bleedorange
It isn't that bad. It's just going to be a down year this year. Really, the biggest thing hurting us are mental mistakes and stupid penalties. We helped them extend some key drives because of them.
cryptique
Michigan's 5-0 start has been fun ... but they better beat Purdue on 11/13 to become bowl-eligible, because I'm not sure they'll win any of the other games left on their schedule. 10/9 - Michigan State10/16 - Iowa10/30 - at Penn State11/6 - Illinois11/13 - at Purdue11/20 - Wisconsin11/27 - at Ohio State Their best shot at seven wins is to also take out Illinois. Penn State is a bit weaker than anticipated this year, so maybe that's how they get to win #8, but it's in Happy Valley, so maybe not. With their terrible defense, they will not beat MSU, Iowa, Wisconsin, or tOSU. (35 points to Indiana? 37 to UMass?) I'm seeing a 5-0 start leading to a 6-6 finish (7-5 at best), and a minor December bowl (assuming the NCAA lets them go to one ... I haven't been paying attention to the violations brouhaha). jimtweedy1977
wow...I felt bad about how the Aggies gave one way Thursday night. But watching Texas crap the bed last week against UCLA and watching them get owned in the first half today is REALLY painful. I don't know, I was tempted several times yesterday to turn the channel on the LSU-UT game. Les Miles is fortunate that LSU is still unbeaten, because if LSU were pulling the shenangians they have been pulling this season and losing, he would have been gone by now, especially for continuing to put Jordan Jefferson in as quarterback. What's the definition of insanity? Continuing to do the same thing each time with expectations of different results. Honestly, since Patrick Peterson is being considered for offense, put him in as quarterback. He can't be any worse than Jefferson or Lee.

If State's defense cannont slow down the Michigan offense, I doubt any Big Ten defense (with the exceptions of Iowa and tOSU) stops them. And if Michigan's defense somehow is able to stop State's rushing game, they might have a chance at winning some games down the road as well . . . after all, IU has the best passing offense of all of the Big Ten teams. Michigan's defense should do better against more traditional power running teams. If Robinson stays healthy, and the defense can hold the opposing teams to 21 to 27 points, Michigan should win at least 8, maybe 9 games this year. GO BLUE!!!! BEAT SPARTY!!!! calvino
That was a hell of Illinois/Michigan game (albeit the defensive play of both teams was pretty much non-existent). I was hoping IL would pull it off. The Big Ten has had some great games this year.

cryptique
link Terrelle Pryor Suspended: 4 Other Ohio State Buckeyes To Sit Out 5 Games Next Season RUSTY MILLER | 12/23/10 12:35 PM | AP COLUMBUS, Ohio — Ohio State quarterback Terrelle Pryor and four other Buckeyes were suspended by the NCAA for the first five games of next season for selling championship rings, jerseys and awards, and receiving improper benefits from a tattoo parlor. All can still play in the Sugar Bowl against Arkansas. Along with Pryor, running back Daniel Herron, wide receiver DeVier Posey, offensive lineman Mike Adams and defensive end Solomon Thomas must sit out and repay between $1,000 to $2,500 to charity. Ohio State athletic director Gene Smith said the school will appeal the suspensions. "While we believe sanctions should be rendered, we do believe they are severe," he said Thursday at a news conference. "We do believe we can give mitigating circumstances for the NCAA to consider." The NCAA did not suspended the players for Jan. 4 Sugar Bowl against the eighth-ranked Razorbacks because the "student-athletes did not receive adequate rules education during the time period the violations occurred." "These are significant penalties based on findings and information provided by the university," Kevin Lennon, NCAA vice president of academic and membership affairs, said in the release. Lennon said a game was added on to the usual four-game penalty "because these student-athletes did not immediately disclose the violations when presented with the appropriate rules education." Pryor is the team's star, while Herron is the leading rusher and Posey is the second-leading receiver. Adams is a starter at left tackle and Thomas a top sub on the defensive line. A sixth player, linebacker Jordan Whiting must sit out the first game of the 2011 season and pay $150 to a charity for the value of services that were discounted by the tattoo artist because he was a Buckeyes player. "We as coaches feel the buck stops here," coach Jim Tressel said. "We're the ones who need to make things even more crystal clear." Smith said Ohio State was not "explicit" in instructing players about the sale of apparel, awards and gifts. Pryor must repay $2,500 for selling his Big Ten ring, Fiesta Bowl sportsmanship award and his 2008 gold pants, a trinket given to players who are a part of a team which beats rival Michigan. Adams must repay $1,000 for selling his 2008 Big Ten championship ring. Herron must repay $1,150 for selling his football jersey, pants and shoes for $1,000 and receiving discount services worth $150. Posey sold his 2008 Big Ten ring for $1,200 and also received discount services.

calvino
Telander wrote a great book on the same general subject over twenty years ago: The Hundred Yard Lie. I haven't read it - heard great things about it and I think his columns are great - he has been a pretty consistent critic of the big business of NCAA football. He wrote a series of columns regarding brain injuries to football players this past year, that were also great. Regarding the linked story, I guess I never realized that coach's receive all the bonus's for beating certain teams - $50,000 for beating Navy is kinda of out there and if the coach takes his team out for a steak dinner after he wins and he gets his bonus, the players would get suspended.
