skywalker2754
Hi,I just had a question for everyone. I was considering booking Jeff Tweedy for a solo show with Roger McGuinn opening in Charleston, WV. Both parties have expressed interest in doing the show together. Though myself being the promoter of the show was curious of how much interest there is in Wilco/Tweedy and McGuinn/Byrds within the WV area? West Virginia is often overlooked when Wilco goes on tours that is why I am worried if there would be enough interest to fill up an auditorium for the Tweedy/McGuinn show. So if you could please let me know who here would be interested in such an event in the WV area, it would be extremely helpful. Thanks!
Shakespeare In The Alley
Very interested. I'm in Manassas, VA, and Charleston might be a bit out of my travel range, though.
skywalker2754
I think it would be a great show!...Tweedy and McGuinn haven't shared the stage in quite some time...
kidsmoke
I'm nowhere near the area, but WOW, that would be a terrific show! Good luck with it!
Magnetized
I would be there in a heartbeat. I'm in Norfolk VA. Edit: Though I have to say, Charleston is off the beaten path and, so far as I know, not home to a flourishing music scene. They're not going to draw the same crowds as they would with their bands, obviously, and do the local college kids care enough? Whereas, for instance, in Charlottesville, VA, it would be a sellout, I'm sure. Even though it's also off the beaten track, there's more of a known music scene and it's within easy driving distance of Richmond and DC. Plus, Tweedy had a successful solo show in C'ville and would, I think be eager to return there. Just my 2 cents.
suites
Good Luck in pulling this off.....How much do you have to pay to get Jeff? Ballpark $20k for each is my guess. So you are at $40k just for talent. Is this for real?
LouieB
I might make a trip for that.... or not.... I would guess Jeff costs more than McGuinn at this point. LouieB
choo-choo-charlie
I'd be interested, although it's about 5-6 hours for me from Columbia, MD.
Wailin
Oh hell yes. My hometown, and lots of fellow fans here. And beg to differ on Wilco Me's observation about a lack of a flourishing music scene here. Tune in to Mountain Stage, taped just down the street, for a flavor of the acts that pass through CRW. http://www.mountainstage.org
Analogman
Piss on Virginia. Uncle Tupelo and Wilco have both played Mountain Stage (as you probably know).
mpolak21
I grew up and live off and on in Charleston. McGuinn played at the Clay Center (unequivocally the best venue in the area) in 2003 to a little over a half-full capacity, the room seats 1,883. It would be an exciting event, but I wouldn't expect a massive crowd for it. Morgantown would be a decent second option, set something up through the University when school is in. Wilco played there in 2006ish, I believe.
Analogman
That was the last time I saw the band. Jeff told me they would be back some day.
Magnetized
Piss on Virginia. Uncle Tupelo and Wilco have both played Mountain Stage (as you probably know). Shame on me for forgetting Mountain Stage. Seriously. Sorry, West Virginia!
skywalker2754
I too was at the Roger McGuinn show several years ago at the Clay Center in Charleston and the Morgantown Wilco show at the Mountainlair. Both shows didn't have the large crowds which I would have hoped for, which kind of makes me nervous to go forward with the show. Considering the costs when you add up expenses to book both Tweedy & McGuinn, rental of the venue, insurance, advertising, etc.; might be a hard one to even breakeven on. Analogman
We are getting Widespread Panic in September, and The Drive-By Truckers in October in Morgantown.

Wendy
doubt it's even close to that for solo sets.why do you doubt that?
suites
doubt it's even close to that for solo sets. Really, you think you can get JT for less then $20k? I bet he is around $20k and Wilco the band is double.
Shakespeare In The Alley
Yeah, I would imagine one off solo sets still command a pretty high amount. I glanced at Tweedy's page on High Road Touring's website, and it says that's what he's available for through December. Personally, I'll keep my fingers crossed for a DC Tweedy solo show. Charleston is most likely too far for me to go for a concert.
Shakespeare In The Alley
Interesting. But I feel like I shouldn't know that.
Guest Speed Racer
Why not? No one was under the impression he did it for free, and he didn't get that pre-War Martin from his lemonade stand earnings.
Shakespeare In The Alley
Oh, no no, I'm aware he makes a good amount, with or without Wilco. There's just something that makes me think I shouldn't know just what that amount is. However, it is interesting to think about concert prices from the other side. Guest Speed Racer
Well, I just multiplied my 2005 solo show ticket price by the venue's capacity, and assuming it took just as much as Tweedy's take to power/run the venue/crew and all that, Ticketmaster got about 300% more than him, which seems about right. Magnetized
I don't like having these numbers tossed around, and I have to say it seems like a kind of dodgy thing for a promoter to be talking about on a fan site.
Guest Speed Racer
I don't know; labels announce band's deals all the time, and they usually include figures. I know Joe Mauer's base salary for the next - what, decade? The top CEOs of the Twin Cities had their salaries printed in a feature in the local paper. Why is it not okay to know what Jeff charges for one solo show?
