rockinrob
My favorite cover I have ever heard wilco do was "political Science" By Randy Newman. That was amazing!
willywoody
My favorite cover I have ever heard wilco do was "political Science" By Randy Newman. That was amazing! i'm partial to devo's gut feeling/slap your mammy.
Dan-O
My favorite cover I have ever heard wilco do was "political Science" By Randy Newman. That was amazing! I totally agree. All the same, I don't care if they throw covers into the set list or not. I'd rather hear an obscure Wilco tune.
dagwave
why don't you have an avatar? Possibly it was stolen w/ Watt's gear in Cananda.
rockinrob
Possibly it was stolen w/ Watt's gear in Cananda. Too soon man! We need to form a find Watt's gear group and scour the internet for it. Then we can get Nels to give it back to him and have a big jam!
rockinrob
I had actually never heard political science before Wilco played it. I loved the song, and checked out randy newman, and now I love randy newman. I think that is what is cool about them playing great covers; it turns people on to cool music they might not have heard otherwise.
Gobias Industries
Speaking of covers, they need to fucking play Gun. Technically a cover...ish.
cooperissup3r
Don't you think Wilco is past the point of the nostalgic cover? how could they be? Sky Blue Sky is a very nostalgic record. if anything, i'd say their whole persona as a band right now is very nostalgic.
jmacomber68w
Ive always hoped Wilco would do a Dead cover. Maybe Sugaree or The Other One
mfwahl
Ive always hoped Wilco would do a Dead cover. Maybe Sugaree or The Other OneThey've done Ripple, but if you're a dead fan, you might not like it
Guest Jules
Speaking of covers, they need to fucking play Gun. Technically a cover...ish.Jeff wrote it. Not a cover. how could they be? Sky Blue Sky is a very nostalgic record. if anything, i'd say their whole persona as a band right now is very nostalgic. You missed the point. I mean they have enough of a quality catalog that they don't need to (or shouldn't) waste a song with someone else's tune. I have no need to hear Wilco play a cover. Just my opinion. Saut Crapaud
i thought their cover of the Pogues "The Auld Triangle" on the 97 tour was well done. i also heard "i shall be released" and thought it was beautiful. not quite like hearing richard manuel sing the original but outstanding nonetheless
Guest Jules
Yeah, I do love it when Tweedy does covers, but when it comes to Wilco, give me the Wilco songs.
froggie
> I'm pretty sure Froggie is aware of this. a bit of sarcasm wont hurt anyone as for covers, there's always the 'somebody elses songs' bootleg that collects most of the covers they did
Three dollars and 63 cents
You missed the point. I mean they have enough of a quality catalog that they don't need to (or shouldn't) waste a song with someone else's tune. I have no need to hear Wilco play a cover. Just my opinion. I agree with this. There are so many songs in Wilco's catalog, and they can play pretty much any of them thanks to the Residency show. I don't think they're done doing covers, but they don't need to play one simply as a novelty. Why play someone else's song when you can play Someone Else's Song? Gobias Industries
Jeff wrote it. Not a cover. Technically an Uncle Tupelo song, so it is technically a cover. Even if Jeff wrote it.
Szabo
Dave played Sledgehammer in Omaha a couple weeks ago and it was awesome. Umphrey's did it 2 years ago and nailed it so well.
fragrantviolator
Didn't they do Any Major Dude for a movie soundtrack? I would love to see that live. Also, I think Wilco could do a great job covering the Band or some of the Dylan/Band material. Jeff and John could both do well with any of the Rick Danko vocals. Ferdinand the Imposter anyone?
ChooChooCharlie
Technically an Uncle Tupelo song, so it is technically a cover. Even if Jeff wrote it.Wilco doesn't really do 'Gun' (last time was in '97), so the only time its played is when Jeff does it. Even though Jeff solo isn't Tupelo, I don't think that qualifies as a cover b/c he wrote it. I love Gun though, and wish the band would do it -- cover or no. Didn't they do Any Major Dude for a movie soundtrack? I would love to see that live. Also, I think Wilco could do a great job covering the Band or some of the Dylan/Band material. Jeff and John could both do well with any of the Rick Danko vocals. Ferdinand the Imposter anyone?Yeah -- for Me, Myself, and Irene soundtrack. Definitely agree about some Band covers, as I am not above nostalgic covers. Goes back to the Stirratt as Danko convo. Wilco doing 'Chest Fever' would be sweeeeeet. jmacomber68w
At the Dave Matthews concert last weekend, they covered "Burning Down the House" and it kicked ass. See, thats why a Wilco & DMB fan is way better than a DMB fan (who either does not like Wilco or has yet to be exposed). I have experienced, on many* occasions, insane frustration while talking to some of my DMB friends. The type of people who have never heard the talking heads or that song, but because DMB covers it the song becomes great. I mentioned how much fun farm aid will be this year to somebody, and he said the only Neil Young song he has ever heard was Down By The River (but not Neil's version either just Dave's) *And on a side note when i typed "on many occasions", i originally type on Manny occasions. I blame ESPN for showing baseball highlights.
froggie
as for Gun, it can be done. Wilco played We've been had, until 2003 in the encores and there was a one-off version of No Depression in 2001 as well
Edie
and you could make an argument that the Mermaid Avenue stuff is all covers.
