lamradio
I'm trying to make an R.E.M. best of. I've never been a huge fan of R.E.M., so I'm not sure where to start. But I'm in one of those "need new music" phases and I figured I'd start with good ol' rem.

nodep5
I know this won't help, but REM for me, is the perfect example of a band you are suppose to love, but can never get into. I think it is M Stipe's singing or lyrics, but I never feel connected. Trust me I have tried. I own 4 or 5 early REM records on vinyl and most everything from GREEN through the 90's. Just when you are making your best of don't forget E Bow The Letter off of New Adventures in Hi Fi and don't forget At My Most Beautiful off of UP. That is as far as I will go with this and my recomendations.

Good point. Maybe that's why I've never been a huge fan. This compilation is mostly for my wife cause she has been into them lately. But I really liked R.E.M.'s Monster; I wore that CD out.. 1994 was just a really good year for music for me. Weezer - Blue album, Portishead - Dummy, STP - Purple. While I'm thinking about it, 93 wasn't too shabby either. Pearl Jam - Ten, Nirvana - In Utero, Breeders - Last Splash, Radio Head - Pablo Honey, Flaming Lips, Smashing Pumpkins, etc. etc. Geeze, 93, 94.. Thats enough material for a whole thread. cryptique
Because I'm one of those people who thinks this band wasn't the same after jumping to a major label, all of my favorites are from their first five albums (plus the Chronic Town EP). myboyblue
REM is one of the best bands around. People complain about their most recent output but even their worst albums have some gems on them. Moss
I would say you can't go wrong with either Lammy's or Cryptique's lists. As long as it has a big healthy dose of Chronic Town and Murmur you should be good. I would also add "Ignoreland" to my list.

Guest Gym Teacher Man
I would say no to Crush with Eyeliner and I Had a Bad Day or whatever that terrible song was called. Those are garbage in my book.
Lammycat
Didn't Courtney Love suggest that "Crush..." was written with her in mind?

Guest Speed Racer
I've never really sought out R.E.M. - that is, chosen to listen to them specifically - but I do own nearly all of their albums and have played them through once or twice a piece, at least. That being said, my two favorites are "Tongue" and "Nightswimming." I love what they do, I think they're great for doing it, but it's not my kind of music. I know "Tongue" is kind of a left field pick, but I really do love it.
spongebob
I am an album guy, so I would recomend Murmur, Reckoning, Life's Rich Pagent, Document, Out of Time, and Automatic for the People. The other albums have good songs, but these albums are where it is at for R.E.M. in my opinion. Chronic Town is a great e.p., but pick up Dead Letter Office instead. It has Chronic Town and other B-Sides. A song is like a chapter in a book, agian, another opinion, but it is hard to fully understand a book from just one or two chapters. anyway.....now I am starting to sound like ann landers. Though I might cherry pick my way through select cuts of the post AFTP album (their greatest by far IMHO). Driver 8 is great off Dead Letter Office -- it could be a Wilco song. I always thought Out of Time was a near perfect pop album, a tour through genres, but my wife played the grooves off it.
