This is why the 2 party system sucks. I have done many of those things, but a handful of party leaders set the agenda. We saw a little compromise last month, and maybe more will be on the way. Of course, the biggest key to deficit reduction is a growing economy.

Of course, the biggest key to deficit reduction is a growing economy.

Which is the rub really.  Evidence shows that tax cuts are not growing our economy (http://www.theatlantic.com/business/archive/2012/09/tax-cuts-dont-lead-to-economic-growth-a-new-65-year-study-finds/262438/).  And as stated by the last months employment figures private corporations are not creating nearly enough jobs.  Also we are not making things in this country anymore, thus less jobs.  But really getting people to work is the best way to grow the economy.  The only organization that can do that is the Federal government.  Or infrastructure is crumbling, we have road and bridges that are crumbling, we have a rail system that is decades behind other countries, we have rural areas with out basic utilities that are needed for this age, we have failing schools, etc.

So we have a two problems, not enough jobs, and a crumbling infrastructure.  The solution to one is the solution to another.  In the short term this will lead to a rise in tax rates and more deficit spending, but in the long run our country will be better off more people will be working and the economy will grow.

yes. I am not sure what your point is.

A few posters have called for/expressed support for increased taxes. I just wanted to make sure everyone was aware we just had some big ones last year.

Are there any legitimate potential Democrat presidential nominees for 2016 right now? Is Hillary the only one?

Hillary is the odds on favorite, I would imagine Biden will probably run as well, also I have heard that John Kerry is considering another run.  Other names bandied about Corey Booker, Andrew Cuomo, Amy Klobucher.  One name that I have not heard mentioned is Elizabeth Warren, who I would be very pleased to see as president.

I would imagine you are gonna see probably about 6-10 serious Democratic candidates.

So if we look at the lineup, we got Hillary, Biden, maybe Elizabeth Warren, Andrew Cuomo, and a couple other dark horse candidates. Jerry Brown is still a possible candidate, not that he would ever win.

On the Republican side, it's Christie - assuming his handlers can tell him "You got this, big guy," by then - but who else? Huckabee, Cruz, Santorum, Perry, Jindal, Jeb, Walker, Rand, and maybe Rubio? Trying to picture these debates...

In spite of the Republicans having so many options, it still looks good for Hillary. Get ready to hear the name Benghazi spewed out a few thousand more times.  :yawn

Over the last 5-6 years, my home has lost almost 100k in value yet my property taxes continue to rise every year. Does this make sense? Wait, I'll answer that question......no.

No one in official sectors will tell me why this is so I figure the county assessor is gaming their model used to determine the tax rate.

I have no problem with paying taxes as long as its fair. This situation aint fair. Now its time to lawyer up, ugh.

It's obviously still early, but the few articles I read seem to suggest that Hillary is practically a de facto incumbent. And only if she decides not to run will the race open up. I guess we'll see.

Did Elizabeth Warren pledge to serve her full term? Of course she's almost as old as Hillary.

I also saw Martin O'Malley and Kirsten Gillibrand mentioned in addition to the names you provided. Are these fresh voices in the Democrat Party? Hillary just seems stale to me as a potential candidate.

Kirsten Gillibrand, not really. She started out as a Blue Dog and has become more of a progressive. How much of that is pure calculation, well, the jury is out on that. I love what she has to say, but hell, she's a politician who started as a lawyer (weird, eh?), so who knows if she's really serious or going whichever way the wind blows. Probably considered too liberal to win the nomination, but then, so was Obama.

Martin O'Malley seems kind of generic, but who knows?

It would be weird if Hillary got the nomination, if only because the "it's my turn now" thing is what Republicans do, not Dems (e.g., McCain, Romney). I think the thing that keeps Hillary as the frontrunner is her tenure as Secretary of State, plus her gender. The cynics would say, "Okay, we had a black president, now it's time for a woman." And hey, you get Big Bill back too. :lol

There is a lot of animus against the Clintons here at home, among 50% of the population, but people forget that they are very well respected all over the globe. Whatever you think of their personal BS, having them in there again would probably be a win for the country.

Life is not fair. Taxes are not fair. Assessed valuation is usually less than market value. When property values go down, all that really changes is that you can't sell for more, not that your property is assessed for less. I know you know that. Sometimes you can fight this stuff and sometimes not. Good luck.

Good luck with that, Harvey.

Weinstein found himself on a tangent about why he hates guns, admitting that, "I don't think we need guns in this country and I hate it, and I think that the NRA is a disaster area." Then, after acknowledging that he "shouldn't say this," Weinstein revealed details about his next collaboration with his "August: Osage County" star.

"I'm gonna make a movie with Meryl Streep and we're gonna take this issue head on," he said. "They're gonna wish they weren't alive after I'm done with them."
Likening the project to the 1939 film "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington," Weinstein predicts that gun stocks will "crash and burn" after the film's release.

As I have said before, Americans are just going to have to get used to a shooting a day. (Obviously not just one, but one that makes the news because it is in a theater or school.)

And just how many of those are committed by members of the dreaded NRA?

I'm assuming the ex-cop who shot the guy in a Florida movie theater, for texting, is one of those "non-criminals" or "NRA members" that doesn't commit "gun crimes."

After all, he was only standing his ground, having had popcorn thrown at him.
