Most recently: Within the last month my wife & I have found $20, $10, & $5 while walking the dog in our neighborhood.

I found an 1890s John L. Sullivan tobacco card in an old book - I later sold the card on ebay for $500.

I bought an original Dali etching at Goodwill for $5.

Also, what Doug C said.

I did actually try and use them..unfortunatley the venue in Montclair doesn't have much of a backstage area and the band hightailed it out of there... :ohwell

I was in Bangkok recently at a tiny used book store in a large shopping mall, and I found a hardcover copy of Harriet Beecher Stowe's Uncle Tom's Cabin. It had no publishing date, but there was a note in there from 1899, so my guess is that it was printed between 1852 and 1899. I picked it up for the whopping price of three dollars.

  • 2 weeks later...

I FINALLY found a copy of this book:

Or, I should say, that I finally found it for a decent price. Most places it's been going for >$40 or so. I found a copy at Half Price Books for $8. And it's in good shape. AND it appears to have been autographed by the author.

Not bad.

Maybe not the best but one of the coolest was when I was remodleling my 100+ year old house. Found some firecrackers in the rafters wadded up in an issue of the Kentucky Post from around 1908. The firecrackers still worked and there was a reward in the classifieds for a "lost 20 lb bag of sugar which fell out of a buggie somewhere on Dixie Highway".

Best road score:

In a single large stuff sack -

two top of the line sleeping bags.

(His & Hers)

a North Face down fill (large)

a Mountain Hardware down fill (Medium)

A trip to the dry cleaners and they were as good as new.

I found an envelope with over $300 in it. My friends mom saw me and made me knock on the closest door to see if it was theirs. It was a lady's paycheck. She gave me $5 for returning it.

I also found a bag of weed once. In a fried chicken box outside the store.

This was 1978 mind you. Back then I looked down a lot...

When I found this thing, I LITERALLY jumped around the store shouting, "YES! YES!" and holding it over my head.

A couple of years ago I lost it in a flood.

Motherfucker.

Some really great stuff on here, terrible sound quality and all. Early, early versions of these songs. Loved this damn thing. Too bad it's not available on CD. (Although some of it is on the Osmium album. Just not all of it.)

Now I need to find it again... in an electronic format.

I found a gold bracelet once. We were on a road trip and stopped for a picnic at one of those roadside parks along the highway, the ones with outdoor barbecue grills. We were just getting the coals going when I saw something shiny half buried in the dirt. It was a really heavy, solid gold bracelet. I asked around the park to see if the owner was there but no luck, so I just considered it a happy find, and I still wear it.

And I also found a small bag of weed once, on the curb near the gutter when I was taking a walk in my neighborhood. I didn't look around for the owner in that case.
