she was barely old enough to talk, used to try like hell to sing along with Neko Case's "Set Out Running". More recently, I had my iPod on shuffle and Beck's "Where Its At" came on and I looked in the mirror and saw her trying to do The Robot in her carseat. She routinely asks for this in the car now. My middle daughter (2 1/2) seems to have a surprising affinity for John Coltrane and Otis Redding. And my youngest, of all things, at 8 months old appears to be a budding Deadhead, as Jerry seems to calm her when she gets really cranky. My wife is not pleased about the Deadhead thing. Then again, those kinds of moments only happen if you catch them in the right mood. The rest of the time when they're in the car you wind up putting on The Little Fucking Mermaid DVD for the 999th time!
yermom
My three year old rocks out to Pavement, sings along to "Spit on a Stranger." Just the other day, I had 13th Floor Elevators on and she was jamming along kicking her feet to the beat. Also, she loves teh Wilcos, of course! Passing on good musical taste is one of the funnest parts of being a parent. Who knows how she'll fell about this stuff in ten years, but for now I like to believe she's always going to believe that whatever Mom likes must be cool.
PopTodd
Yeah.Ain't it great? But, at least at my kids' ages, I'm seeing them develop their own tastes, too.My younger son has really gotten into Beethoven (which I never listen to) and traditional African music, which he is getting ME into! The older one is a rocker -- Kiss and Green Day and such. Not all of it is my thing, but it's fun to watch. And, they do like my band, of course!
poppydawn
My three-year-old digs Neko Case, too. I got my ipod shortly after she turned two, and I have an ongoing playlist of non-kid songs that she's liked. We've been building this playlist for nearly two years and she still loves it. It's got Neko, White Stripes, Wilco (here she is ), U2, The Clash, English Beat, stuff from Springsteen's "The Seeger Sessions", Arcade Fire ... I get such a kick out of seeing her respond to music, beyond the usual kid music dreck. We crank up Underground Garage on Sirius on a regular basis and dance around the house. I've gotta admit, I'm glad she's over Amy Winehouse. I spent last spring getting dirty looks whenever we were in public and she'd bust out singing "Rehab".
El Picador
My 6 year old was raised on Wilco and other great bands. He still appreciates them, but he loves to tune in to Metal Mania on VH1 Classic on Saturday nights.

My wife is not pleased about the Deadhead thing. Oh man you just reminded me of a funny (to me) story. All my kids were weaned on the GD of course. Once, my youngest and I were on a hour-long drive. She was 3-4 years old at the time. I have a '73 Playin' crankin on the stereo and about 10 minutes in it's getting VERY out there. I asked her "what do you think of this kid?" She replies "I like their songs, but I don't like it when they start to practice!" I don't think I've heard it put any better from any rock critic when it comes to the Dead. lamradio
I'll have to post my picture of my 4 year old completely mesmerized by Wilco on Austic City Limits.. I put it on for backround music while I was doing something in the kitchen, came into the living room and there he was.. He sat and watched 3 or 4 full songs.
EL the Famous
both kids dig 'rise above' by black flag and 'private idaho' by the b-52's.
Wilco Worshipper
My girls both love teh Wilco, of course. They even at times have requested to hear certain tunes. And today on the way to school, they both very proudly told me how they heard Wilco on the radio when they were with Daddy over the weekend. When it started to play they both looked at each other with recognition and glee Btw, I have to mention I am VERY surprised by the radio play, as I know their father and stepmother do not listen to ANY of the stations I normally listen to (and even mine barely, barely ever play Wilco). austrya
My soon to be 6 year olds loves Art Brut. He sings along to Emily Kane, My Little Brother, etc. He even was talking in his sleep one night and said "stay off the crack." He also likes The Beatles, and Supernova's "Chewbacca." My 10 year old likes The Beatles, Pavement, and LOVES Guided By Voices. My 21 month old likes "Be Gentle With Me" by Boy Least Likely To and "1234" by Feist.

Ryan, my 5 year old, likes to sing along to "Nobody Move, Nobody Get Hurt" by We Are Scientists...You know the line "if you want to use my body go for it." I think the song is on one of their video games.

RaspberryJam
I'm a bad mom. My 4 year old daughter is into "Back of the Bus" and "Booty Call" by G. Love and the Special Sauce. I'm just waiting for Child Protective Services to call. She was making my mom go throught the cds in the car and when my mom flipped through and say, "Wilco," Abbey said, "Oh, I like THEM." poppydawn
I had someonethreated to call me in for showing my kids Duck Soup (the old Marx Brothers movie)!Like a little anarchy is a bad thing... For Duck Soup? Someone needs to lighten the hell up. I'm purposefully raising my kid to question authority and rules. The only problem with this plan is my husband and I get to be the training ground for her budding anarchism. It just doesn't work to say, "You need to question what people tell you, Clara Jane. Except for me. Just do what I say." She used to go to a daycare at a Methodist church in a really conservative area. There were a few occasions when I pulled into the parking lot with my windows down, listening to my usual choices of music without thinking about it. And yet, I was always surprised by the somewhat-mortified looks I got from some of the other moms. I guess everyone's supposed to listen to nothing but The Wiggles once her cervix has dialated beyond a certain point.

As if being a stay at home mom isn't brain-numbing enough (don't get me wrong, I grateful to be able to be brain numbed). A friend of mine just took her kids to a Dan Zanes concert and acted like it was, you know, an actual concert. I believe she waved her cell in the air.
