Bought some Makers Mark the other day. Boy is that good stuff. Usually go with Jack or Bushmills. Sometimes have to slum it though for some Jim Beam. My brother in law absolutely loves Jim Beam.

Was going to go down to the Strahan's distillery the other day for a tour, but no one would go with me. Oh, well.

Thanks for the heads up.

IDK about WAY better though...

It has to be fabulous to be WAY better...

I don't say that lightheartedly. I'd put my money on it. Try it, and let me know. I'd be surprised if you didn't like it better. Of course it is a matter of taste, but to me, it is not even close. IMO it is the BEST Irish whiskey that I have had. We used to order it from overseas and get gouged on shipping. Now we can get gouged at Binny's!

I'm thinking that it'll be time for some Jameson's when I get home tonight!

I'm not a big drinker of the hard stuff, but the last 2 bottles I brought home from the ABC store were Woodford Reserve, based on Moss' suggestion above. Thanks! :thumbup

This is the best bourbon out there in the $30.00 range by far IMKBO(in my Kentucky boy opinion). I would say it give a lot of the sixty and eighty dollar shit a run for it's money as well. I have a bottle that we/I got for a wedding gift that will be turning 22 years old this May. If I ever decide to crack it I'll let you guys know.

Whiskey is my spirit of choice. If im looking for something strong or if i expect to be sharing with more than a few people, I go for George Dickel. Mainly because its cheap, but i also got used to Dickel as its the choice whiskey down in Manchester, TN where ive spent quite some time. However, i found my new favorite whiskey about a month ago, Michter's US 1. Great for Manhattans, an Old Fashioned, or even neat it is absolutely delicious.

Picked up some Woodford Reserve last night. Dam tasty stuff that is. It is hard to choose one at the liquor store that I like the best. Just got to try them all I guess. As an old New Zealand brewer told me the prize goes to the person who tries the most kinds of alcohol.

I drank whiskey tonight. Jameson's to be exact. A shot was purchased on my behalf because I used profanity. A person who's worked 30 feet from me for 5 years did not think I was capable of uttering profane words. She was proved wrong. I drank whiskey. I am happy now.

I wish I worked closer to her. Let me guess, your cussing again today

I know a dude that is a big fan of the Dickel. He's a friend of a friend. I've been told his name a few times but can never remember it so the hubby and I call him George Dickel.

Now that the weather is cooler, a nice bottle of Glenlivet is in order. Hubby likes Oban.

Sweet Jesus I love Oban. In the winter next to a roaring fire with a good book, it's really all you need.

I just recently started drinking bourbon cocktails. Manhattans, Old Fashioneds, Sazeracs and Whiskey Sours. I'm going to pick up a bottle of rye whiskey this weekend. The only brands that are stocked locally are Wild Turkey 101 Rye, Old Overholt and Jim Beam Rye. Anyone have a preference between those three? I've heard great things about Rittenhouse Rye and Sazerac Rye, but I can't find them here.

If you haven't already tried it, I'd recommend Old Granddad bottled-in-bond (the 100-proof version, not the 86). It's got more rye than most bourbons, so it makes a great cocktail mixer for drinks that traditionally call for rye.

As among the ryes you listed, I've not had any of them except Sazerac, which was quite good as a mixer as well. I don't much like rye as a sippin whiskey, though...

I ordered a manhattan the other day when I went out with a group of coworkers and was given shit or ordering a "girly" drink. Huh.

Well...in the recent popular culture it has been associated with Sex and the City. Cosmopolitans may be a chick drink...but anything good enough for Jack Kerouac is manly enough for you (or anybody other male on this earth drawing a breath).

If a Manhattan is manly enough for Fat Tony, it's manly enough for me.

What's girly are all these vodka-based cocktails that are all named variations of "-tini." Oh, and cosmos.

Thanks for the tip on the Old Granddad. I'll have to try that. Finally found some Sazerac here in town. May have to pick some up soon. Just remembered seeing (ri)1 in Indy a couple of months ago. A little pricey at about $50 though.

And how many of them were drinking coronas? A watered down, pale imitation of a beer.

Although I'm going to stop ordering anything more exotic than a gin and tonic when I'm out. Had a horribly watered down Manhattan, on the rocks, with no bitters at a catered event on Thursday.

Cocktails, done well, are as American as baseball, apple pie and jazz, especially bourbon cocktails.

A whiskey cocktail I want to try the next time I'm in a decent bar is the Rusty Nail: 3 parts scotch, 1 part Drambuie
