Mr. Heartbreak
Great Dylan show tonight at the USF Sun Dome, my first time there in my 15 years in Tampa. The place is kind of a dump, an old basketball gym, basically, and it only seats 11K or so, but I'd say Bob brought in about 7-10K (that's a rough guesstimate, and I don't pretend it's even close to accurate). Bob opened with Leopard-Skin Pill-Box Hat, which was great. He played Tangled Up In Blue, which is one of my favorites, and shortly thereafter he really surprised me by adding the next track from Blood on the Tracks, Simple Twist of Fate. Instead of hunkering down behind the keyboards all night like he has when I have seen him before, he switched among three (!) positions: keys, electric guitar, and front and center with just a mic stand and harmonica. There were a lot of other highlights for me, mostly songs that I've known well for many years: Lay Lady Lay, Stuck Inside of Mobile With The Memphis Blues Again, A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall, Highway 61 Revisited, Just Like A Woman, and, most surprisingly, Ballad Of A Thin Man. I say surprisingly because that's never been a favorite of mine, but it was stunning tonight. I have never seen Dylan so animated before - standing before the microphone, harmonica in hand, gesturing like some demented Tony Bennett figure in a David Lynch film. It was very, very dark, and weirdly humorous, which suits the song, but I was surprised by how much fun it really was the whole way through. The encores were amazing too. I expected to get Jolene and Like A Rolling Stone and nothing else, as that has been his M.O. for quite a number of shows as of late, from what I've read. Instead, after playing those two songs, they ended with a third song which, of course, had to be All Along the Watchtower (what else could he play after Like A Rolling Stone?). Anyway, great show in a not so great venue, and well worth the mere fifty bucks for a seat on the floor about 20 rows back. calvino
I read that there was some type of silent film showing before the show, instead of music. Were you able to catch any of the movie?
IATTBYB
Sweet Fancy Moses, after reading Mr. Heartbreak's review, I just might end up forking over the bucks to see Bob when he hits Kalamazoo on the 29th.
The High Heat
I've got tickets for my first Dylan show on the 16th in Winston-Salem. Can't wait! Haven't been able to find info on an opening act. I suppose there is no opening act?
calvino
I don't think there is any opening act on this tour. I was going to take a road trip up to Kalamazoo but it doesn't look I am going to be able to swing it. IATTBYB, have you been in the Miller Auditorium; is it a nice venue? He is playing the Riviera Theatre here in Chicago on the 30th, but I have Halloween party that night.
Mr. Heartbreak
I read that there was some type of silent film showing before the show, instead of music. Were you able to catch any of the movie? Yes, it was D.W. Griffith's Intolerance. http://www.filmsite.org/into.html Very apropos, given today's political climate. There was no opening act. IATTBYB, have you been in the Miller Auditorium; is it a nice venue? Miller is very nice . . . similar to the Wharton Center in E. Lansing. It is the home of the K'zoo Symphony Orchestra and all the travelling Broadway shows. Bob will probably sound better at Miller than he did the last time he played in Kalamazoo at Wings Stadium (the hockey rink).

I checked this morning and some seats on the main floor recently opened up for the Miller show. I was holding off because only balcony seats were available, before. froggie
the good thing about the current shows is that he plays less of that toy keyboard, and charlie sexton is back in the band
Bart
How is the stage being set up nowadays? In other words, which way is Bob facing, or where should I sit to be able to see the front of Bob and not his side or back? Last time I saw him a year ago we were on the left side of the hall when facing the stage and the view was great.
Mr. Heartbreak
Bob is at stage left, so if you're in the audience, he's on the right. He also gets up fairly often and takes center stage with either a guitar or harmonica.
BobDylan'sBeard
I was at the Dylan show the night before in Davie, the venue (Arena at Nova State) was awful, the acoustics were terrible and the sound was muffled. I'd like to say that Bob and his Band put on a great show but I couldn't tell.
rockinrob
I was also at the tampa show. I have a class on thursday nights (that attendance counts in ). The business building is on the other side of the parking lot to the sundome, so the plan was the wife was going to park in the sun dome parking lot, I would drop off my computer in the car, and we would go in to the show. I was going to leave my class at 7:30. But then it came to pass that I had to give a freakin group presentation. Our group went 2nd. We started at 7:15. at 7:35 we were done presenting. and then the questions start. This project is a completely falsified, doesnt matter what the idea is (the class is international marketing) kind of deal. Our group was presenting on our product, which is instant beer (crystal light, but with beer powder inside). The whole thing is ridiculous. When we finished with our presentation part, someone raised their hand. "How much can you make in a production run?" WTF? I made this crap up from thin air. Most importantly you, who just finished presenting, also made yours up from thin air. give me a break! 15 minutes later, the stupid, pointless questions, which we had to answer with made up out of thin air answers, because the whole entire project was made up out of thin air because this is a MARKETING CLASS, I was able to leave. Met the wife. She parked on the other side of the business building, so we had to backtrack by a 5 minute walk, drop off the computer, and then run back to the sundome. We came in as the last bit of "leopard skin pill box hat" rang out. i was sad I missed it, but now I have the boot so it should be okay. Dylan was way better than when I saw him about 4 or 5 years ago. He still sounds like a Frogman doing a tom waits impression without growling, but the band is a nice blues band. As mentioned above, some of the songs are really awesome this way. Ballad of a thin man may trump the original... it felt like satan was hosting a show ala tony bennet, live from the depths of hell! The videos playing behind the screen were really cool. Makes me miss the videos wilco used in 2004/2005. Those were amazing. great show, see him if you can. just be on time! The High Heat
Dylan was energetic last night and performed well. His band is awesome! Not as many people at the show as I expected, had a lot of empty seats in the back (I realize it's a college basketball arena, but I also realize it's Bob Dylan.). Perhaps being fall break & Wake Forrest playing football not too far away in Va. had something to do with that. I'd estimate 5-6K showed up. Three dollars and 63 cents
There's no opener this time around, right? I'm going to see him in Binghamton Wednesday night and want to make sure I don't get there late.
