sgtpepper64
But that list drives me nuts. I swear he made some of that stuff up. And who makes a list of what they play on an album? Is it written down in his college rule notebook with "Nebraska" scrawled on the dog-eared cover? My sentiments exactly.
Guest Wilco Rules Me
Really, you think he made it up? I think that is highly unlikely. Plus if I helped make a record I for sure would know what parts were mine on said record.
Basil II
Bennett shoved Jeff into creative areas where Farrar couldn't find himself going to.....that's why he's still sounds the same ,musically and lyrically. Bennett does get bad rap ...IMHO. -Robert
giraffo
the only thing that makes me question that list is that he probably didn't flat out lie but just exaggerated what's there or wrote it there arbitrarily ("oh yeah, and I played percussion on that track). also wasn't Poor Places reworked and on record it's only JT, JOR and Glenn? I read that in the Greg Kot book, I believe.
SarahC
so, this doesn't mean anything, but at the Birmingham (i think) son volt show the other day (i am repeating this from reading it on the SV board) some guy yelled at Jay that "Tweedy is a fag" and Jay got pissed and told the guy "I don't go to your work and scream obnoxious shit at you!" and as they left the stage gave the guy the finger, so in effect Jay stuck up for Jeff... I'm sure its not like Jay, but he should go to the guy's work and scream obnoxious shit at him, although he may not appreciate the Seinfeld reference. And that list is crap if only for use of the (non)word "noiz". Hell, I can't remember everything I play on every single song. And there's no one else in my band. I think it's because people are worried for this next record. I see an overriding sense that the band is not pushing jeff enough to piss him off into that wakeful sense of "Oh....that works or dammmit.....you 're right right on that".......and Bennett was part of the blame for that .........Jeff leaned on him quite a bit early on and as jeff matured as an artist,he rebelled against Jay's sense of musical "superiority" .......and now, lyrically much of it is still there for me....but musically....meh. -robert
caliber66
Isn't "Hey Chicken" a big fat How-Do-You-Sleep from Tweedy to Farrar? If that's the case, then it sounds like he's got as much to let go of as Jay. I don't deny his contributions by any means. I just think he's a cocky guy and I'd rather not see him perform with Jeff. Plus, I think some of those co-writing credits are a little overblown, but that's just IMHO.YHO based on what?
dondoboy
^When SBS came out and I was a bit disappointed my girlfriend said "You only like him when he's about to can somebody".(She's a little bit wrong though, Leroy left on his own).

I read that in the Greg Kot book, I believe. I am pretty sure the Loose Fur section of Poor Places starts is in the middle of the song it starts at 2:30 "it makes no difference to me" and lasts until about three minute mark when the piano cames back in. Some random thoughts... on every Wilco album except Yankee there is either a track-by-track breakdown of who played what in the linear notes or in the case of Being There a list of what everyone on the album after each member. I actually like Jay Farrar a lot more now after reading that for some reason. I am in complete agreement with Robert as to why we're seeing so many Jay threads, and I have feeling unless if the next album is more in the vein of Sky Blue Sky we're going to be seeing even more of them. With that said I kind of feel I am personally just spinning my wheels in these threads, and we kind of end having the same exact conversation on all of them. That said I'd rather read these than the Blu Ray thread. --Mike

That happened to me with REM, but not Wilco. I suppose I think it's sort of weird to keep wanting someone to come back to the band who apparently created problems for Jeff and the band as a whole. It's no secret that Being There is my favorite Wilco album and Jay Bennett is certainly on that record, but that was then, this is now.

Guest Speed Racer
I think what Mike is saying in terms of the lists is that on every Wilco album prior, each members contributions were listed, so it's not wholly unusual that Jay would know everything he played. There are some songs that sound a LOT like Jay's writing on YHF to me (Jesus, etc. being one of them, and several incarnations of K/Camera are very Jay), so I don't think he's exaggerating on the writing credits too much. The instrument list drives me nuts, though. I don't doubt for a second he played everything he says he did, but YHF has some parts where Jay seriously could have sat on a piano for half a measure and he credits himself on that. And we don't even know how many instruments he played that didn't make the final cut! All throughout IATTBYH the members keep saying what a collaborative process it was, and how much everyone was contributing. That, to me, is why they didn't write who was playing what; Jay's score-keeping underscores to me why he's a 'was' in the 'is/was'. Back on topic, I think a Jay F reunion is MUCH more likely at this point. I think Jay B's wounds are still pretty fresh; stylistically and emotionally, I think Jay F and Jeff have shown that they're past that in a lot of respects. Jeff has a lot more confidence, and they have the "Wow, we were young assholes" thing to fall back on. "Wow, we were on a lot of substances and very emotionally rocky," doesn't strike me as completely past tense for Jay B, based on interviews and concert reviews I've heard in the past years. HungryHippo
i'd like to see Tweedy and Bennett collaborate with one another sometime in the future. i'm not saying Jay should re-join Wilco, just kinda hoping they'd get together for a side project or something. they both seem to be level headed guys with a common love for musical exploration which, hopefully, out weighs all of that other negative junk that seemed to have caused so many problems in the past. they're 2 talented dudes that create magic when they come together. the world should not be deprived of that brilliance. For me, it's YHF. I still like what I hear coming out but it seems like many many bands get that one record ( DSOTM, Tommy, etc.) that sort of defines a pinnacle of their career and for me YHF is that record. They won't ever sound like that again (to their credit) but, then again, they may never make a record that kills me like YHF does. But, I'm OK with that.
patrickhayes
So if there was a Tweedy-Farrar/UT reunion who would play drums? Tweedy pissed off/ fired Coomer and Farrar pissed off/ fired Heidorn. It just wouldn't work with Glen folks....

This is a cool story, but I'm not sure I'd take this as Jay sticking up for Jeff. If I am Jay (or Jeff), I'd be pretty effing sick of hearing anyone yell out anything about Jeff (or Jay) at a show all these years later. They have both moved on, but folks still can't let go (see these threads). Whether someone is badmouthing Jeff or complimenting him, I just can't imagine Jay wants to hear about it at a Son Volt show. Just my $.02.
