sgtpepper64
I love the Talking Heads. I think DB is a great songwriter. What is everyone's opinion on him? Has anyone seen True Stories?

Sweet Papa Crimbo
I would have said egomaniacal genius.
Scalzunfield
I love the Talking Heads. I think DB is a great songwriter. What is everyone's opinion on him? Has anyone seen True Stories? Love the Talking Heads but think True Stories (the movie)is absolute garbage. Not sure how I feel about David Byrne. Everything I've heard said about the man's personality isn't so flattering but damn if his songwriting output from '77 -> Little Creatures isn't some of the greatest stuff ever written. I feel that way about True Stories too. I feel like it's just weird for the sake of being weird, Napoleon Dynamite 20 years before Napoleon Dynamite, but just as shitty. hardwood floor
always thought talking heads were a good band with an uneven catalogue ... a tad overrated maybe never liked byrne
PopTodd
I love the Talking Heads. As far as he is as a human being, that does not really concern me. Although, I thank him many times over for discovering Tom Zé and bringing him to the American audience.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J6ByabeEGxcOne of my all-time favorites. Sir Stewart
I think David Byrne is a great artist, one of those rare types that can be at once accessible and mysterious.
Oil Can Boyd
Love Talking Heads. True Stories (the album) is the only thing of theirs that I don't really like. (I saw the movie when it first came out and have no desire to see it again.) There was a thread on here a while ago about the best runs of great albums by a band and, for me, 77/More Songs/Fear of Music/Remain in Light is pretty tough to top. Byrne's post Talking Heads stuff has never grabbed me but I do really like the Catherine Wheel soundtrack that he did.
LouieB
True Stories isn't a great movie, but it isn't garbage. In fact I think it is pretty fun to watch. I saw it when it came out in the theaters and I took my kids to see it at the Music Box a couple years ago. I own both the songs and the incedental music on LP. Talking Heads have been overexposed, but they are still a great band with a great catalogue. LouieB
u2roolz
I really loved True Stories the film. It's odd. Before I saw the film, I was writing something similar (screenplay) about our current culture. After watching the film I scrapped the idea and realized I was beaten to it from a pure genius. LouieB
It has some really great moments and some great quirky performances. You gotta love John Goodman in his first big role, Pops Staples is great as well, along with Spaulding Grey who had very few parts in movies other than his own monologues. Also Wild Wild Life is a fun sequence. LouieB
The Inside of Outside
There was a thread on here a while ago about the best runs of great albums by a band and, for me, 77/More Songs/Fear of Music/Remain in Light is pretty tough to top. Agree wholeheartedly with this. Which makes him a genius of some sort. Could be an out of his mind egotistical nut, too, I suppose. They felt new, different, at least until the Little Creatures/True Stories period. Early stuff still sounds different from a lot of what is out there. My kids think "Psychokiller" is an odd song (they play it on Rock Band). That's gotta count for something.
deepseacatfish
Talking Heads, definitely brilliant and both the albums he did with Brian Eno I like a lot. Haven't really listened much to his solo stuff but some of the other more esoteric art/music projects he's been involved in have seemed pretty cool too (ie. one where he rigged up a building to be an instrument). He might be a bit egomaniacal but the guys got genuine talent in my opinion and has been a part of some seriously groundbreaking stuff.

mpolak21
Love the first five Talking Heads albums and Stop Making Sense, the records they made with Eno are among the finest ever made in my opinion and Byrne/Eno have had some strong solo records as well. He isn't beloved by his former bandmates but I think given the quality of the last Talking Heads album, he did the right thing retiring the name.
dagwave
Someone turned me on to his online journal a couple of months ago: http://journal.davidbyrne.com/ pretty interesting stuff!
