Man, the U.S. smoked pole at curling this time around.

Well she's crashed twice now. Admittedly I don't know anything about skiing, but all I heard before the Olympics was how great she was. Maybe I thought she was supposed to win more than one race because of all the hype. It was just a question. My bad.

I think she was more in the "never won at the Olympics" category of hype, a Michelle Kwan kind of thing. She's won a ton of other competitions, but she got injured at Torino, so this was supposed to be her big Olympics. And she has won a gold and a bronze, so I don't think she's doing too bad.

Also, re: crashing. Watching the half-pipe competitions, I was struck by how some of the riders who looked like they were doing great were knocked out of contention by falls near the end of their run. In a lot of cases, I was most impressed by the ones who failed the most spectacularly. It's definitely a calculation of risk vs. reward. Shaun White waited until he got a safe-enough score to win the event before going out and doing his major trick in his second run, when he could afford to risk the fall.

I may be totally wrong, but I'm assuming something similar is true for skiing.

Doesn't she already have 4 medals? Most competitors - hell, most front-runners - don't even get a single medal, and if they get one, they rarely get two.

That, and I think every Olympics needs its hero, and since she doesn't look like she has a perma-bake, I think that puts her an inch ahead of White.

Also, she's the same height and weight as me, which makes me feel a lot more athletic than I previously felt!

ETA: So she's only got two medals, but she's still no slouch.

Good! I was rooting for USA today too. Let's keep this a North American only final! I only said that because Winston was walking around, being all cocky.

Oh please. Two words - Ryan Miller.

It will take more than one goaltender to get all the way through the big three. All four (CA, USA, SWE, RUS) have elite goaltenders.

Saw the women's aerials at Cypress last night. The fog made it seem even more otherworldly. Congratulations to Lydia Lassila!

As we walked up to the venue from the buses, some people were listening to the Canada-Russia game and providing updates. When I heard the score was 3-0 in the first period (lots of cheering and big grins all around), I thought it seemed too good to be true. Let's hope Canada can keep that momentum and go all the way!

Wow, an Ovie hater? Who are you, Sidney Crosby?

Nope, just a Rangers fan!

You can blame the pre-games hype on NBC.

As for her crashing twice, the crash in the slalom during the combined could have happened to anyone, hooking a tip in slalom is very common.

The crash in the GS was a bit more suprising, but the course was not set-up to her strengths. Vonn's best events are the DH and Super-G (the speedy alpine disciplines). The GS course, from what I have read, was on the tighter, turnier end of the spectrum.

A gold in the DH (the premier Alpine event in my opinion) and a bronze in the Super-G is still a pretty good showing.

Winning one medal is a pretty great showing for any athlete. The "gold-or-bust" mentality that a lot of fans and viewers have really bothers me. Look at how Erin Pac celebrated her bronze in the bobsled. Hell, look at how excited the two U.S. women skaters were to be sitting in fifth and sixth after skating personal best programs on the grandest stage.

You think Joannie Rochette is upset about being in third right now?

Unless you win four gold medals, some people view it as a disappointment, and that's a shame.
