In a little rowboat
Am i the first one back?? I cant believe im starting this with my bad memory and whisky shots Great, great venue (cap 1100) and while sold out, not quite full...crowd, not so much great...not great except the front few rows...big frat party really, to the point where 5 songs into it Jeff prods the crowd about talking...then some after just plan gets mad " hey! John used to live here..."...then later berates the kids for rushing to buy a ticket just to be seen and socialize, some thing like"i know your all rich and all...but in this economy...LISTEN!" But its Ole Miss so what do you want? Wished theyd played Memphis instead... Several folks had the setlist, which i cant remember, but highlights for me were ALTWYS, Sunken treasure, Boxfull, The Lonely One, California stars (with Hawk $ Hacksaw on back up), trading licks on Hoodoo to close...and the looks I got on Impossible Germany on the "I know your not listening...' lyric...after a while it was just the band and the few people up front paying attention...Pat's fam was there... The band was in good spirits despite clearly being pissed about the crowd...to the point to where by !st encore, while some tech issue plagued Mikel, jeff leaned, over to me on the rail and asked "does this suck or what" and I nodded...but they had fun with it regardless Never a bad show with them, and for me amazing as Id never been that close, No new songs, afraid...I may try to add more later...I felt very bad for the opening act
tugmoose
The good crowd must have been in Columbus, Ohio, on Thursday for the Neko Case show. Sorry, Oxford.
bböp
Here was the complete setlist of what was played in Oxford (someone who got a printed setlist might be able to confirm, but I think they almost certainly didn't play at least three or four songs that were planned): Sunken TreasureYou Are My FaceIATTBYHPot Kettle BlackHandshake DrugsA Shot in the ArmAt Least That's What You SaidJesus, etc.Impossible GermanyIt's Just That SimpleForget The FlowersMisunderstoodThe Lonely 1Shouldn't Be AshamedBox Full of LettersHeavy Metal Drummer--------------------------The Late GreatsHate It HereWalkenI'm The Man Who Loves You--------------------------California Stars (w/A Hawk and a Hacksaw)Hoodoo Voodoo
browngw
My wife had told me to take a little road trip and go see Wilco last night. From the sound of the crowd I'm glad I didn't make the drive from Texas. At least I have OKC to look forward to in June.

Wilmington! And the south wonder why they don't get a lot of concerts! Normally because of bad ticket sales but c'mon the crowd sounded ridiculous.

OKC is less than two months away, though. And the last time I saw them at Bricktown, it was a great show.
Hoodoo Man
Coming from a guy who was standing in front of the soundboard, it definitely wasn't just the first few rows that were into it. But surely, that was the lamest crowd I've ever been part of. For years I've heard bad things about shows at Ole Miss and now I have confirmation. Oxford/Ole Miss should never be on anyone's tour stop. Oxford isn't a true representation of what concert crowds in the south are like. Oxford is a world unto itself and the residents/students like it that way and are more than happy to perpetuate the many stereotypes that exist about Ole Miss. For me the worst offenders were 4 guys all over 6'2" who seemed to enjoy pushing their way through the crowd after picking up another 4 beers from the bar, to stand directly in front of someone shorter than them (like me). They then would proceed to talk constantly except for the one guy who decided he should clear out some room to show everybody around him, how good of a dancer he is. It's probably good that I am short and very patient, or there might have been a fight. And my last bitch about the show, the Lyric Theater is hardly a theater. It is a gutted old building with 2 bars set up on the sides. I expected a refurbished, classic-looking theater and it's basically a big bar. Sorry about the bitching. That said, Wilco was outstanding. I commend them for soldiering through the show. They played for around 2 hours and gave us 2 encores. Jeff's voice was in fine form. The band is so tight I don't think they could put on a bad show if they wanted to. It was cool to hear some older tunes like Shouldn't Be Ashamed, It's Just That Simple and Forget the Flowers. The other times I've seen them the sets were mostly YHF, AGIB and SBS. Glenn was a beast. Nels is a freak of nature (in a good way). Mike surprised me by beating up his keyboard with a pillow during Shot In The Arm. I've never noticed him doing that before but maybe that's standard. John's always great on bass but I thought his backing vocals sounded really sharp last night, as well as his leads on Just That Simple. Pat was really hamming it up for his family and it's easy to see where he gets it. His dad was dancing around and playing air guitar the whole time. Jeff dedicated Hoodoo Voodoo to him. All and all, I had a good time. Seeing and hearing Wilco (as best I could through all the talking) made the night worthwhile. In conclusion, I found that I really love Wilco and I really hate people. (I'm just kidding, sort of)
memphismama
I have to chime in that I was shocked at the rudeness of the crowd even after being scolded by Tweedy. It was ridiculous. I hate that we might have missed songs b/c of the Ole Miss kids' need to socialize. But Pat's dad's dancing was delightful. And all the old songs were great. I saw them at the Ford Center on Ole Miss campus in 2006 and the crowd was not like this (I think there was no alcohol sold?). But nothing beats the reverence of the Nashville audiences. You could almost hear a pin drop when they played the Ryman in 2006. Seeing Wilco is like going to church for me. And Southern audiences are usually great.
Jim Boeheim
It was a great show. I was right in the middle of the crowd, and everyone around me was cool. There were definitely some douches there, no question, and they deserved to be called out. However, I'm hardly shocked that a rock concert, where alcohol is served, in a college town would attract its fair share of assholes. Didn't ruin it for me, hopefully it didn't for the band. They seemed to enjoy themselves when it was all said and done.
therev
The band was great last night and the crowd in the upstairs balcony (where it sounds a lot better) was not nearly as chatty as I guess the kids were downstairs. The only thing worse than the people talking in the audience was Jeff whining about it.
kavorka
The show at Oxford was good enough. all Wilco shows are pretty darn good, but you could see the difference from the prior night. Tweedy was pissed (downright angry) from the beginning. he never seemed to get over it which is unfortunate. being directly in front of him, it kind of wore on me. i don't know, if you want to shut the crowd up, rock out the entire show. Sloss Furnace, the night before, was off the hook. Another thing, hawk and hacksaw were not a good opening act for a wilco show. sure, they're good musicians, but they just don't fit in. i'm surprised they didn't get heckled more. just because Wilco likes them doesn't mean i have too. they irritated me so bad the first night i wore ear plugs the next night. they almost put me to sleep. boring. exhausting. CaptainFantastic
In these instances, the band should do the album version of Less Than You Think, a 45-minute Spiders, and/or Misunderstood with 126 nothings.

But I said ALMOST. Because even a shitty venue and a rowdy crowd would have been worth a live show. Oh well. OKC soon!!
