Al.Ducts
Thanks Jeff and Company for your kindness! My kids will always remember your music as they grow musically! These are the types of photos that count! Sounds like you had a wonderful experience.
In a little rowboat
Oooooh, I should also add: Wilco's audience has widened significantly since 1997, and there are a LOT more children (kids under 15) at shows, from what I'm seeing and also hearing here on the boards. I don't think it's unfair at all to hold people to a higher standard when there are kids on the floor at a GA show. damn good point Also, a bit off point, but consider that in a theater that holds thousands, how many people in attendance ultimately have the respect and love for the band as we VCers do...in any large group of people, there simply will be plenty of assholes and idiots...in this case it had nothing to do with being in Memphis, or any particular city... The Memphis crowd was leaps and bounds better than the truly rude one in Oxford back in April...

memphisrebel
I was at the show, and to my knowledge -- the phone was never returned. Jeff eventually asked for the lady, but was told by those in the pit that she was gone.He then placed the phone in his shirt pocket and resumed playing. My wife and I were in the mezzanine, and at some point there were boos as Jeff continued to rant. It was uncomfortable, and somewhat diminished the good feelings that were being provided by the band. He is fighting a losing battle, and should have moved on after his initial pleading with the crowd. However, the show was fantastic and the band was beyond tight. The Big Star song with Jody meant a lot to those from Memphis and was a real surprise. I hope Jeff doesn't drop Memphis from future tours.
In a little rowboat
no, i saw it, he gave it back after the first encore to the girl's male friend...girl left without it... also, haven't seen this posted yet...so...
guitwiz
He gave it back to her. She made her way back up front (which is ridiculous, i have no idea how that little girl beat past the crowd to get to the front) and he gave her the phone in the middle of a song. janglyrecords
If you pay for a ticket to a show, you have the right, within reason, to act as you please. Well.....you see, me and a few thousand others also paid for our tickets and that should protect us from a person who talks the whole show, distracts the band, shows their arse and the like. I must be a fool to think the folks who pay $34 actually like music and came to see Wilco. Based on the folks surrounding me that is not a good assumption. I'm fine with recreation substance use, but one should realize that others are trying to have fun and listen. We traveled from SC to TN to see the guys. We travel a good bit to see them (5 in the last year). it is our source of middle age fun. It stinks when others muck up the spirit of the show, but I thought Jeff handled it pretty well. He gave the phone back and the set list rocked. Overall, I am just so pleased that the shows just get better and better. Can't wait for another Southern US date! bobbob1313
I'm going to say it's on the members of the crowd to police themselves, not the band leader. But that's just me. Or, rather. I'd say let the show go on, rather than having to deal with what inevitably has to become an awkward situation when the band leader yells at the crowd.
Sir Stewart
Thanks Jeff! I will never forget and will play my drums with more excitement than ever!

I've been to a few odd-crowd Wilco shows in different cities. He seems to mention at least something about each odd scenario and then move on. It's usually comical and light hearted, but it can come off as rude. I think it's cool when he rants from time to time b/c sometimes it needs to be done (Oxford for example). Yeah, he took it a bit far even though the girl was being dumb. I mean the guy is grumpy and tired from touring. I still love him and the show rocked.
bikedewd
To me, the Memphis crowd was just another sad example of the concert experience that is more often the rule, rather than the exception, these days: rude, inconsiderate and more often not, there to talk to their friends -- and shouting to try to be heard over the band -- rather than enjoy and appreciate the show. The standard line is: "I paid for my ticket and can do whatever I want". It just boggles the mind to try and understand why they would even want to buy a ticket just to talk about their day or what they are going to do after the show..... It's getting harder and harder for bands to find appreciative audiences............perhaps there should be a test given before admittance: Name 3 Wilco albums......... Guest Speed Racer
perhaps there should be a test given before admittance: Name 3 Wilco albums......... To be fair, I've been to a number of great concerts for bands I barely know, and I've been a respectful audience member at every show I attend. In some cases, the concert is what got me into the band in the first place. Assholes will be assholes, whether they like a band or not; they'll either be assholes to the band or to the audience, but they will be assholes.
bikedewd
Agreed! And, obviously you are not one of them. My point is: the assholes are too often outnumbering the true fans. We are losing respect for the concert experience and for the people around us...and too often, are afraid of confronting those who would ruin the experience for all of us.... I'm definitely not advocating complete silence during a show...far from it....but there have been too many instances over the past few years where it was obvious that individuals around me were more interested in themselves or their significant other than they were in the show. Fine -- that's their choice -- then take it to the beer stand for awhile. There have been times between songs when I've politely asked for them to hold it down a little -- sometimes it works and sometimes I've been harassed. But I've never regretted it and more often than not, someone else in the vicinity has agreed with my sentiment. We need to take back the experience from the assholes..... browngw
My question might have got lost in my rant yesterday, but does anyone know if there was a show poster for Memphis? They don't have one up for Memphis or Austin, was just curious. Thanks.
Hoodoo Man
Late to the conversation so I'll try not to rehash too much. The show was outstanding. Liam Finn put on an entertaining set. I was not and really still am not familiar with his music but really enjoyed watching he and Eliza Jane working all of their effects and programs to actually build a song in front of an audience. The songs with Glenn were excellent as well and really got a lot of enthusiastic cheers on "Cinnamon Girl". Wilo was awesome. I think it might be impossible for them to put on a bad show. I enjoyed hearing a lot of tunes off of (The Album). There's always a list of tunes I would have liked to hear, but understand that some have to go away to make room for the new ones. Every time Wilco plays the Memphis area, Jody Stephens makes an appearance. First time I saw them, he played percussion and sang on "Cali Stars". The next time he played drums on "Box Full Of Letters". I was blown away when he did both of these and then the brought out "In The Street". Maybe not as awesome as seeing a Beatle playing a Beatles song, but someting akin to that. Glenn played cowbell and rocked it on the cowbell "roll" or whatever that would be called. Nels, of course, was impressive. I thought his "IG" solo was one of the best I've heard. Glenn = greatness, no surprise. Mike was Mike. He never falters. Special props to John and Pat. Pat always impresses me with the understated touches he adds to songs. It's hard for some to get past his rock star poses, but he really is an important part of the live Wilco experience. John nailed the Chris Bell vocals on "In The Street". He and Pat took over the stage for that song and got the harmonies just right. Let's see, I think I left somebody out...oh yeah, that Tweedy guy. His voice was in fine form in spite of his having a cold. His guitar playing is getting better and better. In fact, my near-sighted son commented after "ALTWYS" that Nels was a beast. I had to explain to him that that was Jeff. Random comments: Yes, Jeff revisted flaskgirlgate too many times (accidentally giving her the extra attention she probably wanted), but it bothered him. I was glad he called her out, but was ready to forget about her and move on. As for the flask comment, I think in his anger over her total disregard for the band's video policy as well as his personal plea, he was pointing out that in the middle of being called out she was flaunting her disregard for the theater's policies. I don't believe it was some kind of anti-drinking comment. As for the rest of the crowd, Memphis does not get a whole lot of rock shows. Maybe there's some kind of pent up frustration and causes people to really show their asses. I don't know. This crowd was way, way better than the crowd in Oxford. I'll never go back to Oxford for a show, but the Orpheum is a great place for a concert. Sotzo - I saw you and your daughter standing by the stage door before the show and I said to myself, "They are backstage for sure!" I should have brought my little girl in a custom made t-shirt or maybe my 14-month old in a Wilco onesie! That was just too cute. I'm glad she got a shout out from Jeff. That's a memory she'll keep forever. Finally, on a similar note, took my 2 oldes sons to the concert for their first ever. Final result: they loved it and think Wilco is the greatest band ever and Jeff Tweedy the funniest guy ever. Thanks Wilco for a great night!

bleedorange
No news on poster? Was there a poster for the Memphis show? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks. There have been posters put up in the Wilco store for each show they have played...except for the Memphis one. My guess is that there wasn't one, but I would check the store periodically just to be sure.

I don't know if it was only for Memphis or not...anyone else know? ETA...nevermind, answered my own question. Looks like it is just a general NA tour poster.
browngw
Noticed there isn't a poster up for the Austin show either. I wonder why they skipped those two shows. I have bought a Wilco poster for every show I have been to. I guess now I relax my obsessive-compulsive disorder and not worry about picking up a poster for every show I attend. Might pick up the tour poster to make myself feel a little better.

browngw
Just got an e-mail from Wilco saying they did not print a poster for the Memphis show. I wonder how they decide which shows and why they wouldn't print one for Memphis when it looks like they have had posters for every other show on this leg of the tour. Disappointed to say the least, there goes my streak.
