The Flaming Lips in advertisements...

Recommended Posts

So I'm sure that we've all seen the new Land Rover ads with The Flaming Lips' "Do You Realize??" off Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots. Can't really throw stones there...ahem. But I just about died last night watching late night T.V. Hand to god...a Kraft Salad Dressing commercial with "The Yeah Yeah Yeah Song (With All Your Power)" off At War With the Mystics (it may have been a different song-but definitely off that album). I was immediately reminded of Danny Miller's rebuttal to "the V.W. controversy."

I actually don't care that much either way...maybe that's a lie. I kind of enjoy randomly hearing music I like at unexpected times. I certainly didn't mean to beat that dead horse, either. It just reminded me of Danny's blog is all. So carry on, folks. Nothing to see here!

There was a whole thread on this. I'm pretty sure you started it.

Yeah it was me. The issue is extremely important weather its in regard to the lips or any other form of entertainment. Sexism is everywhere in our culture and personally I think its awful to see a band using a good message and not mean it. Wayne seems to be full of shit. I used to be a big supporter of The Lips but they dont practice what they preach. Its the exploitation of a good message to create a false image to help sell concert tickets.

I fully believe in the right of artistic expression. I wouldn't have a problem with their show if they weren't verbally sending a contradictory message. Its one thing when they were doing this shit 10 years ago, when they were just another psychedelic rock band. But they have since become something very different. These guys have a huge impact on listeners and in process they are confusing them. First he is telling them to love everyone but then behind him theirs an image of a naked women, perfect build, hairless, and big breasts(all up to societies standards). What kind of message is that sending?

I made a decision to stop calling this sort of behavior selling out, and now refer to it as, jumping the shark.

b/c i recognize you as a stickler for info, you'll want to know that you are improperly using the phrase "jump the shark."

that phrase means when a show has gotten so desperate to generate story lines that they become ridiculous.

it's a reference to the happy days episode in which the fonzie is challenged to water ski jump a shark.

that is all.

From the urban dictionary:

jump the shark 207 up, 17 down

The precise moment when you know a program, band, actor, politician, or other public figure has taken a turn for the worse, gone downhill, become irreversibly bad, is unredeemable, etc.; the moment you realize decay has set in.

From a USA Today article entitled - "Jump the Shark swims into net age vernacular"

"But in cyberspace, where nitpicking has been honed to a fine art, Jump the Shark seems to have transcended its original meaning. "Clarence Thomas jumped the shark watching pornography, and Ken Starr writing it," Maureen Dowd quipped in a recent New York Times column. She goes on to add that Hillary Clinton "transcends mere jumping. She is the shark."

Enthused Brian Lund, a writer and analyst for the financial site Motley Fool: "The great thing about 'jump the shark' is that you can apply it to almost anything." - USA Today

oh no! the Flaming Lips have images of naked girls at their show! Oh no! That's sexist!

Come on. And for those saying they aren't "real" girls, they looked natural to me(no boob jobs). And who cares if they shave themselves? That's the way 99% of men prefer it so why wouldn't they?

The girls doing the posing don't seem to have any problem with it.

This goes out to Hype as well.

Just because somebody goes along with something doesn't mean they aren't being objectified. And the point you made Hype hits the nail on the head. MEN LIKE WOMEN that way, not women naturally decided shaving their legs and pits was awesome. If women don't conform to these standards they will be ostracized by our society.

A women with hair on her legs is natural. But being natural won't let her get a job on wall street, or a lead role in a movie. Society (run by rich white males) has shaped what it means to be a women, that idea doesn't sit well on my stomach. And any time a women goes against the grain of society she is labeled a feminist and for some reason that term has gotten a bad name in our culture.

Most women need to play the game according to rules created by males in order to be successful. I'd call that oppression.

The Lips putting these images on their screen is reenforcing societies stereotypes. Yet wayne babbles on about bringing people together and making a difference, I don't think those ideas go along with the oppression of women, something he is taking part in promoting.
