Recommended Posts

Here was the setlist for the first night at Vicar Street:

—"The Price Is Right" theme music intro—

Wilco (the song)

IATTBYH>

One Wing

A Shot in the Arm

Bull Black Nova

You Are My Face

I'll Fight

Impossible Germany

It's Just That Simple

Sonny Feeling

Handshake Drugs (w/Janet Weiss on shakers)

Jesus, etc.

You Never Know

Hate It Here

Walken

I'm The Man Who Loves You

Hummingbird

---------------------

A Magazine Called Sunset

Misunderstood>

Spiders (Kidsmoke)

---------------------

Box Full of Letters

Can't Stand It

Hoodoo Voodoo

I'm A Wheel

The printed setlist indicated that the first song of the first encore was supposed to be At Least That's What You Said, but Jeff decided to indulge someone's request for Magazine instead (and jokingly made them say thank you afterward). :lol

The "We Are The Champions" crowd singalong from the other night in London was resurrected toward the end of Spiders, though I'm not sure if it was prompted by a lack of crowd participation this time. At any rate, Jeff did first tip a cap to the Irish crowd with a line or two — off-mike — from "The Boys Are Back In Town." Maybe not too many people heard that, but it definitely happened. :thumbup

Not sure what Janet Weiss was doing in town, but she seemed to surprise even Jeff when she suddenly appeared for Handshake. She said Glenn had asked her to come up. Haha. Everyone was, of course, fine with it. And it was a fun performance of that song. :rock

I always forget how great it is to see the band in a smallish, GA venue. The sound is really great at Vicar Street, and the guys just seemed to be very into it. Nels was really on tonight, I thought, and of course it's always great to hear John sing.

Perhaps some people have been wondering about Blitzen Trapper. I don't know their entire catalog all that well, but they played about 40 minutes tonight (after only getting 30 in London). I personally enjoyed their acoustic-y stuff more, especially the mid-set, one-two combination of "Furr" and "Lady on the Water," but they can rock out as well. Pretty sure they also did "God & Suicide." They seem like nice guys, so hopefully tomorrow won't be last bill we get to see them share with Wilco. Also, tonight they seemed to be having a bit of technical difficulties with electricity and feedback. Hopefully they manage to iron that out by tomorrow night's set.

Wow. That's an incredible setlist! One Wing, I'll Fight, Sonny, Simple, Misunderstood, Letters ... and Wheel as a closer? I'm envious, P. Sounds like a great trip so far.

Thanks for the report on Blitzen Trapper, too. I'm enjoying all of Furr lately and hope to be able to check them out live soon.

Thanks for editing your initial post after mine and making me look like I can't read, P! :P Gosh, I miss small GA venues.

Sorry, B. I usually post the setlist first and then go back and edit the post if I feel like tacking some notes onto the end or whatever. :pirate

No problem, now that I officially logged my complaint. "Furr" is my favorite Blitzen Trapper song; I'll bet that was great live. Granted, I know about three Blitzen Trapper songs.

Your account of this show makes me miss Otto's. Is Vicar Street that small? Can't be, right?

Nah, it's not nearly as tiny as Otto's. Probably about 1,500-2,000 capacity if I had to guess. There's a U-shaped balcony with seats, so that adds some room. And there's a similar U-shaped ring of seats on the main floor as well, though I don't know if those are GA or reserved or what. But anyway, the stage is pretty low and the acoustics are just really good for a club.

It's actually a pretty nice space; the main floor is carpeted. You definitely wouldn't find that at Otto's. :pirate

twas another epic show. i met jeff and john outside their hotel beforehand and we had a laugh about Burt. roll on the second show tonight

Magazine....? Lucky buggers. Sounds like a better set than Troxy - I suspect you'll get a very different show tonight, as it was was second night at Vicar st last time.

Talking of which, glad they remembered the Burt episode! Have a great time tonight - last night of the tour isn't it?

Damn fine show last night. Really looking forward to tonights show.

I taped and it came out pretty good only with one major problem. When I got home I realised I had a loose mic cable so the right channel drops out quite a few times during the show. If anyone has the means and knowledge to repair this let me know.

I've sorted the problem with the mic cable so hopefully tonights recording will be more successful.

a few things occured to me after seeing wilco last night for the first time in exactly a year (it was a belter by the way!!)

- michael (spelling?, sorry..) is a severely underrated member of the band and this is exhibited by his use of a silk cushion to mash the keys towards the end of shot in the arm

- john's denim jacket with embroidery is the best demin jacket currently in existence (this is a fact)

- glenn & nels are not only respectively supreme musicians but their enthusiasm is always moreso impressive

- pat has CHOPS on the guitar! i ctually never knew that until i saw him rock out in hoodoo voodoo

- i have intense sentimentality for the song, its just that simple.

ahh man, what a band!

not sure if you can repair it very successfully. The best thing would be to patch the channel that has recorded into the 'vacant' channel where it's missing. If it's a stereo recording, it'll mean going into mono for those sections, but it'll be better than a whole channel going dead for those periods, and might not even be noticed without paying much attention.

Fantastic show last night, they seemed to really enjoy it too. Loved I'll Fight. Super set-list, would love to be going tonight. Cool that John sang It's Just That Simple.

Nels Cline using as egg-whisk on the guitar, Sonic Youth would have been proud.

Wow, I'd sure love to see Wilco at Otto's again......probably something that will never happen, but would be so great!

Paul, you must be early celebrating your birthday! Continue having fun and thanks always for your setlist and descriptions....! :)

Just back from Ireland, but I have to say probably the two best Wilco shows we've seen (so far!) - more on night 2 in the correct thread.

Managed to score a place at the barrier right in front of Nels and am officially deaf. I've often thought that at previous shows he ain't loud enough, but being so close it was great to see (and hear!) everything he puts into the show. Right from the first bars of W(TS) he was totally into it. My theory is that being so tall, he has his amp cranked up so high to hear it, but beware! if you're in front of it you will die... My ears are still ringing some four days later.

I would argue that the crowd were not laid back as some seem to think - again I was being deafened from behind by the singing and Jeff thanked everyone at one point for singing along to 'Jesus, etc'

Great to hear 'Just that simple' for the first time live also and to see Jeff play bass. I also thought at one point during 'Hummingbird' he was going to end up on top of me when he vainly tried to mount the monitor, then pretended to pull a muscle.

I think I can solve the Janet Weiss mystery. During Blitzen Trapper's set I turned around to see her standing right next to me in the pit! Couldn't quite pick up the courage to say hi, which I regret, as I love her playing. During Wilco's set, I could see her behind the monitor desk at stage right draping herself over one of the Blitzen guys - it's a rock and roll romance people...!

Anyway to confirm - Vicar Street is a great space to see Wilco and we'll go back there anytime to see them.

Just two brilliant nights of music with Friday just pipping it.The first night i also was at left hand side of stage but never got "Clined" but got Spanished.Somehow got caught up in a circle of yabbering Spanish folk talked thru every moment.Ah well that's life.Hummingbird was a highlight as Jeff was Sans guitar and was giving it laldy with the microphone.Started swinging it 360 degrees by his side let it go and came crashing down near Mikaels keyboards.Anyway great night and seriously thinking of getting over to London in November

Excellent!!! (apart from the guy down front badly clapping, who looks suspiciously like yours truly). Take it as a botched attempt to stop you contravening the 'no video' rule - you'll probably be banned from now on...
