I just remembered this one:

Love it.

And, there's another Nina Gordon-related one that you reminded me of. Let me go grab it.

Somebody post something, so that I'll be able to put the video in another post, please.

i dig that Husker cover but wouldn't rank it too highly in the 'incongruous' dept...HD was a pop band underneath the fury of their punk overcoat (they even tipped their hands early via the cover of "sunshine superman"), and they were also MN-based.

Likewise Rodrigo y Gabriella's Metallica cover isn't "incongruous" when you consider that they two of them started playing music together in a death metal band.

By the same token, I mean.

But let's not get into a pissing match. There's some cool stuff in this thread.

Wish I had a recording of this but I used to be in a quasi bluegrass trio called "Joe Bobs Revenge" and we did a bluegrass version of Skid Rows 18 and Life

I can't decide whether this was genius or what...

Aimee Mann - "One"

(No, that's not Aimee in the video, it's a fan video. But that is Aimee singing -- from the For the Love of Harry Nilsson tribute album.)

Why is this incongruous? I think Aimee nails it and she's not an odd choice to cover it.

Covering the (original) Nilsson version makes sense, yes. But for those who only know the song via Three Dog Night, I think that it makes a lot less sense.

I think that she completely nails it. It was just not something that I would have heard her playing, I guess.

Fair enough...however, the Three Dog Night cover isn't that bad. The vocals are a little strong, verging on overwrought, but on the whole, I think TDN does justice to the song.

I don't know if this is incongrous. Surreal maybe, but cool as hell.

Incongruous doesn't necessarily mean bad...

Absolutely nothing against the TDN version at all. Just saying that their version is a lot better-known than the Nilsson original. And a lot less connected to the things that Aimee Mann usually does, musically. And, if one (pardon the unintentional pun) does not know the Nilsson version, which most folks don't, it seems quite incongruous.
