Wilco — 8/3/12, Rochester, NY (Highland Bowl)

Hot & even more humid...but what a brilliant show!! They did one long encore so they could pack in the maximum 27 song, 2 & 1/4 hour show before the clock stuck curfew & turned our sonic bliss back into pumpkinville- Bless their mindful hearts...some nice & rare surprises & a version of happy birthday for long time crew member "Stan"...Jeff had the whole crowd turn around & spot him in the sound area & sing to him...& he said, half-jokingly, it's why they played "When You Wake Up Feeling Old"- which was incredible!!

I'll let bbop fill you in the rest later on like...

I couldn't make this one, unfortunately, so I won't be much help on the details. But it looks like a pretty stellar gig!

And thanks for following the "correct" titling convention when you started the thread... :thumbup

Stellar show! Not a bad seat in the house, respectful crowd, and a band still on fire. Thought Jeff's voice sounded very strong. Great time for a family visiting from NH. My 6 year old drumming phenom thought Glenn's pose during ITMWLY was about the coolest thing ever.

Amazing show. linclink, were you standing front row right smack-dab in the middle with a notebook and pen for the setlist?

Loved the song selection, and the birthday nod to Stan was just about the nicest thing I've ever seen happen at a concert.

After the crowd cleared out I walked over to the side of the stage with a small group of fans and we all ended up getting invited by John to join the "after party" behind the bowl. Got to meet Pat, John and Mikeal. Glenn was hanging out too, but I didn't get a chance to go over and say hi. I'm still in complete amazment this happened - my luck has been kickin' some major ass lately. It's been an remarkable summer for music and I'm so thankful that I've been able to enjoy it all.

Really nice venue, and a delightful show as always. Finding out that Stan and I share a birthday was a treat, and I wished him a happy birthday on my way out. Favorite moment was hearing the "edgy" (Jeff's adjective) When You Wake Up Feeling Old. The park was really a great place to see Wilco. The areas around the edges were laid back and easy to grab a blanket or lawn chairs and take it all in, and the area in front of the stage was rockin but not at all a mosh pit except right on the rail. Great sight lines. Sound was really good where we were (about 25 feet in front of John). I really liked the Laminated Cat version.

Jeff made reference to the Rochester "garbage plates", and blamed those for any sluggishness by the band. He admired all the concert t-shirts, saying that there were a lot of bands that he liked on those. He singled out someone with a newer Gary Neuman shirt (not "cars" era) as being especially unique and pretty bold. We all had to pretend that they went off and came back on during the encore so that they could squeeze in another song, which ended precisely at 10:00PM by my count. Glen did the full rock star pose for ITMWLY. Jeff waved to us all "individually", except for one guy who wasn't paying attention. Full running / dancing on Hummingbird. Banter was good, though a little sparse. Jeff said that Radio Cure was a particularly courageous song to play in a happy, sunny outdoor venue. "Wilco After Dark" once the sun went down a little. There were a couple other rimshot moments in the banter that I don't quite recall.

The view from where I was, looking forward....

That really sucks. I herniated a disc on tour and am paying for it now but happy I made it to that final show. Hope your neck resolves itself.

Cool you got to go to the shindig!

I was down front in between Nels & Jeff, but a dozen rows back (give or take)...and I got the setlist from here...
