this is better than fiction.

I can never tell if these people are completely uneducated or simply lying to manipulate the uneducated.

The Nazis? "Gott mit uns" - right on their belt buckles. They had the the support of the Catholic Church before, during and after WWII.

When Martin Bashir does it, it's vile and disgusting, and he deserves to be fired.

Holy crap, I completely forgot about this.  Does this woman actually understand the words that come out of her mouth?

Hate to say it, but most people in this country are not very bright. Maybe we're expecting too much of a populace to understand the actual meaning of the text of the First Amendment when it can barely name the three branches of government.

If I had mentioned the common man support of Roberts, I would be inclined to agree with you, but Sarah Palin and Jindal were/are governors.  They should have a bit more knowledge on the workings of government then the average rube out there.  Sarah Palin and Bobby Jindal are two major players on the Right.  Their comments are really more offensive than that of Roberts.

Kevin, the fact that they were/are governors goes right to the point. They don't "... have a bit more knowledge on the workings of government then the average rube out there", but were still elected.

The Vatican apologized for inaction over the holocaust. They didn't support the Nazis

Letter from Pope Pius Xii to Hitler:

To the illustrious, Herr Adolf Hitler, Führer and Chancellor of the German Reich!

Here at the beginning of our pontificate we wish to assure you that we remain devoted to the spiritual welfare of the German people entrusted to your leadership. For them we implore God the Almighty to grant them that true felicity which springs from religion.

We recall with great pleasure the many years we spent in Germany as Apostolic Nuncio, when we did all in our power to establish harmonious relations between Church and State. Now that the responsibilities of our pastoral function have increased our opportunities, how much more ardently do we pray to reach that goal.

May the prosperity of the German people and their progress in every domain come, with God's help, to fruition!

Given this day, 6th March 1939, in Rome at St. Peter's in the first year of our pontificate.

Pope Pius XII

This is just one example. I did a quick search, but there's way too much to sift through. That's not a cop-out, I promise - I just don't have that kind of time right now. If you're interested enough you'll find it. By the way, the Vatican also had cozy relationships with Mussolini's Italy and Franco's Spain. They were the official state religion of both after signing treaties.

The church helped a great many Nazis (including Eichmann, Mengele, Stangl, etc) obtain visas and escape to South America after the war. That has been very well documented.

One fact I always found telling was that exactly one Nazi was ever excommunicated by the Church: Goebbels. For marrying a Protestant.

True. Phil Robertson has a bachelor's in physical education and a master's in education from Louisiana Tech, not the Louisiana College of Glossolalia & Snake Handling. He is educated in the formal sense but it is meaningless in the practical sense.

That letter is a diplomatic plea to Hitler to stop the persecution of Catholics within Germany.

There's many public denunciations by the Vatican over Nazi Germany, and there's many examples of Catholic Priests participating in the German resistance.

I may be wrong, but wasn't there some other group the Nazis were more interested in persecuting? A group that wasn't exactly popular with Catholics either?

Some priests may have resisted, but they didn't do it on orders from the Vatican.

I'm honestly not trying to offend you or anyone else here - I was just responding to the tired old "can't be good without Jesus" nonsense.

I googled it and this came up and I didn't read it but I skimmed it enough to know you guys could probably chew on it: http://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/1999/10/the-holocaust-and-the-catholic-church/305061/

The Duck Dynasty thing is not remotely political, it's simply some dipshit making a comment and dipshits coming down on both sides with forced, faux-stunned reactions.

I know next to nothing about the show - I did not know the premise until reading an AP article today - but even then I wasn't under the illusion that they attended PFLAG meetings.

The Duck flap is political in that it shows that people who purport to understand and love the Constitution and capitalism, don't. Politicians/elected officials are decrying an infringement of constitutional rights where none has occurred. They are upset at capitalism in action. A private enterprise making business decisions as they see fit in order to protect their brand and their profits should be right up Jindal, Palin and their ilk's alley.

I am baffled as to why his "black" comments are getting relatively little traction in comparison.

"Politicians wading in to score votes in the never-ending election" sounds political to me, but that's just my opinion, man.

I mean, I do hear what you're saying, but none of this actually has political fall-out.  If the presence of politicians rendered something political...I'm trying to make a joke about dunk tanks here but I'm coming up short. But you get the idea.

If we used that criteria half the shit that is said here isn't considered political.

But more to the point, the story involves the first amendment, which by its very nature political.

Also no one is requiring you to read or comment on this, and you are welcome to change the subject to something more political.

But so far the conversation has been kinda intriguing and I am interested to see where it goes.

I completely agree with that notion.

And thanks for posting that Atlantic article, Speed Draper. It was a good read.

Right on.

I've read that book referenced in Mr. Draper's article. Pretty shocking stuff.

It was surprisingly hard to find a single link to an unbiased source for information on the subject. Both sides have their agendas and tend to exaggerate in one direction or the other. Such is the internet, I guess. And people.

I agree that no one is going to lose a state or local election over their stance, they are playing the base. You'd hope that even dullards would realize that Jindal's defense of Robertson is an example of the "stupid Republican Party" he railed against not long ago. None of this is going to matter anyway because with the addition of New Mexico, slightly over a third of the states now allow marriage equality. It is simply a matter of time until even Phil Robertson's Louisiana either joins the Freedom Train or gets run over by it. Either way, Phil, Bobby and the gang will have gays and lesbians marrying in their states relatively soon. Just remember that if you speed race through intercourse, you could get too tired and have a sex nap. At least that's what Lauren says.

Relating the Duck Dynasty thing to gay marriage makes no sense at all, not to me anyway. Jindal is joining in because "free speech" is what resonates with the base, not the gay thing. And Phil has no place in this at all anymore.

No one's going to let me in on this in-joke are they?
