lamradio
sound like they're being recorded through a wall of tampons. That's about the best description I've heard of the drum sound on SBS.. In fact the overall production is very dry on the album, tampons all over the studio..
augurus
Actually, listening to "Less Than You Think" in its entirety enhances "The Late Greats." I'm not saying it's worth listening to all the time, but I rarely skip it.The Late Greats has always felt out of place and kind of gimmicky.I prefer to be delusional and believe that Less Than You Think is the ending track of AGIB. u2roolz
Shake It Off always sounded like a commercial jingle for shedding pounds or for shredded cheese.
i'm only sleeping
I always liked the tune, but the chorus gets old after while. The "Shake It Off" seems like it repeats two times too many... ).. that's also true for 'You never know'

augurus
What's the gimmick, then?Wilco decides to say that the obscure bands never get played on the radio (commenting on themselves at that point). It's not clever. And Wilco knew and still know their audience. And then they decide to try and sweep the serious tone under a joke but don't commit fully to any good position (sarcastic, joking, serious, apathetic). Maybe if they applied a focus into one of those or perhaps another direction, it would work. It barely even fits into the themes on A Ghost Is Born. But now that they've taken a lesson or two from Yo La Tengo, successfully pulled off Wilco (The Song), and crafted I Might, they may have a handle on humor in songs once more. Guest Speed Racer
What's the joke they're obscuring the gimmick with? I never heard it as a humorous song, anymore than Heavy Metal Drummer or I'm a Wheel. Rock lyrics don't have to make sense, they don't have to be deep. I think "the best life never leaves your lungs" fits in very well with the themes of AGIB. "Don't commit fully to any good position"? Just in that song, or, like always: "I felt like a clown/" "I looked like someone I used to know" "I felt alright" ["I wasn't myself"]Oh, the humanity, how did he feel!?!? "I move so slow""[remember me floating fast"] "Barking dogs and fenced in yards""When dogs laugh some say they're barking" Good god, I can't keep things straight. To say that Wilco, in 2009, finally "got a handle on humor" is the funniest thing I've heard all day. I'd hate to think Jay stuck a cigarette in Jeff's belly button as a gesture in serious art. Maybe you oughtn't take your music so seriously.

And how would you define an obscure band if not for lack of airtime? I totally missed this the first time. Which of your favorite Jandek tunes have you heard on the local station? bilbrekm
For some reason, the album cover reminds me of this: Exactly what I thought of, too.

Guest Speed Racer
My point is that you're searching for some pretty damned deep meaning in a song that sounds good. To overthink everything like that must be exhausting (and this coming from me). Seriously - what's the joke they're obscuring the gimmick with? And could you define obscurity for the rest of us, who apparently aren't wise to your definition?

thejokeexplained
I read somewhere that the end of the song was supposed to represent what a migraine is like. I suffer from migraines and for a long time before they were diagnosed, I used to just deal with them, try to make it through the day. i read where it was also supposed to make the listener make a effort while playing the track to hit the track up button when they have had enough.
