Sir Stewart
I'm disappointed that that kind of comment comes naturally to him. If Bush said it - there'd be a three-page thread here at this point.

mfwahl
I must be missing something in addition to not being able to see the picture. He said his favorite show is The Wire, but I have a feeling this is not that type of thread.

OOO
Last night, Leno mockingly said that Obama's score of 129 in bowling was really good. And because he knew he was being made fun of he said "Yeah, its like the special olympics, or something." I too was disappointed that he'd make a joke like that. He did personally call the special olympics and apologize, but now the special olympics has challenged Obama to hire a special olympics athlete in the white house. I think that would be a nice gesture. Also, the Special Olympics bowling champion (who averages 266 and has had 3 perfect games) challenged Obama to a bowling game. Thats a little reminder that the folks in the special olympics are actually really good at the sports they compete in. I'm 100% certain I would lose in any and every event at the special olympics. That guy is a bagger at Busch's in Ann Arbor. (Local grocery chain) Obama should take the challenge. I'd pay to see that.
RaspberryJam
When I watched it, it didn't seem to me to be a slam on the Special Olympics or Special Olympic athletes. Obama gave his best bowling score, Leno took a big pause, then started started saying how that was a good score, giving him a bunch of praise. It seemed to me that Obama was joking on getting the praise for the good effort, not for an individually spectactular score or anything. At the Special Olympics, everyone gets praise and told they are doing well. I didn't take away Obama saying anything against the S.O., it was a comment on Leno's reaction. But I guess someone could take offense, if they looked really hard.

DARRRRRR!!" and then he should have done his best John Lennon spastic imitation.

isadorah
I hope he spends some time fixing this gaffe. Like 30 seconds or so. agreed. you know, i think we're a bit too sensitive sometimes. bigger fish to fry. oh wait, if we say that then we have to call the vegans and vegetarians and fish lovers of the country and apologize for insinuating that fish are good for frying. then we'd have to call all the fish companies and apologize for insinuating with our apology that fish aren't good to fry. and then we'd have to apologize to all of the health care folks and nutritionist for insinuating that frying fish is a good thing, and then.... you get my point. indy81
Wow. People are defending Obama here? Is it really a stretch to think that's not an appropriate joke for the President of the United States to make on national television? It's hard to believe that people might be offended when he directly equates a shitty sports performance with the Special Olympics? I like Barack but I think he gets a little too comfortable in these "informal" appearances.

RaspberryJam
Let me clarify my statement above. If I felt that he directly equated a shitty performance with the Special Olympics, I would be the first one to condemn it. I saw it live, before the news shows this morning, and thought at the time that he was making a comment on Jay Leno's reaction, not that his bowling is Special Olympic caliber. I also thought that he made a joke off the cuff that could be and probably taken poorly. I'll be the first to say that the president should not make any joke with the subject being developmently disabled athletes. Stupid off the cuff joke implying that Jay Leno was indulging him? yes. A direct disregard for the good the S.O. stands for? Didn't seem that way.

uncool2pillow
Can't find it on the Onion's Homepage, but on Facebook, I got this: BREAKING: Obama On Special Olympics Gaffe: 'Sorry, I Acted Like A Retard' Perfect! Somehow, I think Obama read this on his Blackberry and laughed his ass off...

LenF
I like Barack but I think he gets a little too comfortable in these "informal" appearances. I agree. I think he's a bright man and I am glad he is our president. He also seems like somebody who would make you feel very comfortable if you had the chance to be around him but he's shown some poor judgment in letting himself relax in the public spotlight. I don't think last night's statement or having a beer at an arena is that big of a deal in the grand scheme of things but it just creates a bunch of noise that can get in the way of doing his job. Beltmann
It was a dumb thing to say, and it's not the first time, either: Remember his ill-judged crack about Nancy Reagan's astrology? Still, as far as "scandals" go, this is fairly trivial.
