The Almost-Official NHL 2008-09 Season Thread

If any of you can tune in and watch the World Juniors, there's an epic game right no between Canada and USA. USA was up 3 nothing but Canada climbed back thanks to Tavares, Hodgson, etc... all in the first!

That was by far the best hockey game I've seen all year. In fact, one of the best I've ever seen. Hope you all got to watch it.

Oh yeah, we could see just fine from the left field bleachers. Couldn't see well into the corner nearest us, but otherwise our view was a lot better than I expected. Obviously not as easy to see as a game in an arena, but a lot better than I had thought it would be.

i really enjoyed the game eventhough the Wings took over from the beginning of the 2nd Period on. There is a great thing going on in Chicago though. the 'Hawks are on there way back from subpar hockey. i love Patrick Kane and i think they will be a dangerous team in playoffs.

Hoping that next year's Winter Classic will be at Fenway Park with the BRUINS hosting.

btw, Phil Kessel is from Madison, WI played for Univ. of Minnesota and is having a great season so far. My Guy!!!

Is Boston cold enough in the winter? I was initially surprised that they could host a game outside in Chicago, until I remembered I Am Trying To Break Your Heart. One of the many things Wilco teaches me.

I still think the Winter Classic should be an east vs west match up, to make it a little more special.

Regardless, all the NHL I've tried to watch since last night seems a little boring compared to that WJC game. Can't believe you guys missed that! Next time there's a game where teams like Russia, Sweden, USA, or Canada square off, try to watch it online, I'm seriously impressed with some of these junior teams.

yeah Bruins win 4-2 over the Penguins. wow! Happy to see Lucic and Axelsson getting involved, watchout when those guys and Sturm get hot. Oy vey!!!!

I agree with Dr. Canuck, west vs east for Winter Classic. although i think it should be Original Six every year for Classic. Heat up the Rivalries!!

but to suit Dr. Canuck, Vancouver vs Toronto outdoor would be awesome!!!

wish i was playing hockey again. i loved it!!

I'd rather Vancouver vs Rangers, Bruins, or Habs. Any day I don't watch the Leafs is a good day.

Next year... Yankee Stadium versus... hmmmmmmm maybe Boston? Leafs? Philly? Probably Leafs, they haven't been involved in any of these games, the center of the universe needs their attention.

The holiday's are done, the snow is still here, CFL is done, NFL is almost done, this is the time of year for hockey! :D

The Winter Classic was an awesome time. Wasn't too cold, and the atmosphere was great. I'll post some crappy pics if I can figure out how to.

The night before we went to Gibson's, and I pointed out a pic of Chelios with the Cup on the wall. He asked me if it was a Canadien's Cup or a Wings Cup. I told him that Chelios was way too orange for that to be a Canadien's Cup. A woman behind me laughed and introduced herself as Chelios' sister. (She looked just like him). Then the sister introduced me to Mom Chelios, and said that Chris was on his way. Sure enough, Chelios showed up. A few minutes after his arrival, Lidstrom showed up with family in tow. After him, Lilja and (hot) wife. We were sat next to Brad McCrimmon's table, and 2 tables from Lidstrom (crappy pics to follow, see note above). Samuelsson showed up later. Pretty awesome night for this Wings fan.

Datsyuk had the play of the game, but the check that sent Cleary into the Hawks' bench was awesome.

The US national anthem was the best I've ever heard, but I could barely hear it because everyone around me was bellowing it at the top of their lungs, me included. That was awesome.

The lame parts:

No player intros? Lame.

The spark-shooting fireworks and flamey towers? REALLY lame.

And please, NHL, PLEASE cut the ubiquitous shitty music. Let the crowd make the noise. At most, the only other music should be the organ. The next day I watched the pre-shows on the NHL channel and NBC. Both really really sucked. There was no history of the rivalry - only lame snippets of factoids like how long it takes the team to get to the field from the locker rooms, or how the wind or sunshine might affect gameplay. Suck-ass.

I'm jealous! But Canada winning gold for 5 straight years fixes all.

NBC's coverage of the NHL has always been pathetic at best. The NHL needs to get back on ESPN.

i dont think ESPN will take back NHL. but who knows? once the VS network contract is up, maybe they will. living in milwaukee, i get a few Minnesota games on Fox Sports Network but no Blackhawks games. too bad. they are fun to watch.

That's fucking stupid, I live in Prince George, British Columbia, and I get a local Chicago station and can watch Blackhawk games.

The buzz is that they're working out a deal with ESPN... we'll see I guess.

Do your guys local teams do pay per views?

It's called WGN, I never really watch it unless there's a Blackhawks game on and I have nothing to do.

Interesting. In the US, I think you only get the WGN Hawks games if you are in the Chicago area. Otherwise, you get the WGN Superstation, which blacks out the Hawks games. We also get additional games on Comcast Sportsnet and CLTV (last night, for example).

Yeah, in Canada most hockey games are on Rogers Sportsnet which has an East, West, Pacific, and Ontario stations, but if I want to watch an Oiler game on Rogers Sportsnet West, being in BC, I get blacked out. I don't know why I can watch Hawk games, maybe because Chicago is so far away..? Maybe I'm not suppose to get them, in which case, I will stop mentioning it on the internet!

Man, Lundqvist needs a break. Maybe a vacation to the Bahamas for a week or so.
