Happy stories in 2009?

Recommended Posts

With all these dreay stories about job losses, mortgage issues, war etc does anyone have any happy stories to share for 2009 of things that have happened or things you are looking forward to?

For me 2008 was a great year..got married, bought a house and finally made it to Australia!

2009 not so good...water issues in the basement (very expensive to fix...) also company is peeling back benefits and laying off people (like everywhere else).

For 2009 though I am looking forward to going to Belize in April! Might be a trip to the Atlantic Providences in the Summer also am currently planning a family trip to Colorado/New Mexico in September. In addition I am looking forward to the Spring/Summer to start home improvement projects like landscaping, painting and can't wait to go to the beach during the summer! :thumbup

2009 has been going pretty good for us so far. Although we've had some friends lose their jobs, which is hard to see, especially when they have families with kids and all that.

I'm excited to start school full time in May, excited to get working in the yard and to be able to spend more than a few minutes outside without getting frostbitten.

Just yesterday I found out the friendly biker guy in my neighborhood has been practicing drums in his shed. Also yesterday, I ran into a neighbor at a Mexican restaurant who is selling his house. He told me a young couple has it under contract and they close in March. The husband, he says, is a musician who plays in a band. So that means there are at least two people within 100 yards of my house that I'll soon be able to jam with.

Also, Wilco is playing on my birthday in Knoxville and I have tickets.

My church is working with an Iraqi refugee family of 10 that just arrived 2 weeks ago. One of our church members (who is undergoing an intense round of chemo) has moved out of her house and into the living room of another church couple so that they can move in at a steeply discounted rent.

The family is really excited and optimistc. I know that their life will be tough to start here, but it is pretty exciting stuff.

I have a nephew due to arrive in April.

My alcoholic friend is in 30 day rehab right now, finally. Hopefully, sobriety will convince him to divorce his psycho wife.

My daughter starts kindergarten this fall, which means no more dropping buckets of dough on Montessori school anymore, woohoo!

I get to see Andrew Bird next month.

And every day I wake up knowing the world is my oyster (and it's not a rancid oyster too often.)

Did you like the Montessori school? Obviously they are all a little different, but we're trying to decide whether to move our daughter to one when she hits 18 months. Right now she's at a church day care, which is good, but we think she might get more out of the Montessori. Cost is roughly the same.

Wow! looks awesome. I loved Australia make sure you hit up Tasmania...I thought that was incredible. Japan and Israel were also worth it. If you go to Argentina and are near Buenos Aires go to El Tigre ...take lots of pictures! Enjoy yourself! :thumbup

Yeah there are many places we may hit up if we can find a cheap way to do it and Japan is one of them. For this trip the plan is travel very cost-effectively. We will have no States-side expenses and I have a side business that requires very little care and feeding that brings in enough money that we will be able to do this trip and come back with more money than when we left. But ONLY if we avoid the more expensive destinations. For example, I talked about wanting to go tot he Galapagos while we are in Ecuador but, if we do, we'll have to find something WAY cheaper than what is advertised.

Montessori is a good program, overall. You definitely want to ask a lot of questions before you sign up. I visited our school as an observer for one of my college courses and decided I wanted to send my kid there based on what I saw. I'm a little sour on this particular school now because my daughter has been coming home singing "Jesus Loves Me" and talking about angels and heaven. I didn't see that coming, had no idea they were going to discuss those sorts of things...it's something I'd rather they leave to us, as parents, but it's not been a major issue. :dontgetit
