Tina Weymouth (Talking Heads bassist)

Recommended Posts

My favorite bass player, ever.

:worship

Although, Larry Graham (Sly & the Family Stone) and James Jamerson (Motown studio guy) are pretty damn close, too.

Tina just has a way of combining the groove of Motown with the melodicism of Paul McCartney. I don't think I've heard anybody else do it quite as good as her.

Favorite Tina moment:

"The Good Thing"

In particular, at the end, with the little ascending thing that she does.

Let's show some appresh for a woman who is not only one of the best female bass players, but one of THE best bass players, period!!!

I loves me some Tina.

I like Tina, but never thought she was one of the all-time greats.

Listen to "The Good Thing".

Listen to "The Good Thing".

She's highly competent, to be sure. And I am a fan.

However, I'll take Sir Paul, Bruce Thomas, John Entwistle, Victor Wooten, John McVie, John Paul Jones, David Steele...

See, those guys are all virtuosos, and I like them all (some more than others). But none of them can really groove like Tina does.

I love Tina, but I think no one can groove like Macca.

We'll agree to disagree.

Do you have that No Talking, Just Head album? She grooves on that too.

I do not. I'll have to check it out.

Yeah, we're just going to have to disagree on that.

"Found A Job", "Born Under Punches", "Making Flippy Floppy", "Animals" and "The Great Curve" all feature bass that no white girl has any business playing.

Tina rocks. Thoroughly. Big, big influence on my own bass playing.

I've said it before, and I will say it again. The bass should be renamed the Paul McCartney.

The Bassist Bible might look like this:

"There was the bass, and it was Paul McCartney."

-Genesis 1:1

No one can match the Macca. Tina is a great bassist, she was super-foxy in those days too, but Macca outduels everyone in a sheer contest of melody.

In terms of technical ability one cannot overlook Victor Wooten, though.

I'm surprised that no one ever mentions Aston "Family Man" Barrett. My all time favorite bass player, and the man who invented Reggae bass.

Definitely deserves a mention when talking about the best. :yes

If the only thing John Stirratt ever did was the bass line on Handshake Drugs, he would go down in the Bassist's Hall of Fame. Thank goodnes John has done some other things as well. But the bass line in Handshake Drugs is da bomb as the kidz say.

Tina is a great bass player. Not an all-time favorite, but in my top 50.

Other favorites include: Bootsy Collins, Charles Mingus, Larry Graham, James Jamerson, Paul McCartney...
