Pick up the change

Recommended Posts

I LOVE THIS SONG.. and I Love Jeff's solo take on it as well.. The lyrics really speak to me.. brings back memories of the ex, and the lyrics are pretty close to how I felt.

favorite line

If its just Your heart

talkin

i'll listen everytime

dear you can talk my ear off

anytime, anytime

but if my mind starts wanderin

it wont be gone long

whenever i hear your heart talkin

its a song ,its a song

i love those lines...

anyone else love this song? :)

The version of "Pick Up the Change" from the 930 Club, Sept 26 2001 is one of my favorite live tracks of all time. Jeff's harmonica solo is great. Sorry I'm not geeky enough/tech savvy enough to post a link to the song--the show is widely available, and I am sure someone else can post it.

it's funny, ya know. you see the picture of Jeff and I in my sig? after the picture was taken, he leaned over to me and said: "Justin, I really regret making A.M....I really and truly do."...and I said to Jeff "it's okay man. i own every record, b-side and rarity that Wilco has put out, but don't feel bad, because I haven't wasted my money on A.M. yet and never plan to."

You hate a great album, are still making self-centered posts in the music forum more than two years after joining the site and really seem to enjoy projecting. Congratulations, I guess...?

Anyway, one of my greatest experiences seeing Wilco live was hearing this song at my first show back in '02. Glenn's metronomic drumming and the pared-down four-man lineup (Mike was just the laptop guy) at the time really brought out the best in the song.

Hey Justin it's your fellow RVAer, Greg here. I too would agree that Jeff's work on later Tupelo is better than AM. But I think AM was probably rushed for a multitude of reasons. A - self-imposed pressure of stacking up to Jay B- record label pressure to try and strike while the UT buzz was still really high and lastly to have an album to tour behind and support. All of that being said, and I know I'm in the minority here, I'll take it as a whole over SBS. Are you going to the 9:30 shows? Cheers, Greg

i understand it is your opinion and i respect it but how could you hate AM?? yes it is very different from most of all of the records, even Being There, but back in that time, 1994ish, that was a great album, not a superb opener, not a blow em record for a musician who's previous band broke up, not Trace, but man, that was a goodie, plenty of classics!

the guitar on I thought i held you is beautiful

dash 7 takes a while to get into, but once you do - you're trapped

casino queen, box full of letters, i must be high, passenger side and shouldnt be ashamed are perfect rockers

blue eyed soul, too far apart and dash 7 are dreamy

and we get the lone wilco tune from John..

1) fits the descriptions of songs on their later albums (apart from Its just that simple)

2) whats there not love about this album?

A.M. is chock full of my favorite songs even though it's not close to being my favorite record in Wilco's catalogue. I have no idea what that means...except that there is a very high standard when it comes to Wilco music.

Blue-Eyed Soul has always been one of my favorite '3 AM' songs since the first time I heard it.

As a whole, "A.M" is maybe the lighter of Wilco's work, but there are single songs that are very good, and one of my favourite is "Pick up the change", I love the lyrics, the guitar and the voice, the ending is perfect. I always liked this more than "Box full of letters".

> "Justin, I really regret making A.M....I really and truly do."...

really? sorry, but i dont believe that. why would they play Too far apart at every show nowadays, and throw in Box full of letters and, out of all tunes, Its just that simple every now and then on the current shows. you sure he wasnt being sarcastic?.. he has a habit of doing that

Still remeber, Chicago Great American Beer Festival at Navy Pier. Maybe Justine did not see the tour around A.M. At one point they all traded instruments. What fun. Of course back then I was probably one of only about 20 people actually paying attention to the band. (Beer is such a distractor) this was followed up by a Lounge Axe (Ax... whatever... don't tell me I spelled it wrong and I won't tell Sister Mary Elephant, I spell lots of things wrong, you should hear me pronounce them) I bought the ticket from Jeff, and Sue at the bar, on my birthday.

But SBS.. it's not even the same band, we are on Wilco III (at least). So no suprise someone could like apples better than oranges. A.M will always be one of my top albums EVER. And pick up the change... is a great song... HONEY! I don't think there is a clinker on the album.

I am sure there are a lot of things Jeff regrets. Splitting his pants in the loung lizard suit. Opening for Patti Smith. The Jean Jacket when it was 110. The aliens at the end of the century. But, things change. He is great song writer. And now they have enough material to do a retrospective. Bet they won't do John's song.
